----------
Canadian heavy music artist Devin Townsend has recently announced the release of his forthcoming new album ‘EMPATH’ for the 29th March 2019.
He also revealed that in the lead up to the album’s release, Devin will walk fans through how Empath came together with a series of documentary episodes recorded as phone conversations during the course of the albums recording.
Devin previously commented:
“Hello everybody, this is Devin Townsend and I would like to formally announce that after almost a year and a half of working, I have finished Empath. Now this record has taken me down a lot of very interesting psychological and technical avenues and the process was documented from the very get-go by a series of documentary videos that I have done, that outline everything from the gestation of the idea to the actualisation of it, through all the existential ups and downs that went on. As such this record is different to any record that I have released thus far, and trying to get people on board for what it is versus what it isn’t, I think needs to be dealt with in a different way. Stay tuned for the making of Empath - the video series.”
Over the past few years, the success that Devin has slowly worked for has fortunately come with the power to control his own creative destiny. The recent successes with the DVD from a sold-out Royal Albert hall, or his 2012 ‘Retinal Circus’, or last year’s ‘Ocean Machine’ live DVD with the Orchestra and Choir of State Opera Plovdiv has put him in a position where with the new album ‘EMPATH’, he will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification.
On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.
Joining Devin on this album is Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally as music director, as well as Morgan Ågren (Mats And Morgan, Frank Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal), Anup Sastry (Monuments, Periphery), Samus Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Abigail Williams), Nathan Navarro, Elliot Desagnes, Steve Vai, Chad Kroeger, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ché Aimee Dorval, Ryan Dhale and the Elektra Women’s Choir.
A bold statement with massive production values and dynamic, uncompromised musicality. This is a statement about not only pursuing creative freedom in a conservative scene, but also trying to show that heavy music is truly a valid musical tool.

I think that this idea is absolutely genius. Not a lot of artists show this much appreciation for the audience and also give a lense into how they make an album from the "gestation of the idea to the actualization of the product" as Devin has said. Very intrigued and excited to see this whole series and obviously the album.

Aaaaaa I found Devin too late in my life... I look forward to the new album and I can't believe I can't even attend the upcoming acoustic tour. I managed to get a ticket for the closest venue last week but I didn't realise a few weeks before it, my current band also has a gig. I was too excited for the event. Was devastated when I realised. I feel a little bit obliged to comment here after seeing that mister Townsend is allowing himself to show his vulnerable side and how I sense that the significance of his message might not be commonly understood. I have listened to all published albums under the name of Devin Townsend and dare to say I that have a sense of the process of self-actualization that he is refering to. I would like to emphasize the power of surrendering to subconcious incentives, which in Devin’s case have led to (in my opinion) the most astonishing music products of all time. The beauty of embodying his psychological transformations with these music albums, is that he allows anyone who listens openly to these pearls, to resonate with his path. Hereby, I think Devin’s discography reveals the influential strength of a single soul. It goes without saying that I am bursting with enthousiasm to hear his new album which will be another climax in the world of music.

Nice start! Devin you're obsessed understanding yourself but I think you simply are a creative being, like every human can be, so you just have to express yourself through art like you did until today. Art/Creativity flows like water from a fountain. This clash between black and white, Ziltoid and Devin reminds me bad and good Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. Lynch should have brought your music in that series :D

Bless him! Devin is a musical genius, we all know this, and to hear Devin speak in a raw way and to have him (kind of) let us into his mechanical process of writing is a rarity! He mentions writing city at a young age and how that changed his progressions to the next album and how he had difficulties as a kid and music was his release. I think anyone who is a devin fan, strapping fan, when dev wrote wig Vai, we can all relate to that and hope to see what the next part of the journey is. Immense work Devin! I have a very similar process, and I find these beautiful and sometimes very strange, unfamiliar, images and storys and textures flitting around my head, eventually they start adding up to things I couldn't've ever seen without that process, but so true and so real, despite the subjectivity and abstractness of their interpretation.

As a musician myself, I can so much relate to the things you've said in the video. Every Song that one writes is a piece of mind as means something special for yourself. The songs are like children of your own ;-) That's why I named my EP "Instrumental thoughts". Because even though I didn't write any lyrics for these songs, whenever I play them on the guitar or listen to them, memory's and thoughts pop up in my head. I'm very much looking forward to this documentary.

So, to sum up, this album is about dialectic; the balance between opposing forces, and how they are able to coexist without destroying one another (spoiler: take a step back and realize they’re not actually contrary but complimentary). Similarly, this album is about where you are psychologically right now, expressed externally as a form of musical thought experiment, which allows you to move on to the next “thing” personally.

I have recently become a huge fan of Devin from the Live @ Plovdiv with the DTP @ will be finally getting my box set of that after waiting for a month. I have been listening to a sampling of his albums of the different projects? (Devin Townsend, Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, Casualties of Cool) A lotta music out there! I am eager to hear what this will sound like. I think it will be a very Devinesque journey through HEAVY (Devy) , heavy, rock, progressive rock, &/or whatever put into one fantastic mix.
