    We need this on EVERY rail crossing. So that those who refuse to stop for the flashing red lights or who try to go around the booms get a very unpleasant surprise along with a big tyre repair bill.

    Notice the gates go all the way across the pavement, not just the lane of traffic in one direction. Better and cheaper than 4 quadrant gates used in some places in the USA.

    GREAT IDEA!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏 As someone has already mentioned that those who try to continue their journey at any cost will pay for a expensive tyre repair bill or possibly the wheels aswell depending on how desperate they are to continue ( possibly stolen then they won't pay for damages) of which a criminal SHOULD BE MADE TO PAY!!! Whatever the country they are in for a owners car damage whatever the cost. But, these things look as if they make a HUGE difference to traffic control & DEFINITELY!!! should be installed on every level road & railway crossing.

    What a simple impressive system, in England this would stop the barrier dodgers, would rip their tyres to pieces.👍👍

    This pair of videos deserves more viewers. Very well done, fascinating. Is the crossing and raising of the cogs always done manually??

    For those asking about the details, this is a heritage steam line that only operates in the summer, this crossing is an engineering solution to the very special needs of the line. It's all operated by radio from the train. [wiki]

    I have driven up and down the Furka Pass many time on holidays in Switzerland, so I must have crossed the railway here. What was there before the retractable rack? I don't remember bumping over the rack at full height!

    Interesting design. The center rail tells me it is a cog railway, but the drivers on. The engine wheels tells me it is a regular locomotive. Is it some kind of combination unit?

  • @Funimag

    @Funimag

    3 жыл бұрын

    It is cog wheel steam train which can climb slope (with rack) sections. It can also roll on normal flat (no rack) sections.

  • @robbridges7810

    I think this is for a steep incline, maybe! So the train won’t spin its wheels.

    The rack is used to climb steep slopes. This is a mountain train which climbs the mountain and the Furka pass at more than 2100 m high! This train runs during summer only.

    Level crossings, now with added stinger! I would think you'd just roll over it each way though, I mean it's not really that big of a gal with all that momentum behing you.

    I think it is continuous to maintain synchronisation between wheels and cogs. Although there are systems which can re-establish the synchronisation they are probably more expensive to build and maintain than this system.

    Why would you need to raise and lower the rack on the roadway. The track is level at that point.

  • @Funimag

    @Funimag

    3 жыл бұрын

    No... at level crossing the track is not flat... there is a small slope.

  • @houstonceng

    @houstonceng

    3 жыл бұрын

    Even if the track was flat, you could not guarantee that the wheels would not slip. If you left the rack at one side of the road, there is no guarantee that the rack would be exactly engaged when you met it again. Chance of proven cogs, or worse. Best, therefore, to have a continuous rack.

    Yeah, you need to have a continuous rack on a rack railway. Bad things happen when cogs lose the rack and then abruptly re-engage.

    @@ArchTeryx00 Not necessarily. The railway from Meiringen to Lucerne has racks only in some places. The loco engages and disengages the rack at low speed.
