I intentionally went a little bit long with this ranking. I originally was going to do individual season reviews leading up to the finale of New Blood, but Fall 2021 just turned out to be way too busy. So I unfortunately it didn't happen. So I wanted to put more of my thoughts in this video.

Don't Forget About The Louis Plot Line That Went No Where But Was Supposed To Go Somewhere Really Interesting. The Actor Who Played Him Ducked Out Last Minute For A Lead Role in Some Movie I've Never Even Seen. I Think They Were Setting Him Up To Be The Ice Truck Killer's Son. That Would Have Been Really Interesting. Instead, Nope, He's A Petty Little Shit Who Hates Dexter Because Of His Video Game.

Love the channel Sean!! Keep it up! The only seasons I don’t really rewatch often are seasons 6 and 8 but I think 5 and 7 are underrated I love Isaac Sirko as a character good and bad he nailed it! And the sort of more than just one villain in season 5 was a nice change of pace, it was nice to see quite a few formidable foes then ending with Jordan Chase was just great tv 🤘🏼💯

I totally agree. In fact I liked 5 & 7 more than 2 & 3, which is an unpopular opinion.

I can't give a definitive ranking for each season but I will say my Top Seasons are split in between 1 and 3. Season 1 is honestly one of the most creative tv shows I've ever watched and drips with not only potential but originality,with the ending Scene of Dexter holding a Parade in his own head for his deeds being a masterpiece. Season 3 is vastly underrated due to the twisted Relationship/Rivalry with Miguel Prado's actor being such a slimey yet likable antagonist. Season 2 is pretty good but If I could change 2 things in wouldve been to keep Lyla West and Sgt Doakes around somehow and not have them hunt for Dexter until later on.

Season 8 was absolutely horrendous. And while shows like Lost had final seasons and finale episodes that divided the fanbase, I've never seen anyone who said they like the end of season 8 of Dexter. And Sean you're absolutely correct about the antagonist from season 8 being forgettable. I remember a lot about the show Dexter though I haven't watched it in a long time. I absolutely forgot who was the killer in season 8 and actually don't even remember there being one. I 100% agree that season 4 was the best. I thought that would be controversial placing it above the first season

While I agree that adding the ''Deb in love with Dexter'' storyline in season 6 was unnecessary, actually it made sense. For me at least. I always suspected that there was something more behind their relationship other than regular brother-sister love. Jennifer Carpenter, revealed to Red Carpet News TV she always knew Deb was in love with Dexter on some level, so she played it like that from the start. I noticed the signs. Just a few examples that came to mind now: In season 2 Deb described to Dexter how loud she could be during sex while Dexter was embarrassed by the subject; In season 3 after Deb got a new hairstyle and Dexter praised it, telling her it was ''beautiful'' Deb suddenly became all shy if not blushed, BUT the most hilarious scene was when in season 2 Deb walked into the room where Dexter lay naked on the bed after he just had sex with Lila and had to cover himself quickly, because Deb stood there and talked - Dexter even asked: ''Deb, did knocking occur to you?'' :D

I’m glad you mentioned the books, Sean. Because you are right. There are elements that similar to the first book. However the rest of the season and the series as a whole is so unlike the book series. And I must say the books go an interesting direction, but fall apart at the end. And I just only recently realized I thought I had read all the books. I only read up to Dexter’s Final Cut. I didn’t realize there was another book. Dexter is Dead. I looked up the ending…it’s not much better. Maybe you can do a book ranking of the Dexter series. Would love to hear your thoughts on the book series ending for this character that no one can satisfyingly end. Lol

I can't really rank the seasons(haven't seen the new one yet), but when I watched this show for the first time in 2017, I binged all 8 season in like 3 weeks. Since I binged it this heavily I just really enjoyed all of it and can't really remember anything bad, apart from the ending scene and I found season 3 to be a bit boring. Other than that I remember really enjoying everything else. I don't really want to rewatch the show, because some seasons are probably worse than I remember.

My personal ranking would be 9. Season 8 8. Season 6 7. Season 5 6. Season 3 5. Season 9 (I loved New Blood, not a perfect ending but an amazing season imo) 4. Season 7 3. Season 2 2. Season 1 1. Season 4

The stuff about season 2 is very good. I had more or less always thought of it as the best season because of the pressures and the FBI manhunt. In hindsight, however, the ending where they copped out and basically reset the status quo without forcing Dexter to make hard choices about Doakes really undermines it, and there are other examples of forcing the plot, especially in the drama with Rita, where her confrontation with him over his framing Paul was clearly intended to get the outcome the writers wanted, without really earning it. Dexter rolls over awfully easy and lets Rita assume the drug thing when all he'd have to do is offer to go with her for a drug test. "How do you know how to..." is a dumb question to ask in the age of the internet, especially of a person who studies how criminals do things. Also the sitcom-esque misunderstanding to split up Dexter and Rita is another example of plot-driven writing that does not feel true to the character. Rita's eventual conclusion, telling her mom to shove her nosiness, and realizing that Dexter is the best thing to happen to her family, is not character development, that's more or less what Rita had always believed before her sudden concern for Dexter's method of getting rid of her abuser. They just gave her a circular development for season 2 so they could create the plot points they wanted. Rita suddenly learning that Dexter is an addict capable of cold-bloodedly framing a man and sending him to jail, not to mention so capable of deception as to hide any hint of his addiction from a once-bitten love interest - this should have shattered her and grievously undermined any trust she had or regained for him. This should have hung over their relationship and been a serious obstacle to their marriage, but as with Doakes discovering the truth about Dexter, they just handwaved it away so they could keep the status quo running.

Dexter is one of my all time favorite tv shows. I have only seen the first episode of New Blood so I can't properly rank it. My ranking best to worst is Seasons 1,7,2,4,6,5,3,8. Season 1 is my absolute favorite and the best in my opinion. I enjoy Seasons 6 and 7 more than most fans. Season 4 is very good but a bit overrated and is slow in the middle of the season. This was a great ranking and breakdown Sean!

I love every episode of Dexter besides Season 8 and the series final of New Blood

Interesting video and very enjoyable to hear your thoughts. Mostly I agreed with your ranking and points, especially with season 5. But for me New Bloods ending was actually quite satisfying. Sure it probably could have been better but for example I think Dexter had to escape at that moment. There was no way he could have made it through without going to jail. Dexter walking free after season 7 was already quite unbeliavable considering how much evidence LaGuerta had and all the things unveiled from his past. So I felt that Dexter was feeling the same way and just had to kill Logan. But yeah it would have been nice to see Dexter and Batista face to face

Why did dexter have to escape at that moment? How is consistent with dexters character to just kill someone who didn’t fit the code? How is him escaping by killing someone only to die a satisfying payoff for his character arc throughout the seasons? I don’t see how it fit his character or his arc

@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout I don't think he had a better time to escape than that one. After Batistas arrival he would've been under much heavier surveillance. I'm pretty sure Dexter has killed innocent people before. Wasn't he in the middle of killing LaGuerta before Deb arrived? Dexter has always been a killer, the code was just a way of justifing it but in tight situations I feel he would kill innocent people. After all the shows whole point has been that he is a psychopath who doesn't feel for other people. I always felt that Dexter had to die but I was also worried that they were going to do it that way where Dexter is desperately trying to get away, pleading for his lives and doing all kinds of despicable moves trying to continue living. So in that way it was satisfying to see that he in a way chose this himself. Dexter of season 1 would have gotten away but now the emotions and remorse got him

The infuriating thing about season 6 was that everything was building up to Dexter getting finally found out by Deb, but they were trying to set up why she would accept what he is and does, so they came up with the asinine thing where Deb falls in love with him. The problem, aside from that being dumb, was they had already done a lot of set up for that in season 5, where Deb is balked at the bureaucracy of the PD and is confronted with horrible Santa Muerte killers, then the barrel girls case, it got Deb to a place where she could let the killers go at the end because her experiences with the department (such as her betrayal by both her boss and her protegee) and the cases, including her first fatal shooting on the job, made her believe that sometimes justice comes from outside the law, and there is a place for vigilante killings. All they had to do if they wanted to have Dexter get discovered by Deb without totally undoing the show, was build on her character development from Season 5. It's like Scott Buck didn't recognize what he had to work with and made up something new (and dumb) on the spot.

The high point is season 4. If you choose to watch to season 8, you might as well watch new blood. I can’t say whether you should keep watching. My curiosity wouldn’t allow me to stop a show I’m enjoying mid show.

I haven't watched new blood yet, so I will watch this video after I do but I just finished season 8 and wow that finale is baffling. But for the mean time here is my ranking for the first 8 seasons. 1. Season 1 2. Season 4 3. Season 5 4. Season 3 5. Season 7 6. Season 2 7. New Blood 8. Season 8 9. Season 6 Just finished new blood and you are right those last 20 minutes are baffling. Why did he have to kill officer Logan when we have literally seen him do the sleeper holder on like a million guys before? And why even introduce Bautista if you arent going to do anything with it? Great video though, this was one of your best.

Good video, I agree with your analysis, except on the season 9. I liked what they tried to do with it. But unfortunately for Dexter (and for us) they didn't succeed in it. Super spoilers ahead . . In my opinion Dexter can’t live a normal life, he can’t choose to leave the code behind. The code is the only thing that makes him human and the “discovery of his humanity” is an illusion. he wanted to reach it, he always tried all the ways possible to reach it but he failed all the time: at the end of season 1 saving Deb, with Lila on season 2, loving Rita (season 3/4), looking at Prado (season 3), helping Lumen (season 5), and following Sam (season 7). No comment about Hanna, all of this character has no sense. In season 9 they slowly introduced the character of Harrison and the (more and more realistic) hypothesis of his dark passenger. One step before the happy ending something happens (in the 8th season was Debra in hospital, now is Angela). Dexter is finally caught and in the end he realizes it: he has no more cards to play. It's over. In this situation Dexter finally reveals his true nature to us, truth that Harry knew (he killed himself for this) and truth we all knew but never wanted to realise and tell: he's not an hero, it's not for the thousands of people he saved, the code is just a way to justify his actions and his necessity to kill, that is stronger than everything. At this point, Logan death is ok. I understand it and Dexter's actions match with the character. After that, the final shock for the viewer, Harrison sees who Dexter really is. The son has nothing broken in him, all of his problems were caused by an absent father, the murder of his mother and probably the growing up with hanna (a serial killer too). Harrison has a few problems for sure but no dark passenger, Dexter and the choice Dexter made, ruined the son. At this point, Harrison that kills Dexter it's ok. There is no dark passenger/phantom in the car with him while he's going away. It's a super ending. It's even ok dexter's last thought: "I never loved anybody until now" after he told the same words to Deb, Hanna and Rita. Dexter thinks that he can feel love, he wanted it to be real but it's another lie, an illusion that he's telling himself (like the "i'm killing only bad people"). He has no real emotion. He can't love. Even now it's not real love. They made us to love a serial killer for 9 seasons! And in the last 10 minutes they showed us who he really is, and not with some strange plot twist. This truth has always been there. This is the best finale possible. And I want to rate it 11/10. BUT nothing of this is rappresenting what I saw. What I saw it's a different story, very badly written. Nothing of the decisions that characters made in the last episode has any sense. And many others in the episodes before this. Kurt was released simply telling “it wasn’t me, maybe my father, donno, maybe I was sleeping.” Kurt knows that Dex killed his son by what? No real explaination. Angela would need more time to figure out who is Dexter to be realistic. She would need more and stronger evidence to make Dexter desperate. Dexter has no good reason to kill Logan, there would be a thousand ways to save himself. Batista. Why he's in this show if he never meet Dexter again? Bad choice, in my opinion. Why angela lets harrison escape? It does not make sense. Do you want to write the poetic ending of Harrison walking slowly away? Ok for me: do not make them meet in the crime scene. Easy. Realistic. And many other details that has no sense! This ending (and the entire show, too) needed one more season to be built. Or at least more episodes. Too soon, too quick. Dexter and fans did not deserve this and writers failed to do it. It could have been everything, super. This ending is nothing. My ranks 4 2 1 5 3 9 7 6 8

I actually came away thinking S6 was my favorite. I thought the spiritual aspect was interesting. But thinking back on it, Trinity Killer (S4) was the best and most memorable

Great vid Sean! Here’s my ranking: starting with only season here I genuinely hate: 9. Season 8: by far one of my least favourite seasons of tv ever! No need for expansion but I didn’t care for the whole motherhood theme with Dr Evelyn Vogel, Masuka’s daughter or the apprentice kid and really really hated the Villain, everything with Deb and the ending. 1/10 now for two seasons I liked some aspects of but that left a bad taste in mouth due to poor execution: 8. Season 6: for me this season is really not that great. The villains are weak and the “Twist” is pretty obvious. Detective Mike Anderson is so boring. Also the religious theme is bit overused. I liked when Deb found out but thought she should have figured it out sooner and not in that way. However, I do enjoy Brother Sam and those crazy fanatic followers of Travis. The scene where Dexter is locking this bitch with the gas was epic! 5.1/10 7. Season 9: I kinda liked the slower paste and Kurt was great and if it weren’t for the last 25 minutes this season was pin my top 5... but the last 25 minutes ruined an entire season... 5.2/10(again, thanks to that awful ending) Now for the one season that is mid tier for me: 6. Season 5: there were some nice moments but the season was pretty uneven. Lumen was not meaningful in the end. Also chase wasn’t that great of a villain but I did liked some of the other bad guys. The part I liked the most was that guy who tranquilised Dexter and the whole situation was really funny to me. I also hated how bad Dexter and Estor relationship got and how he handled things. 6.5/10 all the seasons from here on I really like to love. Season 3: I loved the Cuban vibe of this season. Miguel is my favourite character! So great and his chemistry with Dexter and Laguerta was awesome. The skinner was ok but many uninteresting side plots like Deb’s romance and that other Latina cop that screws her over. 8.6/10 4. Season 7: a great return to form! Issak Sirko is a great main villain and Seltzer was one of the best “freaks of the weak”. I loved Laguerta in this season, especially her relationship with washed up former Deputy Chief Thomas Mathews. I liked the nerdy guy who dated with Jamie and his whole cat and mouse game with Dexter but didn’t like how meaningless he was in the end. Only two things I didn’t like were the Angel’s running a restaurant and the Queen/stripper love story. 8.7/10 3. Season 2: I loved Doakes and Lila and everything including the FBI investigation of the Bay Harbor Butcher but thought they used this plot line to soon and that this could have been the plot of the last season... and Rita(which I usually like) was annoying on this season. Also didn’t care for how fast Deb got into a new relationship after almost marrying Brian just a season earlier. 8.9/10 2. Season 4: such a great season. Trinity was sick! The Thanksgiving episode was amazing! And that ending! Deb relationship with Londey wasn’t as cringe as season 2. My favourite side kill was that bitch cop who killed her family. Angel and Laguerta are great in this season, also Dexter and Rita. Only thing that brings it down for me is how often Dexter is getting of with ditching work or family duties and how no one cared. They really stretched it in this season. 9.4/10 1. Season 1. This is actually my favourite first season in tv. I binged it in two days. The story is at its best here. Deb is great and Harry is amazing. From Doakes to Masuka and Angel, everyone is great. Rita and kids are good as well and everything seems natural. The “freak of the week” killers are memorable. The Ice Truck Killer and his whole cat and mouse game with Dexter is amazing, as well as his background and relation to Dex. The best thing about this season is the character of Dexter who I instantly fell in love with. Such a weird and great character, he made the series! 10/10!!!

While there are issues after season 4 I always feel their biggest problem is they come after season 4. Season 4 is as close to perfect as you can get and when you have such a season issues that before then you let go now don't get that benefit. I guess its the problem with TV shows, early on you can often get away with issues and can grow from it but if you do learn from these you can produce a great season but as you don't know how many seasons you will have you use up the best ideas and each season makes the story more convoluted all while the audience gets less and less forgiving as they now know how great it really can be. I guess its similar to movies but with less time to tell a story in a movie and more time to come up with new ideas than a TV show its maybe slightly easier

I think it wouldve been fun if they went to Miami for the finale instead of ending it where they did. Also Harrison shouldve ended up with the baby sitter (Angel's sister).

favourites - 1/2/4/5 good - 3/7 eh - 6 ass - 8 idk where to put new blood because I enjoyed it up until the last episode which I think ruined the whole thing for me. it was soooo disappointing and we missed out on so much things we deserved and not how dexters story should be ended. bonus: favourite 1 season characters - sirko - lumen - brother sam

I dont get all the hate for the New Blood ending, i interpret the ending to mean Dexter cant change and always evades legal punishment so his punishment came outside the law and his son being the one to do it adds another interesting element

I think my personal problem is Hannah I just rewatched Dexter a few weeks ago on s7 the problem is that they always get Dexter with a new women every season (after s4) and it gets so frustrating and I think Hannah is a shity character and overall a waste but I think Quinn not suspecting Dexter kinda makes sense since Dexter cleaned up his own mess by accidentally framing Quinn for his murder in s5 but then saved him from getting arrested and losing his job over it so it basically repaired their relationship Quinn even approved Dexter for killing Saxon

Cause season 5 was 10x better than New Blood and Jordan Chase "Take It" 😂 line is just epic.

Season 2 is the best to me, all the aspects Shines to a 99% while other Season even Season 4 lacked ( but almost break even to season 2 just because of "trinity" )

Season 2 is fucking amazing but I disagree. Season 1 and 4 both have better episodes all throughout the season than 2 does. And I mean come on you can't beat Brian Moser and Trinity.

@@Paul-bi4wj well I like Season 4, for some reason I never connected with Season 1, and Season 4 dragged a little bit in the middle, I just think Season 2 have a better consistency of episodes , a better premiere, a better middle and a pretty good final episodes, ( obviously Season 4 ending was better ) but my little problem with season 4 is the middle , I found moments in a few episodes really dragged out...

There is almost no logical way the podcast girl doesn’t know Dexter if she covered the trinity killer AND the bay harbor butcher.

Personally I think the show was at it's best in Season 1. I love the cat and mouse game between Dexter and the Ice Truck Killer. It's such a perfect, tight season with nothing wasted. The last shot of the season is so perfect it honestly could have just been a miniseries and I would have been satisfied. Season 4 was good but the subplots were horrific and detracted from the season as a whole. The laguerta/angel romance stuff is appalling and obnoxious. It takes up way too much screen time and is one of the most forced relationships I've maybe ever seen. Every season after Season 1 has some terrible sideplots or annoying characters (Lila almost ruins season 2 for me). And Dexter in Season 1 is the only time in the series where he feels true to the character and not more and more human like they ended up making him. 1. Season 1 2. Season 2 3. Season 4 4. SEASON 8: I mean i agree with all of that. SEASON 6: I mean i agree with all of that BUT, you have to admin the Brian comeback even if for just one episode (o 2 i guess) was MINDBLOWING. NEW BLOOD: Haven't watched, didn't watch your review, not gonna spoil it. SEASON 7: TBH hard carried by Sirko. But even then the end of the arc was disappointing. Sirko death was very emotional, but the fact that it just end there, Dexter doesn't even try to avenge him, and George randomly die in 2 seconds was a disappointing ending for one of the best arc of the series. And yes, anything other than Sirko kinda sucked that season. SEASON 3: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, season 3 is one of my favourite, but i agree the skinner was very mid as a villain. But the Miguel arc was amazing to me, i'm sad things didn't work well in the end between him and Dexter but that was kinda the point, and why Harry told him he can't have friends who know his true self. SEASON 5: Bruh honestly i agree, season 5 is not peak Dexter but is a good season. Yeah Queen not questioning ANYTHING after Stan death was ridiculus but OTHER THAN THAT great plot, characters, vallain, it was a good season. SEASON 2: Nearly perfect, felt worse than what it actually is just because comes right after season 1, which in my opinion is way superior. SEASON 1: Peak Dexter. Really if i have to find something "bad" was maybe Laguerta being annyoing and an asshole with Debra... but like... an insignificant defect in an ocean of PERFECTION. And Brian is the best and perfect villain in the series, hands down. SEASON 4: Alright, hot take. I DON'T like season 4 AS MUCH as most people. For controversal reasons too, probabily. Dexter being a father and a family man was a great character development, yet it felt suffocating to me. Too many things to worry about, they handled it perfectly yet it felt better when Dexter was the dark lonely killer. they made a good character evolution but to me he was better during the first seasons. Trinity was a great villain, nothing to say about him. Also no Doakes. Sorry you can't be Dexter best season withouth Doakes, it's a new rule of the Harry code. My ranking Season 1 Season 2 Season 4 Season 3 Season 5 Season 7 Season 6 Season 8 Will soon watch New Blood. Overall agreed with like a good 80% and more of what you said.

My thing with New Blood. I could have ignored and looked past all the little things wrong until that last episode. New Blood had more to prove then any other season. And it dropped the ball. That alone makes it the worst for me.

Some of my favorite seasons ranked might be a surprise, while others fall in line with popular opinion. 9. 8 (no surprise) 8. 6 (pretentious) 7. 2 (can't stand Miss Pardon My Tits, Doakes becomes a little too much) 6. 3 (anticlimactic; Rita's more annoying than ever; still highly enjoyable though; Miguel good adversary) 5. 5 (love Lumen storyline; bad guys adequate but could've been better) 4. 7 (love Sirko and Minotaur subplots; Hannah subplot adequate) 3. 9 (surprise motherf'ers!- I'm probably the only one out there that really appreciated this season including the ending- the only fault I saw was pacing which was pretty bad and Harrison was an annoying lil' tw*t) 2. 4 (what else is new? Trinity Killer) 1. 1 (we meet all the cast with virgin eyes and learn everything afresh; storyline the best and most solid of all seasons) Season 9 New Blood hate- Look, I get it. I love Dexter, too. Did I want to see him move on to the next season? Of course. But once he was identified and pretty much left to 3 options: run, get caught, or die, I think dying might have been the kindest, most dignified exit for him. Could this show have lasted another season? It could have been stretched out, but what we would have seen was a cyclone style decline of someone we have loved for so long. Maybe more than the character, WE were spared that.

Sean, This Is One Of Those Wonderful Exciting Moments For Me When We're In Complete Agreement!!! =D I Haven't Seen Season 9 Yet So I Skipped All That, But This Was Literally My Exact Ranking For The Seasons As Well. Season 8 Is Absolute Crap Season 6 Has Interesting Ideas But Poor Execution. I Was Torn Between Seasons 7 & 3 Cause One Comes Off A Dark Revelation But Drops The Ball A Lot, The Other Feels Like The CLassic Style, But Not A Major Part Of The Story All Together. Season 5 Was A Fantastic Follow Up To "THE SEASON" End I To This Day Feel This Would Be The Ideal Cut-Off Point For Anyone Looking To End On An Endable High Note. Not To Mention The Kills Of This Season Serve Purpose, It's Not To Satisfy A Dark Desire, But To Remove A Dark Cloud And Allow Someone To Heal From Trauma. Season 2 Is A Fantastic Thriller Of Anticipation Waiting To See How Dexter Will Survive All The Pressure & Trouble. Season 1 Is The Only Season Of The Original 8 Where I Didn't Get Spoiled On Anything, And The Surprise Is Fantastic! Authentic Miami Style, Great Opening, With Prey You Absolutely Want To See Get What They Deserve. I Read The First Chapter Of That Book And Was Sucked Into A Whirlwind That I Couldn't Stop Reading Until I Had To. Season 4 Is Known As "THE SEASON" For A Reason. The Greatest Story Of All, The Best Villain, The Most Tragic Ending That Is Perfect. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!! Thank You For One Of My Favorite Rankings Of All Times. If I Ever Doing A Ranking Video One Day, I Hope You Won't Get Upset When My Order Is Basically The Same As Yours. Again, I'm Back & Forth Between 7 & 3, But Now I'm Leaning A Little More The Way You Had It.

New blood finale was truly awful. So depressing, so disrespectful to the legacy of the true heart behind Dexter

New Blood was horrible in every episode except the pilot.
