Destined for war with China? Graham Allison and Gen. David Petraeus (Ret)

China and the US are heading toward a war neither wants. That’s the sensational premise of Dr. Graham Allison’s new book, Destined for War?. The reason: Thucydides’s Trap, a deadly historical pattern of structural stress that results when rising powers challenge ruling ones. In the past 500 years, this pattern has occurred 16 times; in 12 of these cases, the outcome was war. Today, as an unstoppable China approaches an immovable America and both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump promise to make their countries “great again,” the case for war looks grim. Dr. Allison, who is director of Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and founding dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School, has served as Assistant Secretary of Defense and advised the secretaries of defense under every president from Reagan to Obama. Join him and legendary general, former CIA Director and Belfer Center senior fellow David Petraeus for a crucial conversation about what painful steps China and America must take to avoid disaster.

One point has to be clarified, "中国”or "Middle Kingdom" actually derives from Chinese philosophy in which Ancient Chinese believe universe has three layers, the upper is the sky天), the bottom is the Earth ( 地),human lives in the middle. It is not Chinacentrism as opposed to Eurocentrism at all. This is so broadly misinterpreted in the western intellectual .

Nigel1048 Ethnocentrism is generally seen as a bad thing because it leads to prejudice and hatred of other groups. Ethnocentrism is the belief that our own ethnic group is different from, and in some way superior to, other ethnic groups. This can lead us to actively despise other groups and, at times, to try to harm them. (www.enotes.com/homework-help/what-ethnocentrism-how-can-have-both-positive-440553)

Xiaorong Zou the Cold War was never over yet. It just changed shape or got a new title. The fall of communism in Russia did not end the conflict with us. It only ended the ideology. So if ideology changes, does policy necessarily?

@@landisgallagher Well luckily, we have our own America examples to answer your question. Did gaining our independence from Britain or ending slavery change policy that much for how we treated black folks? No. It took over 100 years for enslaved Africans to be even considered a whole person rather than just 3/5th’s human and then another 100 years for their descendants to have the right to vote and go to non-segregated schools. And yet we have audacity to think we can peacefully influence others.

They keep saying San Fran and LA as prospective NK targets. How about Seattle?! It is closer to NK, it's the home of Boeing and MS and Amazon, Bremerton, Fort Lewis, ect. Seattle is arguably a more important target strategically than SF or LA. They betray their Eastern Seaboard orientation here. Seattle does not even occur to them. Yet they are experts at issue west of Seattle...

Hello, May I share an Old Testament Verse with you from Daniel 7:14 "And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a Kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should SERVE Him; his dominion is an Everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." Also, can I share Isaiah 53:5 " But HE was WOUNDED For our TRANSGRESSIONS, he was BRUISED for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, & with His STRIPES we are HEALED." God the Father loves you so much that He sent Holy Sinless Jesus (His Holy Son) to earth to be born of a virgin. Then, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins. He was in the tomb for 3 days, then Father God raised Holy and Sinless Jesus Christ (Y'shua) to Life! He appeared to people & went back to Heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, & immoral persons sorcerers & idolaters & all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire & brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith & trust in Him today and please repent. Will you have a Real encounter with Holy Lord Jesus (Y'shua is His Hebrew Name) & stay in a Genuine relationship with Him daily please?

Would China be the economic power it now is if American corporations never outsourced so much manufacturing from America to China? If China's economic gravity is derived from its manufacturing base then why in hell doesn't the USA put in place a policy to revive and strengthen its manufacturing?

He is an incredibly wise men, nevertheless there are several points: 1) China has a 4% poverty rate, but their poverty rate is something absurd such as 4 dollars a day. And there is millions of super poor people in China. While a lot of them exit poverty, the same goverment also put them there and killed 3 times as many chiense people as Japan during ww2. 2) China is already economically integrated, but China does not want to play by international rules: trade deals are broken all the time as they don't allow foreign companies to play under the same set of rules; there is massive theft of technology from the west, América losses over 200 billion every year on that front. 3) China is bullying all of its neighbors and taking land from India, and the south China sea ILLEGALLY. 4) China is actively buying off governments in America and some in Europe to get key ports, airports, and infrastructure.

Historically, China never rose peacefully, whenever China was strong and rich, it tried to conquer neighboring countries for thousands of years. Luckily enough, Japan also rose to demolish traditional invader, conquerer, but China had America on China's side. But no more, Japan is very tightly knitted to the U.S. Japanese always learned from Historty while China never did.
