DEWALT DCCS620P1 20V Compact 12" Chainsaw Review

Price the DEWALT 20V Compact Chainsaw on Amazon: amzn.to/2i2dwFW
DEWALT has been trickling outdoor power tools into their 20-volt line over the last year or so. They currently have a 20-volt string trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer and have now added the new DCCS620 12" Compact Brushless Chainsaw. The new 12" Chainsaw has many of the other features you find on the larger 40-volt or FlexVolt chainsaws, such as tool-free chain tensioning, brushless motors, fixed-rate automatic chain oilers and an Oregon bar and chain. One item that it is missing is a variable speed trigger. The 20-volt model has a single speed trigger that allows the chain to run at 25.2 feet per second when the trigger is pulled.
So let's get right to the question that is on everyone's mind. Can DEWALT's 20-volt max battery properly power a chainsaw? The answer is a surprising YES, it can power it and the battery and brushless motor combination do quite well at it. This top handle compact chainsaw is not going to be a go-to saw for felling trees, but it will do well at limbing, trimming and also cutting dry lumber on the jobsite. The saw was surprisingly resilient through our test cutting up a pine tree we dropped a few days before and we did not have any thermal timeouts or overloads. For a saw of this size and voltage, it really did well.
DCCS620 Features
Low Kick Back 12" Oregon Bar and Chain
Compact, lightweight design (8.8 lbs)
High-efficiency brushless motor
Tool-Free chain tensioning and bar tightening knob
Build Quality
When you look at all the battery operated chainsaws from DEWALT, you will see some items that look the same. The chain tensioner is most likely a shared item between all three of their battery saws on the market. One would also think that the chain oil fill cap would be also, but that item on this saw feels a bit weak. We will say that the cap flexes less once there is oil lubricating its movement, but either way, the cap gives the saw a feeling that one should take care in adjusting it.
Other than the cap, the feeling of the saw is pretty good. One would wish they would have carried over the variable speed trigger, but the motor used might not have the torque to run at lower RPMs.
Any way that you look at this saw, it is a perfect match for a homeowner who wants to be able to trim trees and possibly clean up a mess after a storm. Hunters would love the saw for cleaning out areas in the woods! Contractors who deal with pole structures might enjoy it for trimming 4x4's or other rough cut items. This saw does have a large group that will enjoy using the saw!

I have a nice gas saw, but I bought this because the number of times I need to cut up a tree is pretty small but the number of times I need to prune limbs is huge and a big heavy gas saw with all the power just is too tiring for that job. This thing is super light and is going to work great for that

Thank you very much. I’m ordering mine as soon as I’m done typing this. I too already have a bunch of yellow batteries and gas saws in many sizes but wanted to see an opinion from someone else before buying one. Sometimes the job sight (apartment maintenance) needs a little more saw than the reciprocator, but I don’t want to always haul gas, oil, and saw plus all the other gear for it. But, one more black and yellow tool for the bag. Why not?

i love this little saw. i use it camping on state land. so quiet . you can use it when everyone is sleeping . two 4 ah batteries lasted for the weekend. plenty of wood with leftover. also if you need a little more reach, up grade with a oregon S52 , 14in bar and chain.

I used this to cut down my moms tree. F*****g awesome saw. It lasted on one battery, couldnt believe it. Caution though. When you first use it it will drip quite a bit of oil being clean and new. After awhile use it built up with wood debris and the oil barely dripped out. Its an awesome saw, best investment Ive made in awhile. BADASS SAW

I just bought this saw 2 hours ago. I like everything about it except the oil cap did snap off the first time I opened it. was very tight. now I need pliers to open it. And of course now it has oil in it, it opens easily and probably wouldn't snap off. DeWalt should ship with oil cap loose and instructions to twist on after filling with oil.

@@WorkshopAddict I know that but I can afford to perform an autopsy and void the warranty since it paid for itself. I don't want a replacement piece of shit with the same sad controller which either died due to pathetically few fins on the heat sink or because they used shit control components. The Makita I replaced it with is a better saw but the bar is crap so the DeWalt's bar now lives on the Makita. If the Makita craps out I'll use the batteries elsewhere then dissect it too.

Brian, I've had my DeWalt 620 two years and use it for limbing work in my aerial lift in my tree service work. I need to flip the drive sprocket, held in place by a 10mm/ 3/8" bolt. I can't find a stop hole or brake for the sprocket unless its the handle brake. Your thoughts?

  • @shermananderson700

    @shermananderson700

    2 жыл бұрын

I am answering my own question. The 10mm (3/8”) bolt is left-threaded. I used Vise-Grip needle nose to grip the sprocket. I removed the six Torx screws of the black plastic plate to get to the one-piece drum sprocket. The sprocket thus cannot be flipped to extend use. I will Google the parts list and order the replacement drum sprocket as a backup.

Accuracy if good enough for cutting poles down on a pole structure, but that is about it. Just an opinion here, but Milwaukee wants to play with the big dogs. So Milwaukee would want to compete with the FlexVolt line or the Makita 18X2 line. This Dewalt saw does not compete with those units, and I bet Milwaukee is working to perfect it. Who knows. Milwaukee also owes everyone a top of the line rear handle circular saw as Dewalt and Makita have taken the #1 and #2 spots.

Good review but I have a question for viewers. I have several Dewalt chainsaws and have had two of them just quit. My 40V Dewalt quit some time ago. Just stopped cutting one time and now when you press the trigger it just clicks. Just now had the same thing on my second 20V Max chainsaw. Cutting a small log and it just quit. And I am fully aware of the chain brake and this was not the problem. However, on BOTH my 60V Flexvolt Dewalt chain saws I now have to zip-tie the chain brake to the handle because the chain brake just won't hold. I know the danger with this but I have become very good at sensing kickback and avoid it well. I really like all my Dewalt chain saws but these issues were annoying. Thanks for any feedback.

He shows how to remove the chain and housing but not how to put it back. There's only one way to do that and I tried every other way before I finally figured it out. If you show how to take something apart, show how to reassemble the damn thing.

You reassemble it in the reverse order. That is the universal way of reassembling anything. Ever.

Always Wrenching My first impression of my saw bought in March 2020 with a spare 5 ah battery was the ABS material is to thin or flimsy and won’t last. I was wrong. I am a professional arborist since 1991. I own and operate a tree service doing mostly domestic work. We did a large property makeover in June and the saw showed it’s true colors of DeWalt quality. In August the motor began quitting when under the slightest pressure. I cleaned the bar grooves with a Stens bar cleaning tool, changed chain and cleaned the three vents by the motor with air pressure. That simple maintenance solved the issue. If the motor quits again I’ll put it on my bench to open the motor for deeper cleaning. My Stihl and Echo gas saws get cleaned after every work day and we seldom have breakdowns other than chain changes. I carry spare chains and small parts in a Husky 22” Tool Box. That’s all folks!

Why would you buy that? something that size I'm sure you can use a cordless sawzall with a Long Blade just as easily and a Sawzall be much more versatile tool

For many people, yes, but for a hunter or a person who will limb or clean up a significant amount of branches, this saw would be 500% faster than a sawzall.

Sohrab Kaviani The saw is quiet so the helmet is not so essential for ground work and de-limbing. I am pro-PPE so I always wear my helmet. With this saw I like the quiet!

Ok, so this is a great saw. And the battery life is unreal. But I am looking at the Iranian female soccer fans for the world cup 2018. So, uh.... no idea what's going on here. They should be allowed to celebrate their countries games without restrictions.
