Quick note: The ship cost $70,373,000 to construct. The United States Lines paid 28 million while the government paid 42 million.

And will forever because shipping companies want to streach out your stay to make money.

What always impresses me about these great old ships is how they turned the Utilitarian into the Elegant. Why do people like us love giant floating metal boxes? They are beautiful! Thanks for the video, and interestingly Her speed is faster than a FORD Maverick I used to own. THANKS! Love, David

Remember touring her with my grandfather when she was docked in New York City. This would have been in the late 1960’s. My grandfather was a power engineer who managed plants for factory refrigeration systems prior to grid power. This video explained details of her power plant that would have been of great to him.

The sad part is that the age of the ocean liner was dying as the jet age was coming into being. This ship is now just a rusting sad hulk.

As a large troop transfer ship, the SS United States did not really fulfill its purpose. WWIII never happened because both Japan and Germany were pacified... and the Soviet Union had nuclear weapons so they could not be directly attacked. Instead, troops could be transported efficiently on aircraft carriers which were war machines in themselves... in addition to the C-130 airplane which could quickly move a large amount of troops. This oceanliner was popular with the chic rich class of the 1950s... but jetliners flying across the Atlantic Ocean made it obsolete by the late 1960s.

Was a bit disappointed that you did not mention that the ship was damaged because of cavitation as it drove to break the record for transatlantic transit. I saw it many times as i was driving along I-95 in Philadelphis. It was so slim it was hard to beleive it would not tip over in weather.

The video is not intended to give every detail of the ship. My goal was to cover its story prior to entering service and no further. I select a topic, make said topic the title, and stick to it. I'll be returning to the United States in the future for different topics. Thanks for commenting.

@@centralcrossing4732 Seems like an interesting topic that could easily take an entire video. Something that has facinated me. How could they not know, and what sort of damage was done.
