I’ve always loved Dhelmise’s design and how all of its details imply certain facial features. Like the compass eye, part of the anchor looking like a nose, the angry eyebrows, moustache and beard made out of seaweed, and how the parts that don’t have seaweed on them look like sharp teeth. It’s such a unique way to give a Pokemon something that resembles a face without actually giving it a real face! I really can’t think of any other inanimate object mon that does that!

Dhelmise is actually really good. A moveset of shadow claw power whip anchor shot and rock slide for coverage or liquidation for the water aesthetic is a great moveset if you want to use it in sword and shield. For Alola I would recommend using the same first 3 moves but just use rock slide as it doesn’t get liquidation in Gen 7 which means it doesn’t have any good physical water moves

Such a unique Pokémon, I do feel that we were cheated a bit with Dhelmise not having a Gigantamax form at least in Sword and Shield, let's be honest, it had HUGE potential for a Gigantamax form! Like a giant haunted pirate ship overflowing with seaweed and possibly having designs on its hull resembling a face like the design of normal Dhelmise!

I have nothing but love for Dhelmise! I went into a tournament at Otakon last year (2021) with an all-ghost team (dressed as a Ghostbuster). Made it to the quarter finals. The triple-STAB was very nice, but the biggest edge I had with Dhelmise was the almost universal reaction from my opponents saying "I forgot this Pokemon existed"

Dhelmise is also connected with my personal favorite Pokemon, that being Dragalge (and Skrelp's there too), in that they apparently get along with each other. Sorta makes sense when you consider both have seaweed motifs, both are tied with shipwrecks, and both go after large targets, be they tankers or Wailord. Who's to say that a shipwreck that created Dhelmise wasn't caused by a Dragalge defending its territory? We literally see them living in sunken ships in the anime, that's the perfect place to make a new ghost seaweed anchor friend. Here's hoping both make it back into S/V. We saw Clauncher in the first trailer

Dhelmise is by far my personal favorite Pokémon. The way the seaweed wrapped around the anchor vaguely creates the illusion of a sinister smile, how it uses it’s compass eye to emote, and the fact it’s shiny represents red algae! For those wanting to use it in competitive, here’s my setup; Phantom Force Power Whip Anchor Shot Rapid Spin Brave nature Assault Vest Have fun plunderin me mateys!

What I love about Dhelmise is its surprisingly vast movepool. It can excel in a utility, tank, or combat role. Examples of its more useful moves: - Anchor Shot can trap in Pokemon that are easy to setup on. - Coverage moves like Aerial Ace, Brick Break, Earthquake, Knock Off, Liquidation, and Rock Slide - Swords Dance and Growth for setup - Synthesis for recovery - Rapid Spin and Toxic for utility - Powerful STAB moves in Poltergeist, Phantom Force, Grassy Glide and Power Whip - Solar Blade and Steel Roller too I guess What more could you ask for?

Dhelmise fills out so many cool niches both design-wise and gameplay-wise, I love seeing it get some recognition! Hard to believe that we didn't have a super pirate-feeling Pokemon until Gen 7, especially considering Team Aqua's existence. Just the concept of this big spooky ghost face made of kelp wrapped around a shipwreck is peak monster design, and I love all of their weird animations! I remember having no clue what it even was when I first saw a tiny leaked image of it, I... actually thought it was some haunted Mexican painting. Which would make for a fun Regional Dhelmise, now that I think about it, with the seaweed clinging onto the ship's riches rather than their tools. Here's to hoping they return for Scarlet and Violet, they canonically have good terms with Skrelp and considering Clauncher got in, there's hope! Dhelmise feels PERFECT for Spain.

I actually came up with a Pokémon that is somewhat related to Dhelmise. - Phan-O-War, the Ocean Drifter Pokémon. - Water/Ghost. - Based on the Portuguese man-o-war jelly fish, 18th century man-o-war warships, the mythical kraken, and the concept of ghost ships. - Think of it as a ghost kraken living inside a shipwreck that it brought up to the surface. It just looks like a ship sailing past, but it hides its long tentacles beneath the water's surface, waiting to attack anything that comes close, just like how a man-o-war jellyfish would. - Anywhere it goes, Dhelmise are sure to be found close by. - Ability is Toxic Tendrils, which gives STAB to Poison moves, much like Dhelmise's Steelworker.

  • @rjs4176

Ah yes, Dhelmise. My 2nd favourite Grass/Ghost type. Can you tell what my number 1 favourite is? Hehe... While Dhelmise might not be as anthropomorphized as some other objectmon it certainly does still have a face. It's just less deliberate and on the nose so it doesn't distract from its large and intimidating appearance. Making something less emotable to humans is another way to make it more unsettling, perfect for a Ghost type. The seaweed on its front that makes a 5-pointed star has two longer strands on the sides that make large eyebrows. The tangled up coil in the center that connects the wheel and the anchor points outwards appearing like a pointed nose. The rips and tears in the seaweed along the curved bottom of the anchor leaves open spaces that make them look like sharp, scary jaws. When you can point out this many great, little details from just one design you just KNOW you got a special case on your hands! I also just love that it hunts Wailord. I can only imagine what that must have been like in the Game Freak office! GF: Okay, we need to make a pokémon that hunts Wailord, the largest non-legendary pokémon ever. Somebody: Ghost anchor. GF: ... GF: Wait.. wha- Somebody: *_GHOST ANCHOR._* GF: You know what? Sure. We need more ingenuity like Dhelmise in the world. I just know that gen 9 will have some real goodies!

When I first saw Dhelmise I thought it looked like a really cool *water steel* type, and was super upset when I realised it wasn’t a water type. This realisation was coming of the back of realising that Crabrawler also wasn’t a water type. I’d posit that Dhelmise breeds when two Dhelmise get together to combine some of their extra pieces or find pieces from ships. One of them goes out and hunts for perfect parts while the other grafts some of its seaweed onto the parts. And as for the face: the compass is an eye, the anchor is a mouth, and the seaweed forms angry teeth

I remember catching a Dhelmise the first time I ever fished in sun and moon. I then Looked up it’s encounter rate and was shocked to realize that it was a 1% hands encounter

Huh, I didn't know it was that rare. I caught it in the 10% spot on my first try in Sun and never thought twice about it. My team was already full too so I just left it in the box and never thought about it. I don't think I even fished there ever again

Same thing here, I went fishing in this city in my Sun playthrough as soon as I had the opportunity, and I guess I got lucky with that 1% cause it was my very first encounter, I caught it, and although I thought it was a pretty cool mon, and I love ghost and grass types, I picked decidueye as my starter so I never felt the need to use it, had no idea it was that rare tho, had I known that I probably would have benched the owl for a while to try and have fun with it.

It was love at first sight with Dhelmise. Just randomly fishing in Sun&Moon and he pops out, I remember I couldn't stop saying how cool he was.

One of my favorite ideas I have floating around is object-mon that are a similar object or set of objects. Dhelmise is a great idea to build off, shipwrecks are more than anchors and wheels. This idea started as an Aegislash made of two different things than a basic sword and shield. Two swords, a dagger and gauntlet, hook blades, a spear and lantern-shield, a short-sword and banner, etc.

When I originally played through gen 7, I caught Dhelmise and without a second thought put it in the pc. It wasn’t until sword and shield when I explored using some more obscure mons on my team that I took the time to not only find a Dhelmise but shiny hunt it as well! All in all it’s a fantastic Pokémon design and I’m so happy that someone is giving it some recognition!

@4:35 I mean , Dhelmise IS a face , with the compass as the eye, the shaft of the anchor as a nose and the arch at the bottom as a toothy grin. The seaweed purposefully leaves small triangular spaces that resemble spikey teeth , and the whol pokemon has the appearance of a one eyed bearded face

i mean if you look at the bottom anchor part, the spots where the brown show between the green are supposed to be visually like teeth, so technically they anthropomorphized it but in a subtle way.

The first time I ever saw dhelmise was after I already had and planned my full team. I was in seafolk village and decided to fish for no apparent reason. I encountered dhelmise by accident on my first try and loved it since. I probably would’ve put it on my team if I didn’t already have Decidueye.

A thing about dhelmise is that the bit where the sea grass doesn't touch at the bottom of the anchor resembles spiky teeth. Making it seems that it's more malicious than it seems

I spent hours trying to catch Dhelmise in Pokémon sword, and it’s a permanent member for my team, for sure. I just think it’s so cute, (in its own anchor-y way) and it’s color pallet is definitely one of my favorites. Plus I think it’s really cool how it’s basically a three type pokemon. But yeah, by far my favorite ghost type and maybe even my favorite Pokémon of all time. It’s super underrated.

Thank you for this! I didn't catch it while playing sun or sword and I just thought it's such a weird pokemon. Now I think it's such a cool concept and unique Design - and typing. I always loved grass-types and it would be such a useful addition to a grass-type team.
