its actually explained that the mask Destro wears in the old cartoon is not metal, at least not metal as we might understand it, rather its a kind of flexible metal, i forget most of the old excuses but they were there...

Alot of them were back then. Dungeons and Dragons "Dragons Graveyard" episode. Gargoyles. Might Orbots. Some episodes of Transformers and more.

Arthur Burghardt and his incredible acting/voice as Destro are legendary.

When I first saw this episode I was completely shocked to learn that Destro and Lady Jaye were related and if Destro had known that early on he would have been shocked to learn that a member of his family became something he dispises and he and his family would probably consider Lady Jaye a traitor to they're family and I even wonder if Lady Jaye's family knew of they're history and probably did everything to make sure they're daughter didn't follow that dark path which is probably what happened as at the end of this episode Lady Jaye showed she had no knowledge of her families history and that she and Destro were related.

Destro didn't even care that it was Baroness...He shoots them some B.S. and nails 'em anyway.....Dudes sure got alot of hot action back in those days.....especially in GI Joe.....

A fucking cartoon with dialogue this sophisticated...

I absolutely love Arthur Burghardt's performance but at the same time I did like the subsequent retconned origin story of his ancestor the original James McCullen being an arms dealer that sold weapons to both sides of a war and when he got caught Man in the iron mask time. Still that voice of his is commanding

Yeah, both origins for the reason the Clan McCullen does what it does are great for sure.

"Baroness is nothing to me." Proceeds to ruin a Cobra plan because he didn't like it involved the Baroness seducing a rich tycoon.

Yes, it was in the War of the Roses iirc and his family turned it into a badge of honor. That's the much cooler comic version or the origins.

They still show this cartoon super late at night. Watching it now as an adult, there are some things that stick out: -I have no idea how Cobra ever loses, or what "ruling the world" would actually do for them. They have absurdly good technology, way better than anything GI Joe has. They should just become their own nation like the machines from the Matrix & eventually force the world to succumb to them. -This show is a bit more adult themed than I remember. Maybe some of the later episodes lighten up, but even in the movie, it's some pretty serious stuff. -My favorite scene is when the Joe's end up having their base destroyed & have to take refuge on an aircraft carrier, where the CO keeps insisting that it's no place for a woman to Lady Jaye, who is just standing there. She eventually gets irritated and Hawk has to straighten out the CO over it. It's just funny how that would be declared "woke" today, but 30 years ago, no one seemed to care.

"They should just become their own nation" - In the comics, they did. They manipulated G.I. Joe into detonating a massive amount of munitions underwater (basically the equivalent of a bunker buster, though the term hadn't become common, and in this case it was literal because the Joes were trying to destroy a literal bunker that house machinery which was killing marine life). Detonating the explosives where they did triggered a fault line, which raised a land mass to the surface. Cobra was waiting to land troops upon it and obtained diplomatic recognition for their new nation. Of course, they then almost immediately set into a civil wart against themselves, removing their advantage.

they had great writers for cartoon plots back in the 80's. I never realized how complex GI Joe was until I got older. All the narratives and current affairs of that era they would include in each episode...whole lot of adult humor too.

G.I. Joe in particular had some intricate and quite well done plots. I particularly like the two parter with Shipwreck where Cobra brainwashed him and gave him a Synthoid family.

I find Cobra Commander to be a particularly sympathetic character (for a sociopath). Either his underlings f**k up his deep-laid plans through mple incompetence, or -- if a plan looks like it's on the verge of success -- his allies take over the operation by force to claim the reputation and riches it will produce -- and f**k it up in the process, due to disunity. Poor CC experiences some serious management problems.

Most of the background stories and settings for Gi Joe were created by Marvel's writers, the cartoons adapted them and added some new elements, the same happened with Transformers.

Lol do you remember the "viper" episode where they were paranoid about the viper. Turned out to be a window wiper coming to "vipe the Windows"

I never realized as a kid how weird it is that the mouth of Destro's mask moves perfectly in sync with his speaking.

His origin story is that one of his ancestors was caught selling to both sides of the English Civil War and Cromwell's men forced him to wear a mask of Beryllium steel. I am not sure why the show changed it to witchcraft, maybe it was make it easier for kids to understand.

Well he doesn't immediatley appears in the comic books but yeah that is his true origin he is an awesome character imo Destro, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and Zartan were the only good parts in Rise of Cobra imo

The hinges around destros mouth should squeak when he talks. Otherwise, his face is just painted grey.

Kids are often a lot better at that than adults think. Shows that aren't too simplified are the best, actually, one reason I think I also liked this show as a kid.

Wonder if he played some Cold Slither on the old turn table to turn up the romantic atmosphere.

I didnt hear the Scottish accent until recently. I thought they shoe horned that in the live action. Now watching it now I can hear it or recognize it.

The music when the flashback begins - love it. Transformers shares the soundtrack as well.

The toy line and comics confirm this. The 2009 live action film had Destro's ancestor, James McCullen IX punished by France for attempting to sell weapons to them and England. As punishment for the deed and to set an example against those who try to overthrow the monarchy, the French king condemned him to wear a red hot iron mask for the rest of his life. Destro kept the iron mask as a reminder to be careful in playing both sides without being caught.

This much more better than that one scary-ass scene with ultra-hot iron mask in The Rise of Cobra

"Destro dating carmen-sandiego well-done cobra-la will be proud of you".

Other than "knowing is half the battle", G.I. Joe also taught me that dressing up like a spy is the best disguise.
