I met them at the Square pegs rap party back in the day as a friend of mine from university was lucky enough that his mother worked on the show.I remember saying wow you are Devo .They said no we are not.I then asked who are you. They then told me and I always remembered it.I then ran into them in a bar here in Whistler in 2010.My friend was the bar tender and when I came in she said hey come meet Devo.I said hi but you are not Devo but I know who you are. They said are sure we are Devo and i replied will you buy me a shot if I know exactly who you are .They said go ahead.Without missing a beat I told them what they had told me years ago that they are really 5 spud boys hovering above life's highway searching for bin sweet bin. They asked if I knew them from school and I said no we met at the square pegs rap party and they explained they were never meant to be a band just a school project and said that's who they really are not a band.Bartender gave us free shots all around.

Freese is truly one of the best in the business. If you're an alternative rock fan, you've undoubtedly heard him on tons of albums without even realizing it. He was one of the most prolific American session drummers between ~1992 and the late 2000s. Filled in for all sorts of bands on tour, too, not to mention his full-time membership in numerous groups including Devo. One of those underrated savants who quietly left his mark all over the industry.

A lot of us prog rockers loved new wave and post-punk and made the transition early on. The rock scene was going in a lot of different directions at once in the late 70s and we favored the more interesting and innovative music. The 80s were as musically influential as any other decade and bands like DEVO ushered it in in grand style. So, if your classmates mocked you, f*ck 'em, they're what AM radio was for.

Trivia: just prior to this performance, it was reported in the media that Devo was going to be "censored" in the sense that they couldn't have the background videos behind them showing on live TV. While it wasn't specified *what* was not allowed on TV, it's probably that "pumping gas" visual from "What We Do", among others. So I guess that's why there's no screen behind them this time.

I've said it before here, but this is rock brilliance. There is an unbelievable amount of musical tightness. When they venture into a funk beat, they just rip it up. The very next second, it's classic R&B and then, they end it on a banging rock vibe. And, this is live...

It's the same for me with players who turn their backs on the audience. Not the folks juking around having a good time, but the old jam monsters who would turn their backs on the crowd and play half the concert to the drummer. That's a f***ing no, too. Some would say it's the same with smoking on stage but that got blown out of the water long ago. One of my all-time favs was the late F.Zappa. He must have smoked more on stage than he did at home. But I should be clear: these folks, (Devo), were precedent setters and as good as they get. The utter balls to do what they did when they did it was incredible.

@@PaulYoungMinnesota There's a recording of that Minneapolis set that is completely mind-blowing. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend searching for it here on KZread - the audio quality is almost absurdly good for a tape of its era (I think it was recorded for a radio broadcast). And the performance itself? Absolutely out of this world.

Great footage of this show! I saw them in June or July 2010, right after Something For Everybody was released. Similar set list. Great mix of the new songs & classics. I just saw them in LA 9/25/21. They are truly one of the most unique & innovative bands ever. Love them since 1978. ❤

I wore out the Freedom of Choice album in 1980 at the expense of incessant ridicule from my older brother, who emphatically, yet ignorantly declared that it was not "real rock -n- roll." It was absolutely different, but still damn good "rock" music. Peculiar in it's heavy synth, and a departure from strictly guitar oriented music, albeit with flashes of sporadic heavy guitar riffs, yet incredibly tight and oddly melodious. I actually eventually sang in several hard rock/metal bands over the years, but always had a special fondness for this album.

Me too. I tried to get a ride up to Whistler but none of my friends who had cars wanted to make the trip. Was a hell of a bummer. Thankfully they came back to Vancouver a year or so down the road, to the Commodore (or maybe the Vogue... one of those Granville-adjacent venues, anyways). And thankfully the Whistler set was filmed so those of us who missed it can enjoy it vicariously a decade and a half later!
