Destiny 2 Lore - A Fallen Pirate saw Nezarec's face. Then his nightmares wouldn't stop...

If you have a little money to spare: www.momcares.org/
Destiny 2's Lore and Story tells us about Nezarec and those he's haunted. The Root of Nightmares raid tells us about the Acolytes of Nezarec and about a Fallen pirate called Koraxis, who gazed upon Nezarec's face and stole one of his eyes. From that moment onward his nightmares wouldn't stop. His story should be a warning.

Just a quick note. You can donate to www.momcares.org/ if you're feeling generous. I hope you all understand. For me, a video comes with the monetary concerns that other channels don't have. Making hay out of a man's death at this time didn't feel right. Every small channel that makes a dedication should be where you put your attention here on KZread for the moment. For someone like me who covers things for my job I don't think it'd be respectful at current. We will make a video in time. For now, go out there and do some good in the commander's name.

As a lore appreciator, I am deeply saddened that Lance Reddick will never see through to the climax and end of Destiny's wonderful lore. I do not doubt that Lance himself has watched many of Byf's videos, appreciating the story-writing and the journey which has led us all up to this point. Rest among the stars commander, we will all join you soon in time. Per audacia ad astra. "_Do not grieve the dying star. I never care about celebrities, but Lance's passing absolutely make me stop what I was doing and sob. My husband cried too, he's been playing since day one of D1 and the loss destroyed him. To Lance, you will absolutely be missed. You brought life of every roll you were in, but the commitment and love you gave to your roll as Commander Zavala was profound. Your love for the Destiny community was unmatched. Not many communities can boost that one of their VAs plays the game the perform in just as religiously as the community, but we could. You were more than just a voice, you were one of of us. It is time for you to rest Commander. You have protected us for a long time...we can and will take care of everyone in your absence. You may be gone, but you will NEVER be forgotten. RIP Lance Reddick
Lance's death actually made me stop everything i was doing. I even paused the white noise i CONSTANTLY have on. Legit just stared in shock at my screen. Thoughts and prayers to the family of such an incredible voice actor, and may the light be with him forever.
That smile and expression on his face while holding the gjally is one of pure joy and "mom look how badass this is" 😊 he will be missed.. rest in peace commander 🌹

There was a cutscene in Lightfall's campaign where he yells at Calus that makes me wonder if the Witness also has connections to dreams/nightmares, and whether or not that played a role in Nezarec becoming a disciple. Cuz in that scene Calus clearly appears to "wake up" in a fervor after his conversation with them, indicating they were communicating in a dream or nightmare-scape
@boat378

That point in the campaign really stuck with me. Makes me think the Witness as we see it now is not its final form, especially since Calus in that cutscene is looking up.

A truly incredible talent with one of the most memorable voices in the last decade. Go with the light, Commander. & thank you.
I don't know if its connected but the line "It stared back." struck me as this was a name of a sword back in vanilla D2, with a lore passage that reads: "The Leviathan came to a halt before a wall of infinite void. It could go no further, as the navigation system had suffered a cataclysmic failure. The course that the conspirators had set crossed a space that simply didn't exist. I don't know how long we traveled. Years? Millennia? Time had ceased to have meaning as I wallowed in the despair of my exile. But this event shook me out of my stupor. At the edge of the universe, we had found something. No-we had found a nothing. From the seat of my observation chamber, I stared into the perfect void. Only I, a god, could understand what I witnessed. It was a thing greater than myself. And if such a thing exists, then I, too, can become more." Did Calus meet Nezarec first? Was he actually under the guides of Nezarec when working for the Witness? Rest in peace Lance, the Vanguard will miss your command.
the eye might be a 'backup,' a kind of extra phylactery from an already lich-like being, being put into a position where it might survive despite any efforts one might go to to destroy nezarec
Rest in peace commander, we’ll see you starside
Thank you for your words on Lance Reddick. He will be sorely missed.
RIP commander, thanks for giving us the guidance we needed. Edit: In the topic of the video. It's such a bummer how badly Nezarec was adapted in game. He's such an awesome cosmic horror entity and that was not portrait at all
Thank you Lance for all your joy you helped create. You will be missed by many.
Nezarec infecting and tormenting you using his objects and just beholding him reminds me a lot of fatalis from monster hunter. If you wear the cursed armor of fatalis you will slowly turn into a fatalis. I don't think we will turn into Nezarec but we might get Stockholm syndrome and eventually start worshipping him. Btw monster hunter lore is really cool
That pic of Lance holding a Gjallarhorn is everything. Rest in peace Commander.
I think the best case scenario is actually that that eye is one of the relics we recovered in the Season of Plunder.

the witness prob recovered all parts only things that were missing was the parts in plunder hence why he could not be revived until the traveler hit his beam which was witness plan B for nezarec
This story takes place in the reef, the magic tome uses crystals to try to purify a cursed object or to bind its power It might actually be some sort of awoken relic instead
A fallen captain looked at the head of Nezarec. This is what happened to his brain.

Koraxis' story definitely paid homage to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," especially that gauntlet lore reading.
OMG! I didn't know he just passed away. Oh, man. My heart goes out to his family.
Bound by flesh is probably why the book is so powerful and why the family continues with it
Nezerac being within our nightmares could be a way for the 3rd dark subclass nightmares to appear. We may have to fight him in our minds to gain control of fear. The powers themselves could be fear illusion, frenzy. Frenzy could allow enemies to deal friendly fire at reduced damage.

Gotta love Byf!
The commanders light will shine on as we push through this loss.
For real, if Nezarec is Destiny's version of Warframe's Man in the Wall, then I am SO HERE FOR THAT
Immediately before Seraph turned off and Lightfall went live, I spent the last few moments of online time sitting in the bridge of the H.E.L.M playing "one more light" as a throwaway gag (get it? Lightfall? Who cares if one more light goes out? Get it?). It wasn't meant to be prophetic. Another guardian back to the traveler. Another lost light that lit one thousand more. Who cares if one more light goes out? Well, we do.
Man, the first thing that I remembered from the "Rap tap tap" was a quest in Warframe like YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Rest easy, Commander. We fight on.
Lance was with us since the very very beginning. When the magic of destiny 1 was still fresh he was the leader. He is the foundation of destiny and this is a huge loss. I wonder what they will do with Zavala moving forward.
Lance was a legend and a really hope budgie do something in game to honor him aswell
"Rap tap tap" is a reference to the man in the wall from Warframe. An eldritch being from the void.
Rest in peace, Commander.
A friend of mine and myself write Destiny stories in our spare time. So we're thinking of doing a few chapters in Lance Reddick's honor
When you make the Lance Reddick video, at the beginning or end have a compilation of all his videos and such. I think it'd be a nice touch.
Another way to interpret Trepidation is "A fear of what's to come".
Appreciate the explanation on the Zavala video, think that's a respectful way to go about it. Not to say that the people who made video tributes to Lance and Zavala were disrespectful for doing so, though-- I know for many that was probably a way of expressing their grief and gratitude. As for the book that Koraxis was using, I don't think it was actually Of Hated Nezarec. Since it was written in a foreign tongue, it was likely human language, yes, but I'd actually suspect a book on Awoken magics rather than one of rituals of Nezarec. The Fallen had long since interacted with the Awoken, and unless my memory of the timeline is just terrible some had already started following Mara Sov as the Little Kell, meaning that there would have been ways to get their hands on that kind of book. The use of a charged crystal only further improves that likelihood in my mind, especially since it seems like the kinds of darkness Awoken magic specializes in warding off are of a different nature than Nezarec's psionic and resonant abilities, making it unlikely to have worked even if the spell was completed properly.
Nezarec is the Voldemort of the Destiny universe.
Classy as ever my man.
Thinking about it, something that came to my mind after reading the lore of the Raid armor pieces myself, that Bungie should have went so far in gameplay alone that when you wear the armor you get to hear from time to time Nezarecs whispers no matter where you are. It would be a good detail to have given by how the lore makes it sound that just having anything related to him in your posession, leaning into the concept that no matter what he will never be truly gone.
You know your boundaries and I respect that. So for now we will wait, until all is settled down. On a more lighter note just to lift up the mood, can we do a lore about a bunch of Guardians holding a dance off and actually map out a whole Cabal Communications Network, after the Zavala Lore of course?
I love how nezarek just riffs off batmans line from batman vs super dark knight returns ...".I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember, my hand, at your throat, I want you to remember, the one man who beat you."
3:26 calling it now, second saga: The Dreams and Nightmares Saga
Plot twist, Mykel is the witness and all his disciples are just people he's picked up along the years to try and bring Nezerec back to this universe.
thank you Byf
It did say Mykel's version of the book had a lock of hair and blood in its pages. Maybe theses were Nezerac's and they imbued the book with a bit of his power.
Another damn good video!
