DeWalt vs Granite! DCH133, DCH263 runtime tests (cordless SDS rotary hammers)

Can an 18V SDS rotary hammer drill rock? Yeah mate where you been? And here we see how much the DeWalt DCH133 and DCH263 can do in granite with one 5Ah battery. 12x70mm holes were drilled until they couldn’t drill any more, using Detroit 12mm 4-cutter bits. I also discuss how fast they drill, how hot they get, and some other stuff.
Let’s knock some sand out!

Delighted with your review - many thanks! - I have the DC133 which I have always been amazed at how good it is for the money, but I saw the DCH 263 today and Googled the 3 Joules impact and was sorely tempted to upgrade, your review has saved me from a little disappointment! Also a a good tip with the battery discharging issue - I will keep my eye on it - many thanks again - PC

This was very informative, most videos just talk about drilling into concrete like you say. I recently purchased Starlink and need to mount it on my granite cottage, so have been researching drilling into Granite and not getting very far. I was already looking at Dewalt SDS drills so glad I found this. Subscribed.👍

Very cool! Yes assuming you're mounting stuff with something like 12mm concrete anchors (any style really) you'll be able to do that no problemo with one of these tools. The only thing I'd suggest is don't bother trying to bolt your gear down with concrete screws into granite, use another style of bolt like sleeve/wedge bolts or some glue in studs

@@BoltahDownunder Thank you for the advice. I was thinking about using sleeve bolts, your video 'how to properly install sleeve anchor bolts' is another excellent video. It's so much better seeing this is action rather than reading about it on a forum etc. Anyway, pretty confident in tackling this now🙂

Oh cool, I'm glad it helped! I think that sleeve anchor video had a part about the distance from the edges which is important for climbing bolts but not so much for installations like yours, so good news you shouldn't have to worry about that very much

The DCH133 will dramatically reduce power for a moment at the end to let you know it's battery is done. You can let go of the trigger and then squeeze it again... But this would wear on the battery or potentially damage it if you continue.

I'm also a climber and a rope access technician. And i have both drils ,plus many other Dewalt tools.. The 133 is ligher and i can handle it better with one hand, the 263 is heavier and i use it mostly for bigger holes. For the money,i think 133 is the better choice ,for general use.

You sound like a smart guy with good taste in rotary hammers and hobbies! Regarding using the D-handles one handed, do you find they're better than other style drills? Like they get better reach but are less balanced?

@@BoltahDownunder Thanks for the compliments 😊 I don't find them less balanced with an 5 ah battery, and yes they have better reach. Also ,compared with the other hammers in Dewalt's range (273,283) ,the D handle models are more powerful, weigh less and they're cheaper. The one that is more powerful is the Flexvolt Dch 333,but it's big, heavy and costs way more...i personally don't need it.

I also got sent here via Reddit, r/Dewalt, where you even commented. The DCH263 is on a killer special at the moment here, and I like the idea of having the chisel function, even though I don't need it at the moment (current use will be for anchors in concrete to hold new wooden fence posts). On special, it's also cheaper than the DCH133, so seems like the clear winner. However, how does the DCH263 stack up against the "Green Milwaukee" RSDS18X you've also reviewed? With the special available, it's about $30 cheaper for the Ryobi in Kiwi money. I've already got both batteries, so no issue there, including a 6Ah HP Ryobi battery. Doing the math as you did, the DCH263 should be slightly faster than the Ryobi (but only by a hair). The DCH263 does have slightly higher max drilling capacity in concrete at 28mm vs 26mm, but I don't think that will be a factor for what I'll be doing. So other than the form factor, I don't see a massive difference, but since it's the first SDS rotary I'd be buying, I could be missing something obvious.

  • @BoltahDownunder

G'day from the west island! Hope you're keeping well with all this shit going on. Personally I'd take the dewalt. The Ryobi is surprisingly good but not as good as the dch263. The dewalt drills faster, hits harder and has more torque, and is rated 28mm rather than 26. The only thing is it's not as accurate for small holes due to the high impact so if you're doing lots of like 6mm drilling consider getting the smaller hammer, or just start the holes off slow. Keep us posted!

Hi there, great vid, ok I'm thinking of getting one of these as I'm already invested in DeWalt's cordless drill/drivers etc and batteries, my current bosh sds is only 1.7 j so its quite weak and has struggled on a few occasions, and i tried some 3 j Parkside (european/lidl cheap brands) but they just blow, and have common defects... so my question is which one should i get? the price isn't a factor here, and i wont be using it daily, mainly home/diy.... is the anti vibration a big kicker? the power/time ratio seems to be even as you said 1 hits harder but the other drills faster... i just don't really know which one to get, if you were to choose either, which one would be? sorry and thanks :D

I work as an electrician. I drill a lot of holes. I'm looking for an 18V drill but with a dust collector. Can I buy a vacuum cleaner for the DCH133? The DCH263 is definitely the D25303DH-XJ vacuum cleaner. If you had a choice between DCH133, DCH263, DCH273 or Makita DHR242 which one would you choose?

  • @BoltahDownunder

Depends on how big the holes are! If they're mostly say 12mm or less I'd get a smaller drill personally, like the dch172 or DHR 182. But really all of the above would be fine. If drilling overhead a lot, look at the compacts, if bigger holes or more speed is more important than weight, then any of the drills you mentioned would be great. And I don't know anything about the vacuums, sorry

Seeing whereas you’re a climber you should look in to their new power stack batteries(not the slim pack). You can get the same power and possibly runtime with the 2ah powerstack pouch cell battery’s than with the “regular” Dewalt 5ah.

I use a fresh bit for every test, so it only needs to last for this one thing. But in general no I don't think brittleness is a problem with carbide tipped concrete bits like this. They didn't get as hot as metal drilling bits because there's less friction. They hammer to cut the material, not scrape. If they do get too hot then they break at the brazing and the carbide tip breaks off, or the carbide softens and wears down faster

Hammer drills rotate faster than SDS drills, and also don't really hammer much so they get way more friction. I think they tend to cook bits pretty fast compared to SDS. But in general if your bits changed color, like going blue or black, it's cooked and won't last much longer
