Damn Dubnyk is a great analyst

Ovi has the most shots, his fire power is the most brutal in the game history. That is how he's got this goal number. And he still keeps going very strong at 37 👍🏻

I would also like to add an anecdote about Ovi and Petr Mrazek. In November 2015, the Caps went to Detroit with Alex Ovechkin sitting at 483 goals and needing one (1) goal to pass Sergei Fedorov for the most NHL goals scored by a Russian player. You may well imagine that Ovi intended to score that goal in Fedorov's barn. However, Petr Mrazek decided that it was not to be and stopped FIFTEEN Ovishots. Alex had to "settle" for scoring his 484th at home against Dallas. I am quite certain that he had Chicago circled on his calendar this season.

Well, Devan Dubnyk is part of the fraternity of Goalies Who Have Been Scored On By Alex Ovechkin, and that's not such a bad thing. The man has averaged exactly 50 goals every 82 games for sixteen full seasons (this is his eighteenth calendar season but the lockout/covid/injuries robbed him of some games), and he scores one goal roughly every eight (heh) shots. He's really a bit of a metronome, and has been a delight to watch him play. Thanks for the insights!

Glad they used John Walton's radio call of his 800th goal, because the ESPN call was god awful.

Why did they part ways with NBC?

I think Dubnyk talking about how you play Ovi is different. On NHL network they were talking about how Pasternak and other guys have more accurate one timers. If you look at Pasta and guys like Tage Thompson they have plenty of time to shoot their one timer and the goalie isn’t over playing them like they do Ovi. Ovi has history and he doesn’t have a LH shot on the other side the goalie has to worry about. Pasta, Thompson, Stamkos all have LH shots on the other side that are dangerous but Ovi has to shoot it through the goalie because they are already there when the puck is passed to him

800 is 800. OVI Is the only player that's doing it; if it's that simple ("hammering" and "have legs") then maybe 50% of the players would have 700 + goals...Give the Man his due; goalie equipment is so much larger than Gretzky and Howe's days 😳

Some of this is great (Dubnyk) other analysis isn't. The comment about how he hasn't changed since the get go is just objectively false. Ovechkin has changed his game IMMENSELY over the years. He's compensated for losing that speed he used to have in his prime and that's when he really developed the one timer from the left circle. That shot and how he scores really only started happening in 2015, prior to that Ovechkin scored everywhere and more prolifically that anyone in history. He's a 3 time MVP, he was a much different player in his prime.

2:39 I was in Raleigh for this goal on Halloween night last year. Upper deck on the opposite side. Me and my friend saw it happen before it happen. The puck made its way to the point and as soon as we saw him start gliding backwards my friend tapped me and said "here it comes he's about to rip one" then bam. In and out of the net.

His shot has forward english on it.

Gretzky did it against 5'9 goaltenders that couldn't even butterfly and had an average SV% league wide of like 880. That doesn't even get you into the AHL now. The minute goaltending improved Gretzky didnt' hit 40 goals again. Nothing about Gretzky's goal scoring would translate to elite in the modern game, he'd be a 30 goal guy at best.
