    For info you CAN get them off using the hex key and hammer method. Mines a DCD796. When the chuck is off the stem looks just the same as any stem. It seems all they have done is missed out the counter-clockwise screw. There's a hole in the top of the stem (which is what you see when you look down the chuck) but it isn't threaded. They have used thread lock on the stem thread, loctite or something similar, which is why it takes a good whack to get it off. Seems a rather penny-pinching and potentially dangerous method of putting chucks on! Effectively they are just glued on. I've taken a couple of photos but I can't download them on here.

    Would a bit of heat from a soldering iron release the threadlock, or is there plastic in the area?

    You can get the chuck off but it did involve taking the drill apart for me. Once apart you punch the shaft out through the gearbox. You can then unscrew the chuck from the arbour. It's not pinned on but its VERY tight. I used an 8mm Allen key in the chuck. Held the shaft in the vice and used an exstention bar on the Allen key to break it loose. The gear box is full of gears so be very careful. I did this yesterday on the 996. I think there is a chance you can do it without taking apart but you risk damaging the gearbox.

    I am buying a gift and comparing the dcd777D1 at $99 or the dcd796 for $95. Both are 20v, but I see the 796 is also a hammer drill. I don't know that much about drills, They are nearly identical in price. I assume the hammer drill can be used like a regular drill also? Which would you purchase?

    I recently bought the DCD996 and must say that Dewalt is being a bit tricky. You see a lot of reviews where they use the 'Proudly made in the USA' version, simply because a lot of review sites are American. But if you buy it in Europe, it is Made in China. The charger that comes with it: Made in PRC. Bought the DCV584 vacuum as well. And sure enough, that too is Made in PRC. Shouldn't be too surprised looking in hindsight, since Dewalt is a Stanley Black & Decker brand who make an awful lot of stuff in PRC (which is tantamount to modern slavery). Now, I'm not terribly worried about the chuck needing to be replaced. I'm not a pro using this as a daily driver. But it does leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, and I don't think there will be more Dewalt tools coming in soon. I've also got a Worx collection (Positec), and those are actually quite good for DIY stuff. And Positec seems to be an OK company with modern facilities and some interesting innovations. I'm not a believer that you have to stick with just one system. We're already monogamous with marriage, no need to be locked in with a tool manufacturing company in the same way...

    The tricky bit is how a country defines what counts as "made in USA". As I believe its 'Proudly made in the USA with global materials'. This just means its assembled their, which may offer a tax break or allow them to use the USA slogan. Its not uncommon. As for the Chuck thing, you end up with a better product. The price you pay is its a little more involved to remove the chuck, but you can, and get replacements.

    After a very short google search, I've found that you would just remove these chucks the same way as you do after removing the centre screw. The pin is just a blank.

    Instead of buying expensive long bit sets just buy a torx screwdriver. It is also long enough to reach that elusive screw and costs about £4! Job done.

    I myself removed the chuck from these drills you are talking about. You are giving wrong information. I had to use a hex socket attachment and a breaker bar. They are screwed in REALLY tight

  • 4 жыл бұрын

    @cesar arias what? :)

  • 4 жыл бұрын

    @cesar arias as far as I know there is none but it is not complicated. It is just hard. You need the right tools. A 1/4 soket attachment with hex tip and a long breaker bar. A second person to help or a big vice to hold the drill. It feels like the drill will break apart. It is that hard to remove. You can try heating the chuck to soften the thread locking compound.

    Daaang... There is no way i buy a drill that i can not replace the chuck in the future without hassle. In my experience that's the first thing (if you are lucky) what you had to replace. It does not mean the drill is bad, but i consider the chuck as separable part, an accessory of the drill. And in this way i want to be able to replace it by myself when ever i want. I admit am a DeWalt fun, but i am disappointed now. Its not the path that DeWalt follow it many many years. And actually those drill prices are not cheap. Not super expensive, but not cheap.

    Thanks for the video. I recently bought a bargain (I think)- the Milwaukee M18BLPD2 with 2 5ah batteries and a charger for £160 all-in delivered and that's got instructions to remove the chuck. Hopefully by the time it needs replacing it'll be worth just buying a brand new drill anyway because if it was playing up I wouldn't know if there's any other cause or additional problem.

    Hi I know its a bit late in posting but I hope you can respond. I have a Dewalt dcd796 and the collar (the one that needs turning to select hammer or rotary) is becoming really stiff. Would you know whats causing this ? I can still turn it but its often a struggle; I use this drill almost daily for work, the warranty expired last year !

    Anything XR Brushless is the best you can have. I currently run the 887 impact. Amazing little thing. Also the DCF 796. Instead of owning a driver and a hammer I just have the hammer. XR grinder is a beauty. Avoid buying the massive $500 packs of tools. They're all the watered down versions of them. Never buy Atomic.

    Alecs, the dcd998 and dcd999 are great hammer drills. If you’re looking for regular drill with decent power, the dcd800 is good, and not much heavier than the atomic.

    Thats me. Tried using an M8 driver in my drill in low gear to remove a bolt 4 metres up. 796 flew out of my hand up in the air and fell onto concrete floor. Battery came off drill bounced hit a steel rail track and skidded across the factory floor. No damage to drill or battery amazing.... but then i discovered a dent in the chuck which prevents it opening and closing properly. Tried all the internet tricks to shock it off. No joy though it did loosen out the damage a bit. So I just went and bought another 796. Doh.

    There's nothing wrong with the drill on the performance side. It's the maintenance area that will catch you out. So if you do get it it, just take care of it and when it does break down make sure you get the money's worth for it's lifespan.
