Using a lawn mower to remove thatch from the grass just requires putting on a special blade and being ready to clean up all the dead grass/roots that are pulled up. See how it was done in my yard. This should help your lawn be healthier.

    I just welded a couple 9 inch reciprocating blades to the bottom of the lawn mower blade and small about inch nail coming down to do the raking looks like it will work well. With the spring steel from the blade makes it very adjustable with just a slight bend.

  • @chrish8871
    @chrish88714 жыл бұрын

    These work well. Bit severe on the remaining grass if you want to get down to root level and get the moss out as well. But grass will grow back... obvs. Cut grass first. Big area with long grass and trimmings under the deck will see the springs snap off prematurely. Short grass gives the springs a much easier time. Might need a couple of passes depending on severity needed if first scarify in ages. Then just hoover up again in mowing mode when done. Although I have a ride on mower for that. 😎 ps, get spare springs esp on a big area

    Do u use the dethatching blades on ur riding mower? I just bought a 48" dethatching rake, that looks like a mini hay rake, to pull behind my zero turn. Hopefully it will be delivered in a couple days. I have 1.17 acres, that I just purchased, and all that had been done to the land was brush hogging it for years. There is so much dead & rotten grass everywhere. I have already raked, loaded and hauled off and dumped, at my boyfriend's brother's place, for his cattle to eat, due to triple digit weather and no rain for months. I've taken about the equivalent of one huge round bale, and I still have enough for about 6 to 8 more huge, packed down pickup loads. Thank u for any information. It is greatly appreciated. God Bless...

    First time I dethached my lawn, set the thatch blade as he shows. Made 4 passes on the lawn, looked like it was ruined enough to need reseeding or sod. 😱 About 3 weeks later, that patch had the thickest, greenest grass of the entire yard.

    Don Key Because I didn’t want to be flipping back and forth between the thatcher and the cutting blade, I cheated and raised the thatcher a bit. It got a lot of the thatch out of the lawn, that second part was no where near as nice as those first passes. Never got the guts to run it at the lower - probably correct - setting. I was genuinely freaked out but the looks of those first passes. Following years I rented a de thatcher from the hardware store with the vertical spinning blades. Results where OK, but not great. Compared those original passes. No nerve/guts.

I feel like grass with above ground runners (stolons) like Bermuda, Centipede, St. Augustine, Zoysia may end up having the whole lawn ruined from the fact that the blade spins horizontal to the surface instead of perpendicular like electric dethatchers.

    My understanding is you de thatch when your build up is over 1/2 an inch of material. I have lived in my house 48 years and have de thatched once using a rented machine from home depot. I cut my lawn on the highest setting using a much blade (i don't bag it), I have no sprinkler and despite that I have a greener, thicker lawn than my neighbors who use a landscaper and have a sprinkler. Landscapers always cut the lawn too short and this causes the grass to be thinner and less resistant to weeds not to mention dry off of water is faster. My lawn stays green in the middle of summer and I never water my lawn (I live in suburbs of Chicago). Best thing I ever learned was to cut my grass on the highest setting.

    seering this vid gave me an idea... given how the mower bag doesnt work for pickup simultaneous with the thatching. its to sprinke dry bags of leaf from last fall atop the scraped up dead grass. then with the regular blade 'mow' over it all , collect the mix into bags. and spread the mix onto tilled up ground that is your designated 'soil- garden' site. once spread re-till the ground to begin mixing in this organic leaf-grass mix. then give it a watering. repeat later with the same saved bags of leaf and newly growing grass. by the end of summer you will have a good top 6" layer of so-so. dirt becoming rich soil. when i first started doing this the surprise was how much organic matter the soil could absorb. and not show it . yet the ground becomes lighter and un-clumped. now , this spring this soil will be appied to the formal garden beds as a top-layer. repeat ... besides a lawn mower with a thatcher blade a roto-tiller is needed. or you could do it by hand. turning the ground is great exercise.

    My findings with a dethatching blade: May have to bend the metal tines a bit more if your mower doesn't go low enough. Just use a pair of pliers. 2) The blade acts as a flywheel to give momentum when starting, going from a 21 inch to a 16 may require a few pulls to start it. 3) DO NOT use a impact gun to put the bolt on, sure as frig your gonna strip the bolt, then your gonna be in a world of hurt. 4) Do your home work, these "universal" blades do not fit some mowers. The one I bought said fits craftsman on the package, but when I got it home and used it, I realized my mower had the star mount adapter which the cheap dethatching blade didn't include the mounting bracket for it.

    I bought a thatching blade today, it had no instructions with it and the blade included several washer type items in a couple different sizes, where do they go? So you are saying mow first, then replace with thatching blade, then mow again to pick up all the dead grass? Won't Thatcher kick dead grass into the bag?

    You won't need to use all the washers; if indeed any. It will depend on the size and shape of the center shaft of your mower. If the shaft is smaller in diameter than the blade hole, then one of those washers should be placed in the hole to center everything on the shaft. Also, be sure to check the balance of the blade by suspending it on a clothes hanger (or similar) over a level surface. If the blade balances lower on one side, then you'll need to file the blade on that side, until it suspends horizontally. This will cut down on vibration when the mower is running. Other than just mowing again to pick up the thatch, you could also use a leaf blower to assemble the thatch in piles and just manually pick up.

  • @paulmaxwell8851

    In my experience dethatching blades do not pick up and throw the dead grass well at all. You must rake it all up by hand, or if you're lucky the regular mower blade will vacuum it up and bag it for you.

    I bought a similar dethatching blade and my end result was a scalped yellow lawn. I would not recommend this idea to anyone. While the dethatching blade cost me around $18 at least I can remove the tines and have a third blade. It's been 15 days in the fall with almost no rain over that period but thanks to time and a few light waterings the green is returning. The brand I bought was Arnold.

  • @paulm.7422

    @paulm.7422

    6 жыл бұрын

    I also have the Arnold blade - using it on St Augustine grass. Just a couple of points ... 1. The time to dethatch is in the early spring, just ahead of growing season. That way, if you do make any mistakes, you have a full growing season for the lawn to recover. 2. You really need to get the right height set on your mower, to ensure that you don't destroy your lawn. That will require a couple of test runs and height tweaks. 3. The yellow dethatching tines supplied with the Arnold are a little too short for many lawns. Just purchase a roll of Magnum Gatorline Square, .170" HD trimmer line and cut your own tines, slightly longer, with the mower raised higher. This will work much better.

    Bob Stahnke. I live in northern Illinois too.. I usually dethatch as soon as the last frost is gone and spring is starting. That is usually in mid April lately. You will be shocked to see how much dead grass comes out of your lawn. It's almost soothing in a way to watch it all come out and open up your lawn. A few tips though. Make sure you have a lot of yard waste bags or something to get rid of the huge amount of grass.. Once you dethatch you should throw down a little grass seed to help fill in any bare spots, then you should get some fertilizer with crabgrass inhibitors (make sure it's OK to use with grass seed). The issue is, that with the new open lawn weeds or crabgrass could sprout up while the grass is growing back and filling in again. Also do not forget to water the grass while it's filling back in. I promise you will love the end results if you do it right. Green fluffy grass, rather then yellow/green packed down grass.

    if you avoid chemicals in your yard, the soil bacteria build up and they will eat the dead grass. I still thatch my yard once a year, but it barely needs it. I let nature do the rest.

    Thatching is something craftsmen do to houses- making a roof from Straw or reeds. DEthatching is what you are doing to your lawn.

    Don't you want to attached the bag so you don't have to rake all that dead grass?

    The de-thatching blade is flat, therefore wouldn't create a vacuum effect under the deck and push the dead material into the bag, so the bag is just dead weight... :)

    twocvbloke No it's not flat .. it's like a regular blade but with a style variety of 'rakes' attached to the blade. Yes, you certainly can catch the thatch in your grass catcher bag.

    Basically lazy mulch mowing is killing our yards. That thatch creates a water, fertilizer and oxygen barrier that harms the soil.

    Nothing wrong with mulching, as it recycles nitrogen and helps with water retention in soil in hot areas (initially). Just be prepared to dethatch more often to get rid of it once it's used up.

  • @markweatherford9233

    There are many different types of mowers that have different starting methods, so yes, some magically will crank. Especially while loosening the blade and you are manually cranking the engine, hence the need to unplug the spark plug. Warm/hot engines can magically refire when tilted to their sides due to old gaskets leaking fuel. New mowers have a lot of safety built into them, but its best to pull the plug and have a better blade bracket than a small piece of wood that will get kicked out.

    Mark You're another one of those who don't realize what happens to a lawn mower when you release the throttle. It fails to run even though it was already spinning hundreds of RPMs.

    I've done it this over 25+ yards every year since 2011. You just gotta know what you're doing. Move fast don't stop and lift mower high when turning around. And like he said set tines just off the pavement. But I don't know about hot season grass. I'm in Canada so it's all cool season grass.
