*The opening cutscene of this game is one of the most complex cutscenes in gaming history. Here it is, explained in full:* *SETTING:* Bob Page's office (probably the _VersaLife_ building in Hong Kong that featured in the original Deus Ex; note it says "Hong Kong" on his screen). *DATE:* The year is 2027. That's 25 years before the original Deus Ex, which took place in 2052. It is only 5 years or so before the coup within the Illuminati (dated somewhere between 2031 and 2035), whereby Bob Page will set himself up as the _de facto_ ruler of the world behind the scenes - betraying the rest of his fellow Illuminati. Its 19 years before the largest stock market crash in history (the Crash of '46). *SUBJECT:* We see a 37-year-old Bob Page, main antagonist from the original Deus Ex (much younger here), and one of the best antagonists in gaming. He is very "friendly" by disposition ("please! call me Bob.."), but is simply devoid of any morality and is extremely ambitious. At this time he is one of the top five Illuminati, a secret society basically in control of the world. Probably third or fourth-ranking in the organization, he leads the "Majestic 12" division of the Illuminati, a section in charge of technological matters. He's also (among other things) the CEO and majority stockholder of the _VersaLife Corporation,_ a multinational medical and bioengineering company with a monopoly on the production of Neuropozine (the drug all augmented people regularly need to avoid having their augments rejected by their immune system). While _VersaLife_, headquartered in Hong Kong, is the main "evil corporation" associated with Page in the games, note that its only a subsidiary of the massive _Page Industries_ conglomerate, which is Page's main commercial entity. By the time of the original Deus Ex, _Page Industries_ will become the largest and most powerful commercial entity on the planet, several times over (mostly by capitalizing on a cataclysmic stock market crash in 2046). *CONTEXT:* Up to this point the Illuminati were content in their control over augmentations through VersaLife's monopoly on Neuropozine - however, David Sarif's research team, headed by Megan Reed, is just now preparing to go public with their discovery of a means to make Neuropozine unnecessary. David Sarif is an augmentations industrialist who consistently refuses invitations to get cozy with the Illuminati, because he believes augmentations should be unlimited. Megan Reed is his top researcher who discovered the gene sequence necessary for a complete and total (Neuropozine-free) interface between man and machine - something Bob Page had incidentally been after for a very long time, for his own reasons (see below). *EVENT:* Highest-level Illuminati meeting on maintaining control over augmentations. Augs increase both _mental(!)_ and physical abilities of mankind, and can _not_ be allowed to remain outside their control. They have two currently-ongoing plans of achieving control over this process: *#1* political lobbying and pressure on lawmakers headed by illuminatus William Taggart (present), which has been going on for some time now and making progress; the idea here is to control augs in the "conservative" way, through the puppet governments of the world. And *#2* the introduction of a new "kill-switch" biochip to all augmented people, which would deactivate their augs (individually or altogether) at the Illuminati's discretion. The latter method is now favored, because David Sarif is moving too fast with his discovery. *PARTICIPANTS:* We know the number of participants is deliberate, because the developers changed it from their original cutscene, to add more silent heads. Seven heads and Page give us a total of eight participants in this meeting: *they are the Ruling Council of Five + three lower-ranking Illuminati.* The Ruling Council of Five is the top Illuminati body, and its members for the period are known in Deus Ex lore; all (except DuClare) were introduced in the original game. None of them appear personally in Human Revolution, aside from Page (and that only in the intro and post-credits cutscene). The members are: *Lucius DeBeers* (head of the Illuminati; speaks; Southern accent) *Morgan Everett* (second-ranking; instant-messenger with Page) *Stanton Dowd* (third-ranking, completely silent) *Bob Page* (fourth-ranking, or perhaps third?; depicted in person) *Beth DuClare* (French accent, distribution of biochip) The three new guys, the "lower-rankers", were introduced as antagonists for Human Revolution - and all die at the end of the game, according to the canon ending. They are present here because they're the Illuminati directly handling the augmentations issue. They answer to Page because he's the member of the Ruling Council of Five in charge of technological concerns - as head of the "Majestic 12" division. They are, obviously: *William Taggart* (ordinary American accent, pressure on lawmakers) *Hugh Darrow* (British accent, development of biochip) *Zhao Yun Ru* (Chinese accent, manufacture of biochip) All three lower-level Illuminati heads speak, and can easily be discerned. Of the Ruling Council of Five, two heads speak (plus Page himself). That leaves two heads belonging to members of the Ruling Council of Five that remain silent - but we can guess who they are, because we know the composition of the Five. In order of speaking, the heads are: *Zhao Yun Ru*, one of the three lower-rankers. CEO of the _Tai Yong Medical_ augmentations corporation. She is more-or-less in charge of the biochip solution. Her task will be to *_manufacture_* the biochip with her company's massive resources.. She has also "spoken with Montreal" to ensure the Illuminati-controlled, globally-dominant Picus Network spreads panic to motivate people to get the chip. Zhao is new to the Illuminati and rather low-ranking. [Zhao appears in the game.] *Beth DuClare* (French accent, with a very deep vocoder). Member of the Ruling Council of Five. Illuminata in charge of medical matters, and basically in control of the UN's World Health Organization (WHO). Her task will be to ensure the Limb augmentation clinics *_distribute_* the biochip, through the fact that the WHO "controls their purse strings". [DuClare does not personally appear in any Deus Ex game, but is well known of. Her daughter appears in the original Deus Ex.] Note, because of the deep vocoder, this is admittedly the least certain guess (it could be some unknown French guy?), but it fits and makes sense. She is mentioned on Picus news, in relation to the WHO and the Limb clinics. *William Taggart* (he speaks twice), one of the three lower-rankers. He is the illuminatus in charge of the alternative method, the political lobbying for augmentation legislation, which will place the tech under their control through the laws of the world's puppet governments. He's moving too slow, however, and is basically being sidelined in favor of the biochip. Nevertheless, he will proceed with his solution, parallel with the biochip effort. [Taggart appears in this game] *Lucius DeBeers* (southern accent): Head of the Ruling Council of Five - and basically the most powerful man in the world. He's the aging, but intelligent and very lucid, leader of the Illuminati (about 100 years old now). He's leaning in favor of the biochip method because he thinks Sarif is moving too fast (Taggart tries to convince him otherwise, when Page intercedes). [De Beers does not appear in this game, he makes a brief appearance in the original Deus Ex] *Hugh Darrow* (British accent), one of the three lower-rankers. The "Father of Augmentation Technology". His task is to *_develop_* the biochip. He knows David Sarif personally, and expresses satisfaction at the discovery of the gene sequence, because it allows for the finalization of the biochip's development. [Darrow appears in this game] Finally there's the person Bob Page is secretly messaging with through an embedded signal: its none of the above, but one of the two silent heads. It is almost certainly Page's mentor, ally, and sponsor in the Illuminati - *Morgan Everett,* the current "Number 2" in the organization (after the aging Lucius DeBeers). This is strongly suggested by Page talking with _him_ on the subject of Megan Reed in the post-credits cutscene ("she's here"). The last, seventh head is most probably that of *Stanton Dowd*. A very prominent Templar Illuminatus in charge of banking, who logically has nothing to say on this matter and therefore keeps silent. He is the current "Number 3" in the Illuminati, after Everett and DeBeers, and appears in the original Deus Ex. (As with DuClare, though, that's really just a guess based on nothing but the 5+3 logic of the setup.) *DECISION*: In the end it is decided to go forward with the biochip solution immediately: they will kidnap Megan Reed and the rest of the Sarif research team, both to prevent their publishing the new man-machine interface gene sequence discovery - but also to force them to help develop the biochip, which (as Darrow says) could greatly benefit that effort. *SECRET AGENDAS:* There are three separate secret agendas in this meeting, that of Bob Page & Morgan Everett (the person with whom Page is messaging), Bob Page alone - and that of Hugh Darrow. Meanwhile, Bob Page also has his own secret intentions, unknown to Morgan Everett (whom he will betray some time before the time of the original Deus Ex). *Secret agenda of Bob Page and Morgan Everett* (Page especially). They are out to develop NANO-AUGMENTATIONS (as opposed to mechanical ones), which stand to give the augment massive physical and mental abilities - and for which they need Megan Reed's gene sequence. NOTE IN THIS REGARD: In the cutscene, when Bob Page finds out (from Everett in their messaging) that Megan Reed has the gene sequence he needs for his nano-augmentation development - he immediately intercedes against Taggart and argues for the biochip method. Which will involve the kidnapping of Megan Reed and their quick acquisition of the gene sequence. *Secret agenda of Bob Page himself* - unknown to Morgan Everett, Bob Page (his protege) is developing the nano-augmentations as part of a secret pet project of his - to overthrow the Illuminati, rule the world from the shadows, and make himself a kind of _LIVING GOD_ (which he very nearly does in the original Deus Ex). To do that he needs (among other things) Megan Reed's gene sequence that allows for a complete (and obviously Neuropozine-free) interface between man and machine - and thereby facilitates NANO augmentation. In fact, the sequence is originally _his,_ not Megan Reed's - Reed just found it in Jensen. Page's company developed it, however - through using human babies as lab rats, and murdering them. [Speculation: Imo its unlikely that the Illuminati in general knew about these experiments. Everett maybe did, but perhaps not DeBeers.] They took place in _White Helix Labs_ (a subsidiary of his _VersaLife Corporation_), which fronted as a research center for congenital genetic diseases. Adam Jensen's biological father and mother (we don't know their name, it wasn't 'Jensen') succeeded in spawning the sequence in a child that was their own biological offspring (presumably like many others). That's Adam. At that point, they decided they could no longer take this, and, knowing there's ultimately no escape from Page, decided to burn the labs down along with themselves - to stop the experiments. Adam was however rescued by a nurse, and was later adopted by the Jensen family. Of course, at the end of the game, with _Sarif Industries_ collapsing, Megan Reed joins Page at _VersaLife._ That means one way or another - Bob got his gene sequence... In a roundabout way, through Megan Reed - who got it from her ex-boyfriend, Jensen. To move his plan along, Bob needs both nano-augmentation - and a true artificial sentience. That's what his Hyron Project (HR end boss) is about. Finally, there's the *secret agenda of Hugh Darrow* (the scientific genius and billionaire) tasked with actually developing the biochip. Unknown to the other Illuminati, he has come to HATE augmentations and does not seek to control them (as the Illuminati do) - he instead wants to make sure they're rejected by humanity, and destroyed altogether. He is the man who discovered them (which is how he made his fortune and why he was invited to join the Illuminati), but now he thinks they will destroy humanity... which they kinda almost do later on in Deus Ex. He will develop the biochip, not as a "shut down switch" to maintain discreet control over all augmented people - but as a "go crazy switch", which will make all augmented people go beserk (while the signal is on) through induced violent hallucinations, and force a ban by the authorities. He convinces the kidnapped Megan Reed to help him in this goal. This is what happens at the end of Human Revolution: Darrow broadcasts a "go nuts" signal and all augmented people basically go insane and violent (temporarily! the effect passes once the signal is shut down). According to the canon ending, this succeeds... in fact, all the "secret agendas" succeed ;). Enjoy the game!

Subtle and obvious naming him Adam. His DNA used to build the next human race, the biblical reference fits well.

i dont know why this game hits me so hard but i just cant stop playing it. i feel myself getting absorbed into the story and its so peaceful at times, so thought provoking, and so action packed... its a game that just bleeds into the world around you while playing. 24 hours until the directors cut and i can play it again :D

Playing through this game again and noting all the little nudges and bits of foreshadowing is really satisfying.

Funny, the actual gameplay graphics looks better and more detailed than the pre-rendered cutscenes.

Nah, showing you that there are two ways that cutscene can go, depending on whether you choose to take the chip "upgrade" or not, earlier in the game.

I chose the the first given ending. The Darrow one. Not because I'm for or against augmentation but because I believe people SHOULD know the truth regardless of the consequences. A close second choice was that I'd choose to destroy the facility. I killed Darrow for all the killings he was responsible. I killed Sarif because of all the Bulls_it lies he was willing to tell me and the world. Believe it or not I didn't kill Taggart. In the end, he made the most sense to me in regards to his philosophy of allowing augmentation with some restrictions placed on it.

I love it! But you missed the whole cute scenes from Rifleman Bay.

This story is so way better than that of mankind divided! What a pity: with the better gameplay and better graphics of mankind divided and a true story as this of human revolution they could have done a real sci-fi/cyberpunk masterpiece! I hope they will create a new game long enough to dig the story of the illuminati that are behind the facts of both games.

i love this game but the cut scenes piss me off a bit, because some of theme make Jensen look like an idiot. in game your stealthing or shooting your way through, but in some of the cut scenes Jensen just slowly and stupid strolls into the middle of the room and gets punched or ambushed after or before some dialogue. again not bashing all cut scenes, just some of the one pyre to boss battle/ambush scenes.

I feel there should have been at least two types of cut-scenes: 1. for those who killed all the way in the game, and 2. for those being the pacifist most of the time which would get a more subtle, stealthy, compassionate approach to conversations and movements Jensen makes in the cut-scenes.

Zabeus Zhao was augmented to be able to use Hyron, all her augmentations were hidden, it was also suggested that she was creating an new Casie mode that couldn't be detected through the facial markings.

Killing Barret was the MOST satisying. What a prick lol!

Does Adam Jensen(main character) sound kind of like Timothy Olyphant?

In my head universe this Bob Page is the clone son of the original Bob Page from the OG Deus Ex game set in dystopian version year of 2000.

Though I think it's partially due to simplifying the choices, why does augmentation automatically equal all technology lumped in the same category? Darrow's ending is stupid because as Eliza says, humanity will probably cast aside all science and technology - just because they reject augmentation. Sarif's makes sense from the POV of 'all progress is good' - but we know not everyone has the best intentions. There's no real reason why Jensen would murder everyone in the station - he has to know leaving things to take their course will probably not work. We know as a fact (because of what has happened by Deus Ex) that it won't work. I think the most fitting 'canon' ending is either Sarif's or Taggart's. Both are decent choices as HR endings and both can quite clearly lead to the world as it is in Deus Ex.

The way i see it DX1 is far in the future enough so that all endings, "Up to this point in the story that is", are feasible. I don't like the Idea of Jensen dying and destroying everything being cannon though. Parting from the perspective that Jensen is a character that has so much potential in the series still. I mean Jensen could even be the "Biological Father" of the Denton brother for all we know. they are well in that time frame.So the f*ck all ending is akin to the Shepard death in mass effect 2, "yea is possible" but not how the story is meant to be.

He didn't know the timer was only 10 seconds. Like, nobody in their right mind would set a C4 timer to less than a minute. Tong set him up and he realized it, thus the "shit".

I hope they make another "Great Deus Ex" game, but i'm terribly afraid of them fu**ing up the Masterpiece that Deus Ex is like what happened with Ion's Storm's Deus Ex Invisible War. To me Deus Ex is one of the few games that keep the core-old-school soul that made games from the 90's to around mid 2000's so great. and not the bloody shite that games now have become.

BY the way i hear there is a rumor Eidos Montréal is making indeed another Deus Ex game called Deus Ex universe. thats why I'm a little skeptical about it, i dont like the name it sounds like an MMORPG. But then again Human Revolution surprised me when i though it was gonna be a kaked.

One of my favourite games

Something is wrong with the text message Page was sending on screen. First, the white text says "Have you seen her research?" It seems like this is a text from a unnamed third party asking Page the question, which is further supported by the fact that Page does not have his keyboard out until after this text appears. Then the yellow text responds "yes." which is apparently Bob Page's response. So far it's established that Bob Page = yellow text, Unnamed person = white text. But it does not make sense because later we see the yellow text (Bob Page) saying "she's out of our reach", with the white text saying "is she?" It doesn't make sense for Bob Page to be saying Megan is out of his reach because he was the one who sent the Tyrants to retrieve her in the first place I believe Eidos made a mistake there.

I've done some thinking about that and it does make sense to me: The white text, who I believe is Morgan Everett, says that Reed has found what they need. Yellow text, Bob Page dismisses her as unattainable by saying she's out of our reach. Everett redirects the question by saying "Is She?". When he asks "is she", he's basically asking: "Are you sure she's unattainable? Why can't we just kidnap her with brute force?"

ill have to agree with 1,3 and 4. well maybe not 3 since in the end hes entrusting it to the leaders but 4 is leaving it to mankind to decide so 1 and 4. To kill what that guy created so humans won't no longer seek enchantment... maybe there could had been another way but I see where hes coming from..

Awesome Game! I just beat it.

I have a hard time believing that Adam would willingly blow up Panchea and not only kill himself, but Sariff as well as hundreds (if not thousands) of innocent people. Neither do I believe that Jensen would be delusional enough to follow Darrows line of reasoning. I'd argue that the Sariff and Illuminati endings are probably the two most likely to be cannon and the ones that make the most sense for Adam to pick. I'm pretty sure though that the Sariff/trans-humanism ending is meant to be the cannon one.

Like the game says Darrow's line of thought was flawed. But the man had I point, i give. If i was in darrows shoes I'm not so sure i'll open that Pandora box. but then again once someone discovers something that's possible someone else will discover it eventually. Science and technology, like life, always finds a way to emerge by itself. I know, I'm the very model of a scientist salarian.

For me personally, the last option fits me best, people should have the right to choose without being directed. Sarif was never really honest with Jensen, and to me he felt like the manipulator type of boss. Taggart was the fake everything for profit guy, anyways I didn't like him. Darrow may have had a point but his philosophy is flawed at its roots, which makes his ending unfit. They all have their fair share of sins, and they all deserved what was coming for them, as for the workers, I suppose that's just collateral damage, at least they died for the greater good. I played the game six times now, and every time I've chosen the fourth ending, it just sits better with me.

Arngeir righ that's what mkes the game so deep. characters are flawed just like real humans. there is no pure good ending, just a compromise of what feels right to jensen

It depends how you do the mission. You can go through in the went, that leads to Tong's room and complete the mission. In my first play I had these cutscene, but on the second one I found possiblity to talk my way to this room. If you go through the went, the door to this room will be close for the rest of the game.

:D What a superb perversion of critical thinking ! The thought process behind this game and the ideas that it promotes, is scary in and on itself. Yet, the twisted, distorted and fogy vision of humanity, presented int the game and its conclusions, looks so convincing, that it is painful to contemplate that people actually fallow through, with it. So sad, and even more so, as this game is one of the or the best games of this genre.

They are all valid endings based on your choice. There is no canonical ending for Mankind Divided. It will never be mentioned which ending Adam chose. The only thing that leads into Mankind Divided is that all Augmented people went crazy.

The 'canonical' ending doesn't exist as you said, as the MD follow up is as follows - the aug incident panic spread around the globe and no matter what message you send it gets manipulated by the Illuminati to how they want it: Augs to be segregated and put in ghettos. I can't quite remember but I think the only NON canon ending is the destruction of Panchaea in, due to Adam dying. This was all confirmed by edios in various interviews.

I wish the ending to this game was as good as the beginning. You don't ever hear from any of those illuminati people again and it's made out to be the misguided and poorly thought out plan of one man in the end instead of an elaborate and deliberate plan like the beginning would suggest.
