Detroit man found guilty after shooting at black teen who knocked on his door

Last April, in suburban Detroit, a teenager got lost on his way to school and knocked on a door to ask for directions. The homeowner, Jeffrey Ziegler, opened the door armed with a shotgun and fired at the teen as he ran for his life. On Friday, a jury found Ziegler guilty of assault. Dean Reynolds reports.

To educate people about another similar case. In October 1992, Yoshihiro Hattori (a 16-year-old Japanese exchange student) knocked on the wrong door thinking it was the house of a Halloween party that he planned on attending was shot and killed by a .44 Magnum revolver. Police initially released his killer without charge, assuming he was within his rights to shoot a trespasser. But after complaints from Louisiana's governor and Japan's consul in New Orleans, he was charged with manslaughter. His lawyers worked hard to establish his actions as self-defence. They said Peairs was "no killer", simply "one of your neighbours" who was reacting to Yoshi's "extremely unusual way of moving". Meanwhile, Bonnie Peairs - Rodney's wife, who first opened the door - told the court Yoshi had scared her and she had ordered her husband to "get the gun". The defence worked. In May 1993, Rodney Peairs was acquitted after a jury deliberation of just three hours. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50063364

@Eric Villegas certainly not about to use my firearms unless i have to. But my point still stands. Caution is needed on both parties parts. The kid wasn't smart knocking on a strangers doors and the stranger over reacted. The more important factor is no one died. Now lets be honest if the kid wasn't black would the media care at all? Its as usual a mess.

There was a study done in Georgetown about this, actually; the study was pretty much a way to record how adults (from many different races) viewed young girls (once again, from many different races). Whenever the testers showed the adults a picture of a white, fair, euro-centric 5 year old girl and gave them a follow up question like: "Does this [young] girl look like she needs protecting to you?" the subjects in question would always answer affirmatively, saying the young girl DOES need protecting. However, whenever they brought out a picture of a black, dark skinned, afro 5 year old girl, the same people, given the same question (again), would answer negatively this time; saying that the young black girl does NOT need protecting. Us viewing black people as older, capable, and brash has been ingrained into many of us, believe it or not. That's why whenever a black person, any age they may be, does something wrong they always, ALWAYS get penalized harsher than you would see done to a white person. Because many people think that they should "know better by now".

The Gospel message we share: GOD Loves us all. JESUS CHRIST came to seek and to save that which was lost. HE came into this world to save sinners. All humans have sinned except JESUS CHRIST. JESUS lived a perfect life yet died a horrible death for our sins. GOD the FATHER raised HIS SON up from the dead and set HIM at HIS own RIGHT HAND in Heaven. JESUS CHRIST shall return again at the appointed time to judge the world in righteousness. Only those who are born of the SPIRIT of GOD shall be saved in the end. Therefore, to see GOD you "Must" be Born Again (Jn 3:3). Call on JESUS CHRIST! Ask HIM to save your soul today. Be baptized with water and "Receive and Obey" HIS WORDS all of your days, seeking GOD'S HOLY FACE in prayer every day and night so that you can be ready when the LORD returns. AMEN. If you have any questions or desire prayer, feel free to contact me. JESUS CHRIST loves you. AMEN. Does it make a change to the universe where a black man is arrested and treated brutally more than a white guy that commited the same crime. @@otegadamagicNo reasonable gun owner would do that but thieves have been known to use the "knock the door" tactic when casing houses to make sure the coast is clear. In some cases they'll send someone else ( sometimes a girl or woman) asking for help to get the homeowner to drop their guard before launching a home invasion. While this rarely happens, it's always good to be prepared. This case however is despicable and clearly shows the homeowners were wrong in doing what they did, leading us to infer that they acted on their prejudiced beliefs rather than on the actual circumstance. This kid did not do anything that could be construed as shady (furtive gestures, trying to hide his face, etc) that would have merited this kind of violent response.

Repent racists and follow JESUS CHRIST everyone. AMEN Greetings dear ones, JESUS CHRIST loves us all and "Salvation" is in HIS NAME "Alone." "Believe and be Saved!" AMEN. AMEN. This video is from 2018 not 1980. Nobody walks up to a strangers door asking for directions in this generation with the technology we have. Most people today carry a cell phone that has GOOGLE GPS or you can Google search places phone a numbers. Why didn't he use the cell phone and call his parents. Why didn't he turn on the GPS or call the school using Google search. Why go to a complete strangers house. I never heard of anyone going up to a strangers house asking for directions unless their standing outside. Usually people ask for directions in a public building (Gas Station) or someone walking down the street

There’s a reasonable chance this kid skipped school to rob houses. Knocking on the door is a common way to see if people are home. Asking for directions is a good excuse to use if someone answers. Think about it. How does this kid not know where his own school is especially if it’s allegedly within walking distance? Does he really not have a smartphone? His parents and neighbors couldn’t give him a ride? Something’s off.
