Destiny 2 Lore - Lightfall collector's edition Lore, What Caiatl revealed about Calus's true nature!

Ойындар

Destiny 2 Lore from the Lightfall collector's edition tells us about Caiatl's childhood and what she learned from having Emperor Calus as a father. We learn about the origin of Caiatl's name and how it might be linked to the Hive word "Aiat", we learn about how Cabal pregnancy works and we discovered information about the OXA machine that might relate to an ancient Hive character called Taox.

Hard to tell, though Cabal do seem to live for centuries if not millenia. Mind you, this is without the Traveler’s intervention like in the case of Humanity or The Eliksni. In the same book, it describes when Cabal get old enough, they start to ossify, becoming almost like statues. Instead of growing thinner, wrinklier, and frailer. So I’m guessing that aging process is tied to their longevity. Also on Torobatl there are species of land whales that the Leviathan is modeled after. Keep in mind whales, live on in the seas, since the ocean water supports their massive weight. Considering the size of the Cabal and these whales, Torobatl maybe is more oxygen rich then Earth. Hence why we see most Cabal like Ghaul or Caiatl wearing what appears to be rebreathers. Though considering Cabal have cloning capabilities, I wouldn’t put it past them having genetic engineering as well.

Personally as an evolutionary biologist major, this was my favorite simply because the Cabal breeding system being a mix of marsupial and pipefish-style reproductive habits was just so cool to me. I have no idea if other species on their planet had the same system- I mean, they probably did, if they shared a common ancestor with some of them- but the fact that the taxing nature of gestation and childrearing is split between the males and females so evenly means that they probably had an advantage over species that didn't do such a thing, as their males and females had an equal amount of investment in the rearing and thus were able to recover quicker for battle. Eggs are energetically costly to produce and fetuses are even more costly to rear, so the female passing them over for the male to deal with after fertilization/a bit of gestation for him to carry and breastfeed means that said cost is split more evenly than if one sex alone dealt with all of the hustle. Of course, there runs the risk of him rejecting the offspring for those of a stronger female, as mentioned, so the mother must guard the father and the young, but it gives the male a reproductive advantage in that he can simply choose a better partner if his is insufficient- and, of course, the females must do a better job at proving their fitness. Such a thing would lead to selection for bigger, stronger females, who likely want big, strong males to carry more of their young, which is how we get such a large, warlike race like the Cabal. It's a pretty fantastic piece of speculative biology that makes them at once far more fearsome and yet far more relatable in my eyes

I think a case where one sex bears and the other protects is probably best for reproduction and survival. Instead of a jack-of-all-trades approach, having each sex hyper-specialized in their roles I think would lead to greater success from a war standpoint. Calus saying he wants "nothing" reminds me a lot of the Witness saying "No more life, no more death." Even if he wasn't fully conscious of it at the time, I feel like Calus wanted what the Witness would eventually offer to him. That certain darkness that could only be exemplified through destruction. And if anything I feel like all the Witness ever did was give him the opportunity to let that side of him out, just enough to set him down the path he eventually took.

This tracks well with the way Rhulk turned out in the lore. These individuals agree with the Witness not because the Witness is inherently right, or due to fear or awe (though to say those arent factors would be remise) but because they are each inherently broken in some way and are drawn to the appeal of a meaning, a purpose that could justify their existence. This is why Guardians were likely so susceptible in other timelines, especially during the Red War, because they lacked a clear understanding of their purpose in absence of the Light. Its why the The Witness' line in the launch trailer 'you lack purpose' is a perfect line, because it exemplifies everything about the Witness that draws people to it.

Here's another question, do you really think the Witness wants to destroy all life in the galaxy, or do you think its ultimate goal is to destroy the 4th and 5th rule of the flower game, the light and dark?

In that language, the "tl" denotes a glottal stop, not an "L" sound as most users of Western Euro languages would expect. This is the same language that gave us words like xocolatl, the root for chocolate, and Quetzalcoatl and Axolotl. Personally to me, Calus is really tragic with this context. He's a man who has struggled to trully feel anything his entire life. Putting on a facade of happiness and opulence when in actuality he's hollow and emotionalless. And finally when he found something to make him feel. He fucked it up. And pushed it away. I don't think calus is inherently bad or evil or only cares for himself. I think he's just a deeply misguided person. Who only really wanted to feel something, other than emptiness.

Well I think Calus is both seriously misguided and evil. Both can be true. Many times the misguided turn to fully evil, willingly rejecting a better path or advice. This is Calus. Learning more about his past, one can understand how he made the choices he did. Yet at the same time, he made often rejected and lashed out at those trying to genuinely love and help him. A sad fact of reality, is that many of those horrifically abused will turn into horrific abusers themselves. It takes a great deal of personal humility, resolve, compassion, and control to be one to break free from that.

I really like to think that there is a cabal martial art practiced by females of the species, akin to Sumo, that comes from ancient, primal, disputes over territory and mates. Imagine two massive tusked cabal hauling forward, with speed you didn't think possible from a being so large, colliding against each other. One grips her opponent's tusks in each hand, defending her neck, a perilous position. Meanwhile, the other continues her assault, trying to find a solid grip on her rival's waist. They appear locked in place, both grunting, their thick hides rolling with each thrash of effort, one might compare how they look, to two kodiak bears. Suddenly, the aggressor's hands find purchase. She heaves her hulking opponent skyward and shrugs her weight to the side in a throw. Both Cabal land in the dirt. The defender goes limp, her defensive strategy turned into two swords pointed right at her by the aggressor's throw, and plunged deep into her neck under the weight of her falling opponent. The victor stands and bellows triumph to a group of onlooking males. She has proven herself.

As a person currently learning the ways in which human anatomy works with this kind of stuff, it actually tracks pretty well with how bungie have expanded on the Cabal. There's a lot of examples in nature where gender and sex determination aren't nearly as clear cut as human biology, notably Clownfish, sea horses, and reptiles in general. To imagine a species where the egg is released, and then nursed in the male provides a great deal of insight into how deep Bungie think when writing this lore. Id imagine that the only reason cabal females are considered such is due to them producing the eggs, but by almost any other standard they would be more physiologically comparable to human males. Its always best to remember evolution takes no single path to reach an end point, it just appears that way because one happened to outcompete the rest in this scenario.

While this is beside the main topic, your example of matching words in English and French isn't about the English stealing it from the French, it's actually the French bringing it into English. When William the Conqueror conquered England, many French words heavily impacted the English language as French was the official language, specifically among the nobility. Same with Scandinavian words that became part of the language during the Viking raids and Danelaw.

@@aidenfanucci9523 while you're not wrong as Old English dialects and grammar as a whole was Germanic, Kronosx7 is also not completely wrong. Latin was prominent in England as well, primarily as a language of learning and the clergy. The drastic shift came during the reign of Alfred thr Great when he ordered for sermons to be performed in English so that the common folk can understand the prayers, etc. Needless to say it was a very controversial decision. Regardless, due to the importance of Latin prior to this, it was quite common for the monarchy, mobility and clergy to learn Latin. Due to the nature of language it is only natural for some words to be adapted into standard vocabulary of English itself. It most certainly wouldn't be as widespread as French but you may still find words that originated in Latin.

On the topic of Cabal 'Years': One of the ideas about the Leviathan is that the miniature binary stars above the Leviathan are a nostalgic representation of Torobatl's system for the exiled emperor. If this is correct, then it would also basically show why Cabal years are so long. You see, for a planet in a binary star system to habitable to a fairly humanoid species such as the Cabal (in contrast to to housing just very hardly microbes or the likes), it needs to present a decently stable temperature for a proper biosphere to develop. And for this, in that binary system, it has only two options: a) "S-type": Orbit a single of the binary stars, which will be quite hot but also at least stable (a stable hot temperature is better for life as we can imagine it than extreme temperature fluctuations). For this, the stars need to be quite a ways away from each other however - which is physically possible, but not represented in that binary system atop the Leviathan. b) "P-type": Orbit around both binary stars at once, basically acting as if its just one large star. For this to be physically stable, the P-type planet needs to orbit in a very, very long distance as it needs to be far enough so the two stars orbiting each other doesn't interfere with the gravity of the planet. And boom - there is the wide orbit, and why Cabal years are so long. At least one option that ties back to an old theory about the Leviathan. It's also entirely possible Torobatl is just a planet far away from a single host star. It's also possible Cabal years aren't that long but they just develop quickly - but as per their incredibly long lifespans, this seems very unlikely. Also this video is incredible to listen to as an Astrobiologist. Bungie has put incredibly care into their species design and it shows.

One thing I learned recently about sex, is that the reason we know the male sea-horse is the one that gives birth (and we didn't just accidentally call it the male one when first discovered) is that male and female are biologically determined by the size of one's gamete (the egg) In humans, the men are men because our gamete (sperm) are drastically smaller than a woman's ovum. Edit: Mixed up zygote with gamete

  • @DeusExAngelo

    @DeusExAngelo

    Жыл бұрын

Well the male sea horse giving birth is very different from how most mammals let alone humans give birth. To my understanding at least . The female still produces the un-fertilized egg cells which he stores in a brood pouch. Meanwhile he still produces the sperm cells that seek out and fertilize the eggs. But this time, the sperm need to travel far less of a distance and have more options. In the same manner that sperm cells do in other animals. I think the reason why can also tell if a sea horse is male or female is because they operate on the XY and XX chromosome system found on almost all multicellular life on earth. The Cabal from the sounds of it, have a sort of mixed system between a sea horse and a human. Where the male impregnates the female, who carry the fetal young til they become an infant. Whereby they are deposited into a male’s brood pouch for nursing.

Taox follows shortly after and brings warning of the Witness and rallies that new civilisation to try and fight it. They lose the fight, the traveler is forced to flee, and Taox flees with it. In all the stories both Taox and the Traveler get away, except for one; the Collapse. I can't recall any mention of anything resembling a character that could be Taox interacting with humanity prior to the collapse. What if Taox was prevented from reaching earth to warn humanity of The Witness and this is why the Traveler couldnt flee this time? It was forced to make a last stand to push back the against The Witness, and its last act was to create the ghosts to raise guardians to try to not only protect itself, but to survive and try to find Taox who holds the key to defeating the Witness? I think Taox is the Light's version of The Witness. Probably a long shot but thats where i'm at with the crackpot theories at the moment.

It would make sense because Calus wished someone to love, but What he got is someone who would ultimately be unable to love him back. So glad you really went into the fun ways that Cabal anatomy and culture appear. I have been rolling my eyes at the people getting weirded or grossed out about Calus/male Cabal are the gestators and weaners of their infants, as if that is weird at best (it isnt, as you have shown, nature makes all sorts of configurations for creating babies) and gross at worst. Its probably gross for some people because what - the idea of males being pregnant is yuck? if Calus was gendered as traditionally female, no one would bat an eye at that very first line. Instead we had people going 'time for the eye bleach' and all that silly garbage. Bungie has been doing some excellent world building and creating universes that show us that life can live in beautifully diverse configurations. I have enjoyed all the creativity they have given us so far. Its true Star Trek stuff. Also - the act of expelling his pouches (a very visceral analogue of abortion, mind) was so shocking to me, how petty he was to simply expel his children because of his selfish desire to be loved. It also portrays that he actually has no parental instincts and his role as child bearer merely satisfies his selfish need to be loved/wanted - makes me genuinely curious as to what happened to Caiatl's mother. The entire book is incredibly excellent at creating a genuinely compelling villain. His motivations are so simple yet complex - fuelled purely by his own petty selfishness, but expanded by that selfishness being all consuming. God Bungo - I can't wait to do literary analyses of these. Its like going back to uni, but actually having fun with my assessments.

No, a young Ghaul was found by the Consul. He was abandoned elsewhere.

One one hand Ghaul is an albino small statured Cabal so he could be suffering from birth defects from something like early pouch removal and Calus wife had to completly disown her children because Calus wouldn't allow bastard heirs to his empire. On the other we have no evidence positively confirming or hinting towards Ghaul being Calus son. We also don't know if the ages check out or not. So it seems possible since nothing disproves it there is also nothing to prove. So possible but maybe not probable.

Also don't forget they aren't human. A horse foal cal be up and running around in an hour, because they gestate faster and are more mature when they are born. This is also a possibility for cabal

I love this analysis and the corresponding lore not just for the reasons you pointed out, but also because it truly does emphasize diversity and a rejection of common definitions of normality (what you pointed out likewise). The Destiny lore is brilliant.
