Nice to see a dev criticise their past projects, often I find they dare not bad mouth the game at all, as not instill some bad will towards a company or not to upset fans

My favorite 3D platformer, hands down. Fluid controls and animation, decent variety without feeling gimmicky, and, probably because of the little ways the levels connected to each other, and the fact that some areas are hinted at but never seen, the game world had a sense of verisimilitude.

I've always loved the little touches in Jak and Daxter games, like the vast variety of animation (Jak's hair bending when swimming, Daxter's speeches after dying etc.). Yet I've never understood how difficult these kind of things can be to make. Nowadays you laugh if you see a big budget game where the character's appearance does not change when standing under a waterfall. This kind of insight on how games are/were made is awesome, and it makes me want to know more. Thank you :)

Just because a game is stylized doesn't mean everything else is watered down. To me, stylized characters offer more in the way of animation, which leads to stronger scenes compared to the stiffer realistic character. As such, you can play up emotional moments in scenes since the character your using is a lot more versatile.

Naughty Dog games have really come a long way but I'd love them to do something more cartoony again as well: Jak&Dexter was an amazing series and you can do very complex and cinematic stories/gameplays in a cartoony setting too. Instead of going for perfect visual realism, use all that power to go for something that simply looks cool.

Really cool comments from Jason this episode. Interesting to hear how some of his feelings of the game are different to the consumer based on his behind-the-scenes knowledge of the development. The Jak design in particular, I actually thought was striking and evolved well over the course of the series, but I can absolutely understand Jason's frustrations feeling like he was 'designed by committee'. You can't fault the green eyebrows, though!

Story wise and character wise Jak 2 was a lot better it's true. But gameplay wise it lost its identity, who wants to trudge through that boring gray city, it's a kid's version of GTA 3 but even more boring. Platforming is a great genre and it's where the series finds its true charm. Should have stuck to that instead of trying to be something else.

Insane how well this game even Crash 2 and 3 still hold up today, not the remakes but the originals, they still play perfectly fine and the graphics still look charming and appealing, especially Jak & Daxter, just look how gorgeous that game looks still today, I was mindblown by it when it came out, and many other games of that era like Devil May Cry who still hold up so damn fine. This happens when your game is well crafted like these, unfortunately that doesn't happen anymore and they rather release a unfinished game to patch it later.

I did that about three years ago! I picked it up one day and decided to replay it for the kicks. I was just really nostalgic for Geyser Rock and Sentinel Beach. Four or so hours later I had beat it 100%. I was really surprised, as a kid this game was pretty challenging, and I only ever beat it once (mostly because I liked the early levels so much). I had no anticipation of beating it 100%, especially in such a short amount of time. The world record 100% speedrun is 1hr 38min though, so we have a long way to go, haha

Rc3651 I was in the same situation, I at first didn't even want to play it til 100% and it just happened :P (I assume this World Record is with glitches and stuff right? I wonder what the record would be without using skipping bugs. When just straight forward try to beat the game normally, you then play just in a hurry I mean. And will probably have to start over when you missed something important)

  • @Rc3651

DoctorOnjen No, it was in the 100% category, so it was a straight run-through collecting every item. They must have a really optimized route planned out! The Any% category, which allows skips, brings it down to 24m46s. The Any% No Major Skips category is at 1hr03m, so apparently getting every collectible doesn't take that much longer than just beating the game, haha

For me it's the insightful let's plays that are most interesting. This series I totally learn a lot about the development of the game which is what draws me to it. If it's a game I'm really interested in watching someone else play it would be something I might do later, but I'd absolutely want to play it for myself first and foremost so I could compare how they played it or their opinions of the game. It's also fun to watch really awful games in let's plays so you don't have to make the investment. Although I do know a lot of people who just watch streams and let's plays and never actually play games themselves. That's just baffling to me.

I loved this series. They did 3D-platforming better than anyone (prior to Super Mario Galaxy at least). It's so weird that so little has changed in this genre that it is still possible to enjoy these older games. Maybe they just got everything right the first time around, but I'd like to think that there is more to be done in this genre.

The only platform games I had played before this were the crash bandicoot games on ps1 which were straightforward you complete a stage and move on. This whole open world concept was I guess to much for me as a 7 year old lol. I remember going over my dads house and he had the game and would be way farther in the game then I ever got and I'd just be like how did you get here? Despite owning the game and not completing it I have fond childhood memories of it ironically.

Wow, I had to subscribe the moment I realized Jason Rubin was doing something like this in modern times. Interesting bit about the "kicking Daxter" mechanic being a thing and then scrapped. Didn't fucking know that. I love my father and all, but I wish Jason Rubin was also my father. To have a father who made my favorite video game series would be like, heaven? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS JASON RUBIN. Jak and Daxter (Jak) is my favorite video game series, while the 3rd game installment, Jak 3, is my favorite. The first game appears to get the most love in the series, but im one of the fans who prefers Jak 3 over the rest. It's not just my favorite game in the trilogy (and of all time), I also only believe its the best in the trilogy. And Jak is also my favorite character of all time. This was incredibly, unbelievable enjoyable to watch and I had a lot of fun and smiled nearly throughout the whole video. I also learned quite several more things. Jak II and Jak 3 especially are going to be even better though. I look forward to hearing about some of the technical programming with Jak II and then possibly some light on the relation with Mar and Jak in Jak 3 ;). Another jak and daxter game NEEDS to be made. It can be so much better now too with the newer hardware. But it has to be like this game, maybe not so much 2 or 3 because they aren't really hardcore action platformers like the first game. Plus, there's now a brand new generation of 3D platformers coming like Yooka Laylee (but maybe something a little bit more polished xD)

Didn't Insomniac invent Level Of Detail? They weren't afraid to show the player a bit of loading here and there. In Spyro and Ratchet games you could see textures loading if one is attentive enough.

Since Jason is a big-wig over at Oculus now, is he going to hook Tim up with his own CV1 so he can play *Lucky's Tale*? That could make for a good Devs Play episode, actually. Tim playing the game while a developer talks to him, other members of the Double Fine staff sneaking in to make faces at Tim while he's blindfolded, maybe even recreate the infamous circle-of-asses photo..

Not only should we have a Psychonauts 2 and Jak & Daxter 4, we should also have remakes of the first games! Remakes don't work in the movie industry ( none that I can think of anyway ) but work brilliantly in games --- I don't understand why there aren't more!

I'm not sure how I feel on his thoughts on Jak's character design. Like sure, he's a bit more interesting of a character in Jak 2 and 3, definitely closer to Daxter's level, but Jak's design in the first game is at least serviceable, very much memorable and far better at immersion than Jak 2 and 3. Plus, if nothing else, he's way more expressive than nearly any mute character I've ever seen in a video game. In fact, mute characters can work really well. Link is mute and he's still a very interesting character, probably the most interesting in either Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess. I think the problem is that Jak could actually be even more interesting without Daxter which does sound like sacrilege but the thing is that Jak can't really be more expressive than he is when Daxter is taking up most of the screen time. Admittedly removing Daxter would make interactions with other characters very difficult, but I feel like Naughty Dog was somewhat capable of it because I feel like Jak's dynamic with Daxter is actually the best in the first game. He did interact better with other characters in Jak 2 and 3, but again, Daxter is taking up most of the interactions in the first game not giving Jak much of a chance to interact with other characters. Jak 2 and 3 kind of has the opposite problem where he interacts well with other characters but not really all that much with his main side-kick. While there definitely could be some kind of improvement to his character design in the first game, I really don't think anything he did when designing him was really something I would consider a mistake. Plus, while Daxter may be a tiny bit of a hindrance to Jak, I don't think I would really consider him a mistake either. I think he was a perfectly reasonable solution to the mute character problem, it just wasn't executed all that well.

For nostalgia purposes maybe? They show shots of the systems and they are the classics I believe. I think they want to get the full, original experience. Show the game how it was when they were developing it.

WoW, 15 million dollars was the budget of this game. This just really paints the picture of how expensive is to develop games in USA. Witcher 3 development costed the same amount of money (in 2015 money it is even less than in 2000/2001) and look at how bigger this game is than Jak&Daxter. I'm not trying to make a point or anything, just thought that it is interesting.
