Devil Blade Reboot is a highly anticipated doujin shmup that finally came out on Steam yesterday.
The game has been in development since about 2017 and is made by Shigatake, a Vanillaware-affiliated illustrator, so you can expect some great production values here.
A remake of a game that started as a 1996 Dezaemon project.
Dezaemon being a popular 'Shmup Maker' on SNES, Saturn and PS1 (quite a lot of now fan-favorite shmups have similar roots).
The presentation of this game is one of the best I've seen. A highly cinematic audio and visual spectacle.
The gameplay is very good as well, it has an incredibly high pace with mechanics that encourage very aggressive play for the highest rewards.
Game is doing some cool new QOL features for the genre.
Enemies have different markers indicating whether they're ground or air enemies. The bullet and laser telegraphing lines from Natsuki Chronicles also seem to make a return here.
Pointblanking increases the enemy's score multiplier and your Berserk%.
When Berserk is at 100% you enter Berserk Mode and all multipliers are multiplied by 5 (x4 becomes x20). Enemy rank also goes up. Berserk lowers when you're not pointblanking.
Bombs can also be used as Boosts which increase Berserk% gain by 5 times while the hyper is in effect.
Inferno is the highest difficulty in the game, changes include:
- Bombs, Boost, and shields are not available.
- You will die if Berserk Mode remains inactive for too long (lol).
- Rank is always maxed out.
- Only 2 score extends.
The limited resources makes this pretty hard, the patterns themselves aren't that bad.
It seems a little silly to me that you can't use Boosts in this mode, as that is one of the main scoring systems of this game, but I guess that would make the main gimmick of this mode too easy.
Speaking of, you dying when you're not pointblanking enough is hilarious. That's one way to force people to play for score I guess.
According to the video and streaming rules of this game I apparently can't show you the ending or any other art from the game that's not in the intro and main game.

This game gives me some Ikaruga/Radiant Silvergun vibes when I play it
I wish more shmups would have telegraphed enemy attacks. It's a LOT more fun playing these, when you feel like you actually have a chance of dodging the bullets.

It really is an amazing blend. The telegraphing and pattern complexity of a bullet-hell, paired with the break-neck speed of a shmup. And oh, is it the prettiest game I've seen in a long time. Hands down.
We were joking in Aktane’s Kumite for this game that some one needs to wake you up so you could clear this mode 😂
badass music, gritty artstyle, billions of bullets, cheesy voice acting..... yeah, this is the most perfect shmup i've ever seen.
Someone was certainly a big fan of RayStorm and the other 2 games in that series. I can see it's inspiration and influence all over the place in this awesome game.

I honestly don't understand how you can be this good at a brand-new game. I could play a game like this for months and still struggle.

This is an extremely easy game compared to the clasic bullet hell Cave shmhps. Thisnis probably his 2nd or 3rd playthrough, at most.

High level player with lots of experience in the genre. Fundamental skills translate from game to game.

Jaimers mentioned it in another video, “I’ve just been playing a lot of these.” And by a lot, he means a *lot.* It’s like when you’re playing a sport and see everything someone is doing wrong, usually using more energy than they should be. My best advice to newcomers is to stop fidgeting around trying to dodge nothing, and seeing if you’re actually in any danger. You can make surprisingly little movement to dodge what seems to be impossibly fast swarms of bullets, if you can discern how they’re aimed (are they a fixed spread, or is it aiming directly at your position?). If they’re aimed directly at you, you can do something like position all the way to one side and crawl your way to the other side so you draw all of the enemy fire while giving yourself a lot of space. Almost every shmup will have that one point of just throwing like 70 popcorn enemies at you in a row to teach you that. Once you learn to keep avoiding a pattern like that, you’ll start seeing it in pretty much every other game just at different paces.

Berserk mode is literally the mode perfect for Hardcore players Go big or go home Be Brave, or Die a Coward

Meanwhile, I get killed the instant I accidentally trigger berserk mode on hard difficulty. Watching this was a thing of beauty!
It's full of homages to various shooting games, so it's fun to watch.

I love the forced Berserk system in Inferno conceptually, an adrenaline junkie who NEEDS to be in danger or else they'll fucking flatline lmao Sounds like a fun idea in other games, approach and engage or your heart will stop EDIT: Shigatake is more than "affiliated" with Vanillaware he's one of the founding members! He's been at that shit for decades!

Is there an option to continue if you die too many times? I thought 1cc is all you could do. I get to the end but could never beat the mech.
