Devil May Cry 5 - In-Depth GAMEPLAY Retrospective

Ойындар

After all this time, I've finally finished my DMC5 Retrospective. I wanted to get this out for awhile now and I actually had to do multiple revisions for the script to get something decent. I've kinda missed a few topics I wanted to talk about as well but this is as concise I can be on how I feel about DMC5 as a whole.

I understand your perspective on V and I get why he's frustrating for some but I think a good point to make is that V was created, at least to me, to create a character that fosters a specific kind of playstyle. Obviously its annoying to not be able to reposition yourself perfectly like you can with other characters, or to have to rely on things outside of your immediate control to fight, but that's the idea. He's disabled, he's supposed to reflect a disabled experience. And like you said, you can still play him masterfully. It just takes a particular shift of perspective. I think that its really cool that they managed to make a character who is disabled, who can still fight, whose disabilities aren't completely disregarded the moment that he enters the battlefield. I also think its interesting how he sort of reflects the same playstyle as Vergil's concentration meter without having that incentive. You're supposed to do a lot of crowd control, to understand the enemies you're fighting and keep him in safe, still places where he can replenish his DT regularly so he can keep dishing. That's a particular kind of challenge that, I feel, makes up for his lack of overwhelming mechanical depth. To clarify, again, my point isn't to say you have to like him. I just think that there should be some appreciation for how sophisticated of a construction he is. He's also the only purely new character in V, so he has no iteration to go off of. I think that if he did appear again in another game or an idea like him, they could nail him even more to the point where he's got some more meat on his bones.

True, certain critiques from higher end players are super specific tho and don't apply to the general 99% of players who'll never be that good at the game. So while they're critiques might be genuine and accurate theres not much that could be done or will be done rather to address their specific concerns. Like aside from high level play, and aside from comparing it to other dmcs theres really not much to criticize the game on in general. It's very well made on the whole.

I love dmc5 and probably have way more hours in it compared to 3. But I do miss the big burst of damage from the devil trigger explosion. And I don't mean to sound like a bitch, but can we get missions like in 4 where it's just a different character going through the same missions. I know it's lazy, but some of these v missions can suck a dick. Who put this dude of all people in a narrow ass hall to fight a gang of lizards? The nidhogg fight for v was ass too. Thankfully I don't got to do it anymore, but why is there a boss fight where one half of his moveset is useless? Other than the uppercut and spinning blade in the air. And I wish fixed camera angles weren't as hated. I'm doing hell and hell and fighting those teleporting blade lizards while the camera tries to keep up is crazy. I know the enemies are more consistent in this one compared to 3, but idk I think I still hate most of the enemies here too. Not as bad as those corrupted angels, the dark magic tit ball is damn near the worst enemy for me. They're just not fun because of how much time they spend running away. Come to think of it, a lot of enemies spend too much time running away and avoiding damage. The king pray mantis and snuggle worm are just really boring. The pray mantis is worse I think because the lock on is it's head, not the body. So it's hard to fight it when you're directly under our above it. Combine that with the camera issues and I definitely fucked up my back forward move.

A great way to sum up why V sucks is by paraphrasing a quote from Hakita, lead game designer of Ultrakill: “the reason I gave all of the weapons in Ultrakill infinite ammo is the same reason as why Dante’s sword doesn’t have durability. Doing so would discourage you from doing stylish things and force you to play in a boring but efficient way.” V’s gameplay, among many other mistakes, effectively gave your weapons durability.

V’s more like survival, whereas Dante, Nero and Vergil are about style. he’s much more intended to be a story character then one to really experiment with in combat, and while it’s a bad decision for combat, I get why they did it, and I do respect the choice from a story perspective.

@@DOT107 Yeah, for sure. I, myself, really enjoy V's gameplay despite having many of the same gripes others do about the character, but seeing as he was clearly very experimental as a new playable character for DMC, it can't be helped really. I probably would've tried to expand upon what he could do in the special edition of DMC5 by adding ways to manually reposition his familiars and more things he can do with the cane. IIRC, he doesn't really use the D-pad at all, so you could give him a way to teleport Shadow/Griffon to different locations while locked-on or swap positions with them. You could also give them new moves that are timed-counters, just something else so you don't have to rely on mashing dodge, Round Robin or manipulating their AI to move them out of the way. It'd also be cool if V himself had moves that use the cane to power up a familiar like having it float around them and reduce damage or do a follow-up attack kinda like summoned swords so you don't have to execute each enemy with Checkmate/Royal Fork spam. IDK, hopefully if they bring him back in DMC6 they do something to give players more control. lol

Enemies were really hard to spot in the environment. I felt like the game took too much of the visual philosophy from the recent resident evil games. This isn't a problem in those games since thats the intend for horror. I wish they went for more of a stylized look like monster Hunter rise. However since they were in the early development phases of the RE engine, they may have not been too confident in doing so and instead opted in for an emphasis on realism.

My only guess is that they purposely made it difficult as a balance attempt but who the fudge wants balance when playing as Vergil. Just make the input simple so i can be sure I'm not going to accidentally trick up into the boss when I'm trying to create distance!

I didn't even know reversals could be done outside of combat like that in DMC5, what a bizarre way to "fix" them. Even as a mostly casual player of the games I completely agree with this. While the kits in 5 are well and beyond anything else in 3D action games in terms of complexity, gimping mechanical depth in favour of the one in a thousand accidental reversal or the one in a MILLION occurence of someone missing an attack or getting hit because of inertia is just, so unnecessary. I feel like most people who engage with this series, even at a casual level, love to see what crazy impressive shit the combo gods come up with and while DMC5 is still a haven for combo gods (especially with mods) it should be a little disconcerting to see Capcom remove options from the game for questionable reasons at best. Especially when it seems to be deliberate and not a matter of limitation or something.

Beautiful video which pictures the way I feel about DMC4 vs DMC5 somewhat. I was never a great player in these games, I've tried to dabble with advanced tech, combos and freestyling a bit, made a few vids here and there for DMC5 mainly. Still, I like to think I managed to get a bit of a taste for it. DMC4 feels tighter and snappier no doubt and has it's own kind of advanced gameplay which vanilla DMC5 can't quite offer, yet I can't help but feel that DMC5 can still stand on it's own legs well enough in my eyes. For some reason even though I am aware how much more intricate DMC4 combos and freestyling are I always found them more visually pleasing in DMC5 clipss. My wish is that this isn't the end and we will get another DMC in the future, one where maybe the developers notice this kind of critique and try to find a middle ground. I won't lie, maybe it's just my shitty fingers but I found DMC4 a bit too tight for my taste in terms of input timing and reaction once I tried going into more advanced gameplay. DMC5 on the other hand felt a bit too lenient? I feel like there is something inbetween to be found, where the game feels snappy but doesn't require the tightest fine control from me as a player.

Don't get me wrong, the R.E Engine is awesome, but I think it is the root of some of the problems you mentioned like the less "responsive" animations/attacks, and the less interesting visual design. Just a thought I wanted to share, I always thought the DMC characters were designed like fighting characters. Like the developers made these characters, gave them moves you would see in a 2D fighting game, and instead made a 3D action game. If you consider fighting game styles and character terms, the characters make surprisingly more sense. Nero is a Grappler-like sword fighter character focusing on grab attacks with some extra fun tools in the form of Devil Breakers, built to be balanced enough to pick up for beginners but has extra mechanics for pro players. V is a Summoner/Zoner who relies on familiars to assist in offense, to have his familiars do most the work while he hangs back and attacks from a distance, or to deliver the killing blow in this case. Dante is the complicated All-Rounder with a lot of options, he has so many tools and options for everything that it makes him difficult to learn, but rewarding if mastered. And Vergil is the Overpowered DLC character that everyone is required to learn/use if they want to participate in high level play XD.

It's probably far to late but I noticed that the neo Balrog option from the trainer wasn't included here and for me having both move sets combined makes the weapon so much for fun. But anyways just stumbled across your videos and got to say this channel deserves more love. Keep up the good work friend!

27:51 FYI, (unless you've already found this out) there actually is a way to cancel DTE as Nero in 5. Simply hold the left stick in any direction and pop DT, whether moving or during an attack, the explosion won't interrupt you.

Idk what to exactly comment, but feel like I should write at least something considering all the hard work that went into this. The clip against the Antenora at 17:01 is mad nice looking. Not sure how you got the Calibur to send you away from the enemy like that exactly, but that part and baiting the jump attack with up jocky was really clean. And generally this was just a really nicely scripted and entertaining video. With criticisms layed out in a way where hopefully people will actually hear you out instead of instantly resorting to antagonism. Since you were also fair and pointed out a ton of positive qualities. 5 Dante's greatly expanded variety and more fleshed out weapon movesets really is a treat Anyway, happy to see this video doing good so far. Hope the views continue to flow in

I really like this kind of retrospective style of video but it feels kinda weird to hear critiques of the gameplay when it’s slightly modded. I know none of the mods actually necessarily change how the core gameplay is. But if you had to mod the game in anyway I feel like that creates a sort of bias on how good you think the gameplay is. I’m mainly talking about the mods that mess with animations not the turbo mode because that’s understandable.

  • @ChaserTech

I can understand what you meant tbh. But the reason why I enabled the mods to begin with is because of my experience with DMC3 and 4. Both of these games felt great to play out of the box so when I played DMC5 for roughly a month or two without any mods, I just couldn't enjoy it all that much. So after people started making mods to speed up the animations back to how they were in DMC3 and 4, it felt like normal. So it's not like I started playing DMC5 with mods from the beginning. I gave DMC5 a chance for awhile but I honestly didn't like how the game felt during that time, especially without Turbo Mode either.

Amazing video. Don't have much to say, even as mostly a casual player that enjoys trying my own combos in different games in the series, I agree with a lot of things that you said here. As I am mostly a Dante player, I greatly appreciate the insane amount of stuff that he can do in this game when compared to 3 and 4, but stuff like the gravity, slower animations, weird enemy step windows, and the overused slow motion instead of hit-stop on moves like perfect guard and real impact makes me want to play the others more, even if I wish I had his 5 arsenal

Brilliant video, I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on the game. I'm only slightly above average at DMC so I'm not really knowledgeable enough to critique the gameplay in any meaningful way. That being said, the weird gravity and the removal of reversals is something even I noticed. The gravity makes the game feel really floaty and the lack of reversals just makes no sense at all. Not only do reversals look cool af, they're also really useful as evasive tools. I don't know if DMC6 is gonna be Itsuno's next game after DD2 but whenever it does come, I hope it's gonna have the depth of DMC5 with the overall game feel of DMC4.

My main problems with dmc5 is the level design , you can't play the entire campaign with one character except Vergil and enemy design, but the level design is my biggest issue because entire game is giant corridor. I was expecting great level design from dmc1 and dmc3 or classic god of war games. But I still love this game and its one of my favorite games from last gen

my biggest issue with DMC5 is that each character gets so little screen time. I wish after the first playthrough each mission can be tackled by each character like Vergil gets to do. If there's ever a navigation issue, just add some magic platforms or teleportation pads. Its criminal that dante cant fight half of this games bosses in the campaign

Can't believe this game is already 4 years old. I miss how hyped up I was after it was announced. It's a very fine action but yeah like you said it got issues. It reparated many issues 3 and 4 had while creating new issues of its own. My biggest pet peeve is how Showdown is performed by pressing melee+devil breaker at the same time instead of melee+devil bringer. This 1) makes no sense since the move is clearly enabled by devil bringer and 2) messes up my muscle memory and keybind. I'm really glad this game allows fully rebindable controller input unlike... any games from Platinum, but it might also be time to allow customizations on how certain moves are performed.

Great job on the video. I loved DMC 5 but I feel like the game would have benefited having a full on character selection for all levels after you beat the game. I think the game would also benefit if enemies that function like 4's angelos, frost, abyss, and hell vanguard would make fights more intense(maybe I just like fighting them too much). As for V I just mod in a cane moveset for him(both enhance V mods) so feels more aggressive. I think reversals and inertia would benefit the more hardcore players(which I am not) and having free ride from 3 return for DMC 5's Nero, Dante, and Vergil would be cool(I like doing that in 3). I guess the art direction for 5 could have been better too, something felt lacking after mission 2. Must style mode would be nice too. I shouldn't have to mod in some of these features. I don't have the same camera issues as you do but as I said I probably don't push the characters to their limits as you do.

I feel like V needs a basic 2-3 hit ground and air combo, with his sidestep not being tied to Shadow. That way, he can function without them and feel more like a complete character with something to do. Maybe also give the last hit of his attacks unique properties... or his taunts. They can have unique properties to make him stand out and have something to do while he's just sitting there charging Shadow and Griffin

In my opinion, DMD Proto angelo's toughness is pretty similar to how DMC3's DMD is. The game wants you to relies on huge burst damage. But instead of only DTE in DMC3. we got Mega cascade, SDT, Cavaliere, Buster arm, showdown etc which was overkill in lower difficulty, had become more valuable outside of bossing. These moves also need some set up. I believed that's the reason Proto has such an obvious and telegraphed attacks since parrying is usually the best way to create an opening for these moves. And that's also the reason why V struggle with him so much. XD

You know what? I was fully prepared for this to be full of nitpicks and just overall negativity, but I'm pleasantly surprised to have been proven wrong. You've been fair for the most part, and I can agree with most of your points. I think DMC5 is the best game in the franchise, but I'm also baffled by some of the decisions they made in this game. I don't agree with the removal of reversals, and I would've loved it if they had spent some more time refining the tech from previous games. They definitely could've added more to the already great gameplay of DMC5. I want to point out a few more things, though. Regarding Nero having two snatches, I think Wire Snatch is just a redundancy because he doesn't have the Devil Bringer until the end of the game; the same applies to the Buster Arm. Also, I've put more than 1,000 hours in vanilla DMC5, and I've NEVER once encountered that camera issue you had towards the end. Are you sure it doesn't have anything to do with mods or some other external program?

  • @WanderDMC

    @WanderDMC

I've played with no mods at all and had the camera freak out on me on a few occassions. The earliest instance I've ever seen of the camera glitching out was someone playing the demo, so it's definitely just an issue that happens in the vanilla game. I don't think mods really make it much worse if at all, and if I had to guess I'd assume it's just caused by fast camera movements trying to keep up with high level play and how it handles being in tight spaces/colliding with walls since that's where it's most common to see issues

Love the game, and I love Nero’s combat so much!! Yeah, V really slows the pace down…. Which leads me to my biggest issue with the SE. The fact that they kept the stages character locked is kinda infuriating. You have this insane gameplay, and you’re stuck playing the same few stages as them over-and-over. Dante only gets 6 missions (not counting his boss missions)!! I’ll NEVER understand that decision. And then you look at Hi-Fi Rush that gives you tons of post-game content options, it makes the SE look like even more of a missed-opportunity.
