Dhalsim is stronger than you think

Ойындар

Today we're talking Dhalsim in Street Fighter 6! Why is this character so underplayed in sf6? Personally I think he has the potential to be top tier, though he does have some major problems that hold him back. Also: I'm gonna show you guys the final matches that carried me to Master Rank with the stretchy yoga master!

@@greenheroesGlass cannons usually just have low life and stun, the don't completely lack defensive tools like Dhalsim does. The reason for this is that his entire play style is defensive at its core. If the actually gave him real defensive tools like a reversal it would completely break the balance. It would mean there was no advantage gained from finally getting in on him, which usually requires that you eat some damage in exchange for closing the distance. If you then had to worry about eating an invincible reversal, he would be very unfair.

Honestly everyone I hear talk about Dhalsim seems to say the same thing, it's not that they think he's weak, in most cases they have no idea where he belongs on tier lists since they encounter him so rarely. Instead, the reason they say they don't main him is because they don't find his play style intuitive or a good fit for them. Specifically, the low level players I talk to don't understand how to use him compared to the rest of the cast, so they just give up and play some one more straight forward, and the higher level players tell me they just don't jive with the way it appears you need to play him to do well, so they play a character whose style they say fits them better. Granted my sample size isn't huge or anything, but that's the consistent message I've gotten from people when I ask them why they don't play Dhalsim. If he starts winning championships left and right I could see some of the more tier list influenced people I know giving him a second look, but just being top tier I don't think is enough when there are other top tier characters whose tools they prefer.

He's a lot of fun to play and his wins are very satisfying. it's true that knockdowns are his biggest weakness but a reversal I feel like would go against his keep away style. I feel he needs an evade move like a multi directional roll away after knockdown, that could be interesting.

I think one of the things that's interesting about sim is that once he's doing zoning and longer range pressure, he can build drive gauge decently easy. Most of his long pokes give drive back on block, and so does his fireball. In addition, he can use his normals to try to target when the opponent let's go of parry to deny their gauge while building his own

One thing you can do to deal with throws is instant air heavy drill: if they throw you get a punish counter which does a little damage and puts you in plus frames, often ppl scramble because it's hard to react to and you'll get a counterhit combo after which can get you out of the corner. If they try to shimmy you'll tend to get hit out of the air which usually hurts less than a successful shimmy and rarely you'll actually hit their shimmy with the drill and get a combo or the same situation with a throw. Weirdest of all if they neutral jump sometimes they'll just miss somehow and you'll travel under them (depends on the button they press and the character). It still loses bad to meaties and it takes skill and timing to do but it's a nice tertiary option.

Congrats. From what I see on you vid, seems that SIm requires the drive meter to launch any of your offensive combos and drive reversal. This can result in possibly being in burn out quite often unless you can waste enough time zoning to rebuilt the drive meter. Sim also seems pretty immune to perfect parry.

Echoing what you said at the beginning about getting to master and never fighting a dhalsim, the matchmaking in this game seems very weird as well. I would rarely ever play against a Lily in bronze and silver and the first 3 games I played in gold were all 3 different Lily's back to back to back. And mirror matchups seem to be the rarest, I've played against more dhalsim and blanka than I have against other cammy's despite her being 3rd most popular.

I'm maining Sim right now. He's so rarely seen that you can see that people have no idea how to fight him. I mean, there are people with Ryu and Ken trying to zone him out, which is insane, Jamies trying to back dash and drink like they are not fighting a character that can kick you in the face from half screen, others see the teleport and block instead of jab, etc. Until platinum, he looks S tier, but the moment you start facing high diamonds it's rough. I have seen tier list that puts him between B and A and imo that's his place. The "problem" in high ranks is that there are so many Juri, Cammy and DJ that it's tough. He does quite well against Ken and Guile though.

After also achieving master with sim, I can agree, yes his neutral is great, but it's hard to get to play it because its so easy to drive rush, Di, Jump, and neutral skip through it, and once you get hit one time like you said, you're in the corner and you're gonna take endless throw loops and guess for game. If DR didn't exist in this game and maybe if drive reversal was more reliable he'd be top tier like SFV.

In my experience, you have to teach the lower ranked players the lessons that higher ranked players already know - Don't mindlessly jump vs dhalsim. If you don't stuff them at least 3 or 4 times, they are just going to keep jumping in on you and punish your long normals. Once they respect you a bit, only then can you being playing and developing.

This is the same way a lot of beginner but still thinking and learning players often feel when playing poker online in the micro stakes, mostly No Limit Hold em. They'll often express that they want to move up in stakes, because it is too hard to bluff players at the lowest levels, because they aren't really thinking about their opponents hand or actions, they are only thinking about their own hand and calling when they have any kind of value to their hand. This reminds me so much of SF, and it should be handled the same way. In poker, when up against these kind of players, we play a more ABC 123 style, meaning we just bet our value hands and almost never bluff, and in addition, we can but for extremely thin value against these players, doing things like virtually always betting top pair top kicker across all three streets and getting paid off almost every time they have something, even as bad as third pair and all the way up to top pair second kicker. To translate this to SF, we still go back to ABC123, meaning we just abuse their tendencies the same why, like anti airing every jump in over and over until they stop jumping, then abusing them with pokes or very simple mixups, like fireball, teleport behind. The same way we wouldn't bluff weak players in poker, we aren't going to get too complex against weak players in SF, meaning even after we hit 3 fireball, teleports in a row, we stick to it and don't mix it up with teleporting to the front until they literally prove that the can block the cross up, the same way we wouldn't start bluffing until the opponent proves to us he can lay down a value hand against a bet.

I wanted to play him but i found it so hard to do his combos with consistency, why did they made the buttons that hit close and that you can do combos needs you to press back to do them? It only makes the combos harder to do, and just pressing these buttons makes him use the long range attacks that you cant combo into anything, should't it be the other way around? It Would be so much easier to do his combos.

It's just like every other fighting game, especially Street Fighter games. When a new version comes out, specifically and especially a new core version, like a new sequel, the easiest and most basic strategies dominate for the first 6-12 months, maybe even longer depending on how effective they are. This usually translates to whatever character has the easiest time doing the most damage. Remember, there was a time when Birdie dominated the early days of SF5, and Sagat dominated almost the entire core version of SF4. Birdie was a grappler with huge damage after comboing into Super, and grapplers basically always have the most elementary strategies. Sagat had easy, intuitive zoning and extremely high damage, and could anti-air into Ultra in a variety of different ways very easily, in addition to being able to DP FADC into Ultra. In SF6 it appears that in the early stages, Luke and Guile are the dominant forces. Luke is very easy to use with tons of plus frames. He has good damage and excellent corner carry in a SF game where the corner is more important than ever. He also has every single tool you could need, including both an incredible fireball as well as an anti-fireball Super. Guile is an extremely easy to use zoner who can control the match from full screen. In addition, Guile has an incredibly strong footsies game at the mid range, and on top of both of those, he can also rush down really well, especially after his Super that buffs his booms and allows him to throw a bunch of the tiny ones at slow speed, without charge, and with several on the screen at once, an ability no other character in SF history has ever been able to match. I don't know for how long these characters will remain on top, but barring any balance changes, it's my feeling that Guile will continue to be strong because he has multiple versatile gameplans, but eventually as players are better able to get optimal damage on every touch, it will weaken Guile's zoning quite a bit, as well as his mid range footsies to a much lesser extent. But despite having all of the tools, I think Luke will fall down when players begin to optimize more specialized characters, both their damage and their mixups. There will just be better options than him, and his versatility will ultimately become a weakness.

For Sagat specifically, he fell off because he was doing TOO much damage at the start, but the developers fixed that with updates. Bafael's Bad Balance video on the topic is def a recommended watch.

But please give him an invincible level 1 anyway, that would help a lot of the frustration.

Game developers, frown on characters that are rarely used. I have played literally thousands of games and I’ve noticed a pattern that rarely used characters always get updated the most so that they can be played more frequently. So do you think that there will be updates to Dhalsim’s move set to help him get picked up more often?

Hate to break the perfect trifecta but guile is a defensive character with a projectile, not a zoner with defense tools, that and although I agree, zoners tend to be way more dynamically, if a character is ridiculously played across franchises and games

Me reading the title. You mean to tell me he’s even MORE broken than I initially think he is?! In seriousness though, due to the lack of match up, Dhalsim tends to be my weakest matchup reguardless of my main or secondary. Which are Ken and Manson respectively.

  • @prismaticowl
    @prismaticowl11 ай бұрын

The up side to playing the lowest-played character is just that you have the advantage of no one knowing how to deal with you. If you're fighting Ken, you know how to get around his stuff. If you're fighting Marisa, you probably know when it's safe to attack. Dhalsim can punch you from halfway around the globe then warp behind you to throw you over the mountain. At some point I'll need to buckle down and burn actual combos to memory, but mid-Gold and super casual, I'm still winning more than I feel like my scrubby ass _should_ be, and it's mostly down to no one having practice against him. That's the strength of the lower-tier/lesser-played characters. Sim's all about keeping cool and forcing the opponent into your flow of battle. If you get them acting scared to do anything for fear of eating a foot, the match is going your way. The worst part of Dhalsim is just that neither costume is that great, honestly.

Dhalsim isn't played much because his skill floor is insanely high, 1 of if not the highest in the game. However if you do put the work and learn how to play him, his skill ceiling is also incredibly high so he's a very rewarding character to learn and master.
