At last we've conquered (or at least mostly) the Dewalt DWS779 and DWS780 double bevel compound sliding miter saw dust collection. Many have tried but I really do think this is the best balance of improvement and maintaining full functionality. If you're looking for ways to control the dust in your shop or job site - I think you'll like it!

Hey Travis, I’ve been a silent bystander to your videos, but a long time subscriber. The way you explain things is more than excellent for hobbyist woodworkers/shop nation folks like me. I remember one of your early videos about the WEN air filter. It was early on, but it made me feel like a human being, if that makes sense. The way you’re so honest and transparent about your content is so refreshing. You’re videos are some serious motivation to me and my shop, and I will always support your 3D printed doo dads and gizmos that makes our lives easier. Thanks Travis, keep in keeping on!

YOU ARE THE MAN!!! I just spent 2 hours watching YT videos trying to figure out how to solve my miter saws dusting issues. Imagine my excitement when I got the end of THIS video and realized you started to mention Hercules miter saws from Harbor Freight. I literally RAN to check my model number and felt like a kid on Christmas morning again when the model numbers matched!! I just ordered TWO units for the HE74! Now I'll be watching the camera's for delivery notifications daily to unwrap this present. Literally made my day / week / month / year!!!! THANK YOU for all the efforts you put into this! So worth it! You have no idea how many projects I've delayed because of the miter saw dust mess I knew would come with them. Cannot thank you enough!!!

I bought your dust collection chute for my DWS779 and it really works. I had to modify it so my LS4000 blade would fit. I used a rasp to open the left side of the chute 5 degrees. The blade ($258) is so rigid it will not ease past your opening, bit as modified it collects the dust. Also added the MM Tools LED shadow light and Fastcap's zero clearance tape. Effectively I've got a DWS780 and saved $200. Keep up your efforts at fixing problems.

OK so I rarely if ever comment or come back to a site to leave a review but the dust collection device Shop Nation came up with has left me no choice but to leave this review. My Dewalt DW780 with the factory designed dust collection device might just as well of not had any dust collection device at all. After cutting any amount of wood, even a single 2x4 resulted in a pile of dust on the machine, the floor, on me and everywhere else it wanted to go. I had wood dust stuck to the wall behind my saw and caused me to do vacuuming and clean up every time I used my saw. I watched this video and thought it was worth a try as Travis seemed to have put a lot of work into his design. I purchased the device from Shop Nation and from the unpackaging to install was nothing but extremely impressed. The quality of the 3D print is excellent. The mount up to my saw was spot on. I hooked it up to my dust collection system via a 4" to 2.5" reducer and I purchased the appropriate accessory's from Shop Nation. I am so happy with this device! Works amazing!

Update to previous comments. After using this device for a few months, I am reporting that it has become a game changer for dust collection on my DW780. I do get a small amount of dust but it is absolutely no comparison to the disaster I used to have. Additionally, I had an issue with a small chunk of the plastic crack off where the rubber shoot attaches to the plastic. I sent Travis some pictures of the broken area and within a couple of days a new one showed up in the mail. Hats off to Travis and Shop Nation. Can't say enough good to properly describe how happy I am with the product and the way this company responds to customer concerns. Buy one of these devices and get back to loving your Dewalt mitre saw!

Super job as usual Travis. I would love to see the Hercules 12” comparison. Are you using the Ridgid miter saw in your shop? I’ve been leaning towards the 12” Bosch Axial Glide, but it almost seems to be 6 of one half dozen of another when compared to others. I know Festool is supposed to be the best, but I’m not going to spend that being a diy guy. I just want to get as close as possible to “perfect” as possible. Since it’s designed and built by human hands, there really is no such thing. Just a saw that stays in alignment as it should. I’ve heard pros & cons on the Hercules, but will wait for your input. See you in the next installment.

Looks good! I have one of these saws and the dust collection is a real nuisance. The inefficiency is one thing, the blasted hose coming out the dead back of it is the real headache. An already deep saw gets even deeper when you hook up the dust collection. Then the hose gets in the way when trying to swing the saw for various cuts. I will be picking one of these up in the near future. Will probably wait until this fall. I don't do many wood working projects during the summer, spend my time doing yard projects.

I’ve been using this for about a week, and seeing the results in person have been jaw dropping. Installation was a breeze and I can’t recommend it enough. I used to avoid using my miter saw at all in my garage shop and now I don’t mind at all.

I’d love to see that Dewalt/Hercules comparison video. My go to power tool brand is Dewalt since I have a dozen or so batteries and have been pretty happy with their products. I’m thinking of upgrading from my old 10” non-sliding Dewalt miter saw so if the Hercules saw is just as good I’d love it. This will live in my shop so no need for a battery option. Interestingly though my current Dewalt miter saw has amazing dust collection. Probably because it doesn’t have to slide though haha

I'm excited! I can't remember the model number of the dewalt saw that I have but I believe it's a older model. I had played around with making a shroud and other improvements that I'm capable of. They didn't work well so I just opted for making my mitre station easy to clean. I did so by making a 12"×7" funnel port at the rear base of the saw (hooked up to my dust collection system). So I think this design would pair perfectly with my setup.

Say what you want about harbor freight tools but I have the hercules table saw and it works great and has a great price point. Thanks for the video.

With the number of miter saws you now have, you should make a comparison video showing which has the best dust collection, both before as stock and after your modifications. Weigh the amount collected after a lot of cuts, perhaps by measuring the full weight of a bucket/filter system.

    A. I am impressed. B. I like your approach. C. Have you thought about using bellows or folding vinyl skirting on the sides? This could be silicone sheets too.

I respect your dedication to a project. You significantly improved this. However, my biggest thanks is for making it clear that this is not a great saw for a shop.

Great job Travis! A lot of work, so from all us thanks. Could you look at the Makita saws specifically the LS1219L. It would be interesting once you get done with the most popular saws in a review of which saw does the best with your dust chutes installed.

I have the Dewalt 12" slider, and took delivery of your replacement dust collector. Haven't had enough time to even install it.... Would love to see a comparison between the Dewalt and the HF version. It'll either make me glad I spent the money for the Dewalt, or embarrass the snot out of me for spending that much money..... Excellent work Travis, love your channel!!

Woo hoo! The dust collection on my DW780 is so bad I just don't even bother hooking up a shop vac and just blow the dust into a corner and clean it up later. This will make a HUGE difference!

Here’s the rub: how does it work without the vacuum i.e. with a dust bag? Working on jobsites, we can’t always have a vacuum running along with a saw because we’ll pop a breaker. Instead, we use the dust bags that come with the saw and it significantly cuts down on sawdust spraying out the back.

Dewalt has a cordless shop vac if you are already in their line. I would highly recommend that over the dust bag.

As fellow former mechanical engineers, we appreciate your attention to detail and design skills! Our saw is the Makita LS1019L - looks like you have the 12" version of this saw covered, any plans for the 10"?

Gotta say, that's a significant improvement. Also, you should do a series on F360 modeling. Your workflows etc. You know...because you have so much time on your hands now! 😁
