Detailed and Complete reassembling of Stihl Chainsaw (MS390)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Reassembling of a MS 390 Stihl Chainsaw in detail, step by step.
This video might help those who are about to DISASSEMBLE their saw as well, as I'm going into depth of some "tricky" areas.
Overhauling the motor is NOT part of my video, you will find a few good ones here on youtube.
As with any machine, being through and always checking the assembled parts before continuing is essential for a smooth work flow and successful rebuild.

You are a star!!! So helpful! I had a stroke after dismantling my saw and then 2 years later tried to put it together. Could not have done it without your video!! THANX!!!!!!
Dude, thank you so much for your technique to extract the chain guide stude. It saved me to extract mine, when rebuilding an MS 290. I took the liberty of making a little video on the stud, using your technique. Because I only found it in your video by chance. thank you from France!
Jens, Props to you man. I have owned my MS310 for about 22 years, recently ‘pulled’ the spark plug end off accidentally. By following your disassembly/assembly videos I have achieved so much, and really learned about my saw(how difficult this model is to replace ignition module/coil😏). There was plenty of detail, too:like how to use paper to set the flywheel gap from coil. Reassembly went so much better while watching the routing of spark plug wire/ground wires. And with the tear down I was able to actually clean the saw which now looks like a new saw with faded covers. Thanks again for taking the time to do the MS310 videos. Best wishes!
This video was very useful. Answered my questions, that the local Stihl shop wouldn't. Thank you ever so much Mr. Schnabel.
Best reassembly video out there. Took my 290 apart 6 months ago. Couldn't have got it back together without your help. Thanks!!!
Jens, I don't usually comment on youtube but this video really saved my bacon. I tore apart my ms310 in October with the intention of rebuilding it as a 390, then got busy for five months. Without your video it would have taken a very long time to rebuild that project. Thanks from British Columbia.
I know it's 2021 but I never had this issue to tackle before. Best F'n step by step video on this ever. I dismantled the saw and had to wait a few days for the engine to come and was feeling like holy crap looking at all the parts and trying to remember them. The overwhelming feeling of all the parts made me want to sweep them into the garbage and go buy a new saw.. Used you on your video in my shop to rebuild mine and got the same results you did, only maybe plus a few well chosen cuss words. Thank you.
I took apart my MS290: had to replace the piston & rings. I used your video to put the chainsaw back together (along with pictures and notes I took). Very helpful. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this. Thanks again!
Thanks for the help , I am putting my MS 310 back together now.
Subscribed right now. Major respect thank you soooooo much. There are so many tear down and piston replacement videos on youtube but nobody ever has the thought to just leave the camera on as they take it apart or put it back together. Your a saint!
I just finished rebuilding my MS390 and I would not have been able to complete the job without your excellent instructions. A sincere thank you for taking the time to make this video. Excellent job!!
why cant more people put together excellent videos like this! keep it up
Thank you Jens, I changed the motor in my Ms310 and it fired right up. Great video
Excellent step-by-step video, thanks for making it. I took my saw apart a month ago, I would have never gotten it back together without a little help! Great job!
Excellent video, very precise and clear presentation, I've an old MS 310, very similar construction, you'll be a great help to me in getting this saw fixed and back together, thank you so much!
Thanks for the post it really helped me rebuild my ms290.
thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful step by step video.

Excellent. You're very welcome.
Excellent video. Thank you
Awesome, this was by far the best video. I took my computer to my work bench and followed your instructions step by step. I had the same results, works perfect! Thank you. You saved me a ton of cash!
Thanks Jens . this is a brilliant video and you are a generous man to share it. my 390 is back in one piece thanks to your excellent guidance.
Thank you very much for the time you took making and posting this. Its exactly what im looking for for reassempling a MS-290. "Grommet" is the word your looking for when referring to the rubber piece that seals the ignition coil wires. Also you're supposed to pull up on the bar while tightening it.
Well done Jens! Very informative and some good tips. Just finished my conversion of a 310 into a 390 project!
Jens, thanks so much for this very excellent and detailed video. I successfully changed the cylinder on my 290 watching it. Thanks again! Roger
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to do it. You should be a teacher. Very informative.
thank you, ive looked at a few vids for working on my stihl 290 and this is the best one by far!
Great video. I have the 039. Build is exactly the same. I would not have been able to do it without your guidance. Thanks Jens!
Excellent Video! Thank you for taking the time to make it!.
Thanks a million for making this video very helpful and educational 👍🏽👍🏽
Your video is very well done in explaining in detail what goes where. The camera work is excellent. You take the time to setup the camera or move out of the way for the viewer to get a look at what is being done. That along with great explanations of what is being done makes a great video. Thank you. UPDATE: Back watching it again as it has so much useful information.
Excellent video......Great job ....very detailed and really helpful.....Thank you..
Thank you so much, it helped me a lot. The service manual is no very clear and, thanks to your video, I was able to rebuild my chainsaw. Encore merci :-).
thanks, with your help I just rebuilt my old 039 for around 70€ of spare parts (spy, bearings, membranes, gaskets, etc)
Great job - thanks for producing such a great video
Dude ur a bad ACT big thanks. Great video!!! Well done !!
Great video, thanks a lot, helped me rebuild a MS390 that had a bad piston. Everything is complete except for the circlip at 48:30 in your video. Can't get it to lock into place. Tried 7 or 8 times before the clip was lost. Won't lock into groove, tried pushing down with a screwdriver and a small socket. Went ahead and started the saw, started on the second pull and runs great.
Great video Jens! Nice work.
great video to reassemble to
Thanks for the time to make this very informative video. One thing I would not suggest, is to start a newly rebuilt saw, and after 15 or 20 seconds, pin it wide open, just to check for oil flow from the chain. You need to let it "break in" a little first, or at least warm up. Also, the carb needs to be properly adjusted, to make sure you are not running too lean and to make sure you are not over revving it.
This video helped alot for my ms310
thanks for taking the time to make this video, its very informative . top job ;o)
Hi Jens. Great video. Found that it is much easier to fit that powerful clutch spring back on, before you connect the clutch drum brake. Removes risk of a hernia!
Thanks so much for the video. Very well done SIR!👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻️
Excellent work on that saw Jens.
It's easier to install the pulse hose if you hook it to the engine first then pull it through the hole in the handle with a hemostat after lubricating the end of the hose with soap or silicone.
Great vid! Thanks Jens!

You're welcome.
Nice video... very well done 👍🏽👍🏽
Best video I have watched on youtube concerning chainsaws. ps... I hate my ms290. I have to much gas in the cylinder. It looks like there is spark, but it will not even fire more than one time even after sitting all night to dry out. Great video though.
I think Stihl uses Locktite green on that rear bolt. I tried everything to remove that rear bolt but ended up welding the nut to the bar stud and then turned it out. I am sure the heat from the welding helped, but I got it out and replaced the bar stud and the nut. When I put it back in I put oil on it, so I could get it out in the future. If it ever loosens up I tighten it back. It will not come out, so I wonder why Stihl puts such a strong sealant on it. It may loosen over time but a pair of vise grips will easily retighten it. I spent several hours trying to get it out before I welded a bar nut on the end of it. Bar studs and bar nuts are cheap, compared to elbow grease and skinned knuckles.
Thank you! Sincerely JBV
Danke Jens!
Great video. Demystifies the "clam shell" rebuild. MS390/039 are great saws that the "Pro" crowd gives little credit. In the last steps I noticed that you could benefit from a muffler modification. A few extra holes in the muffler body and open the deflector will let it breath. This simple procedure in conjunction of retuning the carb will really wake up performance.

Andrew, thanks very much for your feedback. Haha! Never crossed my mind - "putting a turbo on the machine". And yes, it is a really good saw, even with it's unmodified muffler.

+Jens Schnabel I have an MS390 that leaks oil like a banshee and has been abused.I will buy a new engine housing from Germany and follow your video in my new shop. I like to re-engineer abandoned machines. Call it a Don Quixote complex. Wish you could join me for a nice German meal here in Oregon when it gets cold. Consider it a formal invite. My father is Swiss German and we have a lot of wood to cut.Thanks-- Erickson
Fantastic I've always been a handyman and I finally decided to fix my O29 stihl after it was sitting for over 6-years I cleaned out the gas tank and bought a new carb, filters and hoses and looked up your site on u-tube and you were very detailed that I had no problem rebuliding it, except for one issue I don't think I tighten the flywheel tight enough, and when I started it the flywheel snapped the bulit in dog I am not sure if I should spend the money on a new one, becouse I am not sure if it is something more serious, does anyone have a comment on this issue
Thanks you so much
Great video. I have the same saw & im installing a new carb. Is there a base setting I can set the idle screws to pls?? Thank you
Great video!! would you recomend locktite on the bar stud when reinstalling?? also why did you replace your housing??? Thanks!!
Thank you for the tip to remove the guard bolt that goes into the block housing. I originally tried jamming the two nuts together, but this stripped the bolt as you warned others- I should have watched your video first. I have owned a couple Stihl saws and have had no problem starting. But the last two have ended up scoring the piston, do you think it is the ethonal mixture or do I need to add more oil to the gas mixture,- any ideas?
Thanks
i had isues puling a part stihl 029, that stud is 2 part stud on that model
👍
I noticed your MS390 has no compression switch for easier starting. thats unusual, what year is this saw..? Good Video.
Ive on only worked on huskys, but in my experience if you dont use the clips to retain the wires properly they can get sucked into the flywheel and destroyed
nice job but no lock tight on the screws
How do you put that ground wire below the intake? It kinda gets squeezed between carburetor and that intake ring. I imagine that this could create tiny air gap.
@redseriesinoil

Start at about 10:50 minutes into the video and you'll see that both wires, the short circuit and ground are going through a small rubber seal or rubber ring. Both these wires need to go through that ring. At 11:15 I briefly grab onto those cables (hanging off to the right top of the machine). Then I put the back cover on and here it is important to make sure those wires are in front of that cover as I say the cover needs to go behind these wires. At 12:15 you can see how they come out of that small opening to the lower left. At 13:20 you can see that there are 2 holes in the handle housing, the intake-boot hole and one below it. I refer to it as "little seal" that's the rubber ring holding both cables, short circuit and ground, which needs to go in that smaller hole. At 14:30 I pull the cables into place and pop the rubber ring into that hole. From there you simply keep those wires below the carburetor and feed them to the left, they should not interfere with any of the carburetor assembly. At 27:55 I attach those cables, ground and short circuit. You can see that I didn't pay attention and looped the wire behind the left carburetor bolt, so I have to loop it back around 28:30, I could have also detached the connector and readjusted it that way, of course. And that's pretty much it. I hope it helped to solve your problem.

Jens Schnabel Thank`s mate for so detailed response! I just kept looking at this orange housing and realised that there is a kind of groove just below intake where you can push in this yellow-green wire. Just couldn`t imagine that this wire needs to be twisted so severly. The second thing where I was strugling was this bloody handbrake spring. After 20 minutes of intensive sweating with no success I took off that clutch drum and it allowed the brake band to shrink more and I finally managed to put the bloody spring on! This was my first time when I took my chainsaw apart and succesfully assembled it back together. And your video helped alot!

@@redseriesinoil I had problems in this are so your video and comments are very helpful. Thank you.
Hi. The new housing is an OEM one or chinese one. Thank you.
Greetings! It appears you did not grease the needle bearing assembly that goes inside the sprocket bore and rides on the right (as viewed from the operator's position) end of the crankshaft. Stihl has a sprocket grease in a small plastic tube.
Good video I used the video to put my ms 290 back together bought a short block same problem any ideas burning piston on exhaust side ran for about 10 minutes . 50:1 fuel mixture .Dont see anywhere to attach picture pm me I will send picture chain saw got real hot .

Too lean. Either you have an air leak or you didn't adjust your carb correctly. The air leak can be impulse line, carb boot or crank seals. Since it's only 10 minutes that means it was very lean. You should hear that. Look for other tuning videos.
Wow! That poor clutch just got fried to a crisp.
The one thing I needed to see and it wasn't touched...lol. Oh well, I liked the video, otherwise!
awesome video/ I copied as built mine!. last steps didn't show :>( ....I wanted see close -up of the brake end caps/and handle bar covers.. u left on table .. lol. if only gets a cap on the brake bushing,i think its a poor design .
can you do a 028 WB ;)

Yep I got to the intake boot part just Brand new MS290 engine Bought everything new Then couldn’t get that damn clamp on after a hour I took a sledgehammer to This damn thing Threw it out the shop Then Ran it over with my forklift and I’m on my way to Lowe’s get a DeWalt 40V Electric saw Piss on these small Hard to get into spaces not gonna have this problem again
14:30 it's difficult to focus on the chainsaw with THOSE HUGE GUNS in the way!
and it is not good to work at higher revs and the brake is on a high friction and heats and smoking at you now
Just look at what these people have done to these chainsaws. Try dismantling a homelite xl-12 or ANY vintage saw. Either they love paying a room full of engineers to just see how bad they can F..... up a saw or the idea is to STOP or DISCOURAGE their loyal customers from working on their own saws that they paid an arm and a leg for.
first IDIOT I ever seen crank a saw with the bar scabbard on it..LMAO
