Angela Bassett is very respected among her peers and can get the passion votes. Kerry Condon isn't known enough in the industry. And rewarding Colin Farrell, might be enough.

1.) 65% broadcast TV is declining, 35% people are caring less. 2.) I watch because I love cinema and art and the celebration and recognition of it keeps the business of it alive. 3.) rating would definitely go up on streaming.
Best show on You Tube right now. Very smart discussions and they respect their own opinions even when they don't agree. Keep it up guys!
Perri! I am Irish and you are pronouncing it correctly!
I need to watch half of these movies still! I love how Perri always looks shocked by things that Jeff says haha.
As an international movie fan, I am veeeery excited about the move to streaming for the SAGs (and potentially other shows in the future). Besides the Oscars, none of the awards shows are broadcast here and even with a VPN it is suuuper difficult to find a way to watch a stream somewhere. My Globes stream was a mess and I missed 1/4 of the speeches. Netflix would be so much easier

Why, Perry and Jeff, overruling Angela Bassett for Oscar noms when she got SAG nod. Are you forgetting that there is a big percentage of the actors branch in the Oscars?

The Oscars are really an international event, and as a non us citizen, I'd love to be able to stream it live on netflix. As for the show having value for a streaming service, I think the value is - keeping existing subscribers satisfied, which should be important to services that have been seeing a decline in subscribers in two consecutive quarters.
Guys, about the awards shows, I'm from Brazil and i dont get NBC here, so i need to find a link somewhere to watch, moving it to a streaming service i think could bring a more broad globeal audience, even though people really are disconected to awards shows, but the ones who enjoy it may get a chance to watch it live and bring some numbers.

I think when it comes to the 5th slot for some of these awards (Director, Actor, Supporting Actress) and other categories you have to look to the support of the International branch where the membership has grown the most. Answering the question at 37:20 - I don't watch the actual shows. I might change that if I could watch them at 1.5x speed online. But currently, I don't watch most awards shows, and only sometimes watch the Academy Awards if I'm super interested in a couple of the races. But I always seek out the reactions to all the shows online. I watch several different movie review channel's reactions to the GGs, the SAGs, the Oscars, etc.
I’m interested in hearing all of your thoughts on the final hour campaign for Andrea Risebourough in To Leslie. I have found the social media push to be very aggressive the last couple of days.
Nominating a woman to fulfill a quota is not the argument anyone is making. The point is that it’s impossible not to notice a pattern over many seasons where projects directed by women go unrecognized. I can’t believe it’s just men consistently dominating the category on merit alone.
@thrawncaedusl717
Жыл бұрын
20% of movies are directed by women. On average, you would expect one nomination in a group of five, but 0 nominations is just as likely as 2 nominations. This year, 4 of the positions are locks that practically nobody can argue with. If you think Polley should be number 5, say that (I’d personally have her above the Daniels, McDonough, and Kosinski, but I know that’s unpopular), but saying “4 women made good movies so one of them must get in” is arguing for a quota, and I strongly oppose that argument.
Great convo all! I really think Paul Mescal, Jeremy Pope, John Boyega or Cooper Raif, Ralph Finnes could fill that fifth slot. They are all deserving. And I do think Charlotte Wells deserves a nom. I would keep Kosinski tho because he does too. Imo. I’d actually put Cameron, Wells, Kosinski, Daniels as locks with the fifth being Spielberg, Polly, Ostend, McDonnagh or Field. Perri Rocks !! There should be room for everyone i celebrating film. Actually Everyone.

I’d watch it more easily on streaming specially because it would be more accessible around the world. In Portugal we don’t always get US broadcast.
I watch all the award shows regardless of platform but I do agree with Perri in that their contracts would most likely shrink significantly from their network deals. Mostly due to the fact that streaming services don't have the ad revenue of networks that allows them to pay these ridiculous prices.
I don't have easy access to these awards shows in the UK - if they were on Netflix I would be watching - I think a worldwide audience is there and waiting
In the streaming debate, streaming will be great for us international fans that sometimes cant watch the awards legally
Will Lisa Marie Presley's tragic sudden death have any influence on Oscar voters? She was a big proponent of Elvis the movie and Austin Butler. Her last public appearance was at the Golden Globes supporting the picture. Will Academy members vote for the movie or Austin Butler as a kind of memorial to Lisa Marie?
Variety has Spielberg, Kosinski, Field, McDonagh and wells as top contenders with Daniels, ostlund, Luhrman, Berger and Inarrtiu right behind. So if that helps

But yes, I agree about the sentiments that accessibility on streaming is a much larger issue for awards viewership and would likely help for at least getting eyes on the screen. The other issue is attention span (most would rather look at a Twitter feed and see bite sized clips of winners).
Really enjoyed Geniuses Sneider is other level!
I would definitely watch if it were on Netflix. The reason no one watches is that nobody has cable anymore, we all just have a few streaming services. As someone that is the target demo for awards shows and hasn’t been watching as regularly as I would I 100% think the awards ratings have plummeted because of their exclusive airing on network television. Most people of my generation (born 1980) and younger have been anti network cord cutters for years now. When talking with friends the biggest hurdle has been not being able to watch because its on network tv. Used to be that network tv was ubiquitous and easy to access but not anymore. Joseph Kosinski directed the most difficult movie to direct .. PERIOD
I have been saying this for years, but the Oscars would benefit greatly if they allowed users to stream the show, nobody of my generation (gen z) has access to broadcast TV. It is a hassle every year to try and watch the Oscars! When a majority of the world doesn't rely on broadcast tv anymore, why would ABC or the Oscar producers expect viewership to rise? Why should anyone expect that? Its just not happening! I still believe there is a world where Oscars do matter and can be a positive influence for any kid who's interested in filmmaking or movie journalism, but as it stands, the Oscars continually make rash decisions that alienate the fanbase they already have in favor of a fanbase they know nothing about (using twitter for popular film, shortening speeches for below the line award, and getting Jimmy Kimmel to host yet again bc he's popular on KZread/social media). The Oscars need to feel like a genuine celebration of movies, and as a celebration, you want to share the festivities! Streaming is that one barrier that could open up the doors for the Oscars, younger generations have a higher chance of discovering the awards show and older generations who have abandoned regular TV can rediscover what makes the Oscars so great again. More people saw clips of the Oscars last year because they could easily access the clips through twitter and KZread. Not every year should be mired with controversy like last year, but the fact remains that more people found out the Oscars were happening that night because of social media and not because they sat down and watched it on ABC. JUST STREAM IT! The results may not be immediate but in the long run I think the benefits out way the alternative which is yet another year where Variety or whoever writes another article about Oscar viewership dipping. Viewership will rise when access to the awards show is LEGIT universal. Streaming can increase viewership overseas as well! Plenty of people overseas have to struggle to watch. It's not just domestic viewers struggling to keep up.

My sentiments exactly!
My take is the major award shows needs to take a play from the video game awards (the only award show that people seem to care about mind you ) and live stream it for free On Twitch or You Tube, Because to me putting on streaming service A: makes these award shows more “ elites” as everyone got ABC And NBC , And CBS for free, meaning everyone who cares about award shows watch it, but not everyone has Hulu or Netflix B: Live streaming I think allows for more community engagement.
Well I will always watch the Oscars regardless where they are broadcast. But I would probably watch the other award shows if they were on Netflix because I don't always pay too much attention to those.
I think EEAAO is more of a media darling than anything and won’t end up getting much awards love except for Quan, who is adorable in it. I gave the film itself a half hour and then I was out. It was way too frenetic and downright smug. It reminded me why I hate the modern day Doctor Who series so much. And the modern day Sherlock Holmes series. I’m glad Michelle Williams was snubbed. I thought her performance was a crock of shite, all LOOK AT ME! I’M ACTING! And in the close-ups she looked unintentionally creepy. And I loved her in Fosse/Verdon.
I don't see how The Fabelmans is "fading". It won the Globe for Drama and Director AND scored the triple crown of the Guilds -- PGA, DGA and SAGE. Right now, I think it is between Banshees, Everything and the Fabelmans. Best money is on any of those three. Joseph Kosinski getting a DGA nomination for huge for him and the film. But at the same time, how I can consider TGM to be a "front-runner" if it didn't score any relevant SAG nominations (Stunt Ensemble isn't an Oscar category)? The best pathway for TGM is to win the PGA, WGA (adapted), and ACE or PGA and WGA. The ratings for award shows are down for two reasons: (1) Less and less people are watching "television television". People would rather spend money on streaming services and high speed internet. Moving these to streaming makes a whole lots of sense. More accessible to audiences. We cannot logically use the same metrics of the past for viewership. (2) Celebrities are all over social media platforms. People tuned in because they want to see famous people, now it is everything.

I've rewatched the Tony Awards 3 times because it was on Paramount+. I've had to pay for live TV to see the Globes and I'd prefer not to do that because it's so expensive, so yeah, I think a move to streaming would make more sense.
