DESPERATE BRIDGE DEFENSE - OPERATION MARKET GARDEN - NIJMEGEN '44

Ойындар

We're back with a brand new inspired epic scenario from '44, during Operation Market Garden. Many of you heard the story of a bridge too far. Today simulate the Waalbrug bridge at Nijmegen (Netherlands), which essentially was one of the last bridges to be captured and became the reason why allied units at Arnhem couldn't be relieved and failed to capture the last bridge in time. The German desperate fierce resistance delayed the American paratroopers and British armored division efforts so much that the ultimate goal to cross the river Rhine failed.
This match was played in CMBN, a 1v1 turn-based game with my buddy RobZ. Despite the historical scenario, the result wasn't scripted. Even though it's one of the most realistic strategy games, during the gameplay, we discovered several broken mechanics that haven't been fixed since its release more than a decade ago. So I'd like to bring more awareness to them - smoking the bridge, shooting through multiple buildings, and inconsistent spotting just to name a few.
We still had a good time, as there are none of the games out there, not even MoW Assault Squad 2, that could reenact such a scenario at a realistic scale, including the city and bridges. The scenario includes several famous tanks, like the Tiger, Sherman, Jagdpanzer IV, StuG III, Panzer IV, Hummel, Firefly, and more!
That said if you enjoy then don't forget to leave a LIKE! This is Combat Mission BN

    What a blood bath! An excellent video!!! If there was anything I would dispute, it would be how Montgomery and the Supreme Command always labeled that Market-Garden was 90% successful. In reality, the Western Allies had carved out a nice pocket into Netherlands which went no where. The German Fifteenth Army still controlled the northern estuaries and the Rhine was still under German control. Monty's whole gamble in sucking all the gasoline from Patton in the south was to "hop across the Rhine and advance on Berlin". No Rhine crossing, no advance to Berlin. Three major mistakes which haunted Market-Garden. First, it took 3 days (or longer) to drop all of the paratroops. 82nd and 101st Airborne were pretty much dropped on the first day. The British 1st Para Division kept having their drops mis-managed and never dropped as a full division. Its units were chopped up and unable to relieve 2nd Para Bn at the Arnhem bridge. Second, XXX Corps advance route was pretty limited by the roads and the terrain issues. Third, the Western Allies assumed that "old men and boys" were the only opposition and somehow ignoring the battered II SS Panzer Corps (9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions with roughly 9,000 and 6,500 troops plus tanks, SPG, TD and supporting arms) was the ultimate folly. The fact that the airborne troops and the British armor still did well is a testament to the fine soldiers they were.

    Actually the British advance into Germany in 1945 took place from the Nijmegen area, so the area taken in Market Garden didn't lead nowhere. It lead into Germany. Market Garden also created a protective buffer zone in front of Antwerp. The Germans had to try and counter attack towards Antwerp through the Ardennes, which bogged them down. They couldn't attack directly from the Ruhr to Antwerp because Market Garden created that buffer zone. Market Garden didn't take any fuel from Patton. British fuel stocks were used. Patton had already stalled in the Lorraine two weeks before Market Garden was even green lit and had been failing to take Metz since September 6th. Market Garden wasn't given the go ahead until September 10th. American fuel stocks went on their Hurtgen Forest and Aachen attacks, which immediately followed Market Garden. In fact, US 1st Army actually began attacking into the Hurtgen Forest on September 19th just 2 days after Market Garden opened. These both failed. Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. 100km of German held ground was taken in just 3 days.

    @Lyndon CMP very insightful and from the perspective you laid out, very impressive. However my commentary from the perspective of Monty's war aims as the best option in leapfrogging the Rhine and capturing Berlin before the end of 1944 sways me in whether or not the operation was an operational or strategic failure. Did Nijmegen provide an excellent base to launch the spring offensives such as Operation Varsity? Yes. But as you imply, that was in 1945 or roughly six months after Market-Garden. Viewed solely from the perspective of crossing the Rhine in September of 1944 and perhaps capturing the Ruhr, Market-Garden was unsuccessful. But having said that from the seat of 21st Century arm chair perspectives, i will say that in the end, however it was achieved, final victory happened because the Western Allies kept on attacking and didn't let Market-Garden or the Hurtgen Forest or the Ardennes counteroffensive (Herbstnebel) stop them from recapturing Western Europe and defeating the German forces in the West. I appreciate your insight and commentary.

    Glad I subscribed been a War buff since the late 70’s From 1800’s - now but WW2 is my favorite because of people in charge and weapons and those who used them and died for their country. I wandered at times during Operation Market Garden if the British army would have used M1 Grand 🇺🇸 anti tank weapon and 105 mm two wheel gun . And 30 c machine guns I know they used the 50 c but things might have been a little different and ground forces didn’t stop too take a rest either. Hope you can do your version of In Harm’s Way PT Boat attacking 🇯🇵 ships. 👍👍👍👍👍

    After crossing this bridge the British waited another whole day to resume advance and were then halted at Elst, the next village down the road between Nijmegen and Arnhem. A fierce fight took place there to secure the whole south side of the Rhine.

  • @lyndoncmp5751

    @lyndoncmp5751

    That's not true. The Guards Armoured Division advanced around midday on the day they crossed it. 21st September. They didnt wait a day. Only 5 British tanks managed to get across the evening before (2 were damaged in the process) and their task was to secure the bridge and stop the Germans retaking it. Holding the bridge on the night of the 20th/21st was imperative for a proper advance on the 21st. The Guards Armoured Division had been split up over dozens of miles helping out the US 82nd Airborne and had to deviate from their main take because the 82nd were having problems, especially after the non arrival of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment on the 19th due to poor weather. The tanks didn't "wait", as falsely shown in A Bridge Too Far. They had to be recalled from miles away, then reassembled and rebriefed for the advance. The Guards Armoured Division had linked up with the 82nd Airborne on the morning of the 19th. The 82nd Airborne were supposed to have had the Nijmegen bridge captured and ready for the Guards Armoured Division to cross over on the 19th, but this didnt happen. Worse, the 82nd retreated out of Nijmegen on 18th and it then took all of the 19th and 20th to even get onto the bridge. As I said, German counter attacks elsewhere at Mook and Huemen forced the Guards Armoured Division to disperse, split up and give support to the 82nd here, there and everywhere.

    @@1918BARsam Its partly fair because the 82nd had the chance to take the Nijmegen bridge on day one when it was lightly defended but there was a mix up in command decision between Lindquist and Gavin. Most blame Lindquist for not moving on the bridge fast enough. The bridge was not taken by the 82nd. When the Guards Armoured Division of XXX Corps arrived on the 19th it was still in German hands. To be fair, British 1st Airborne didn't take the Arnhem bridge either. Only a small section of the north end. The Germans controlled 99% of Arnhem. I put most of the blame on Brereton and Williams for insisting on dispersed drops over 3 days and on Hollinghurst for refusing to fly closer to Arnhem. The airborne divisions were handicapped from the beginning by the decisions of these three men.

    It took 100km of German held ground in 3 days. This was the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945. The biggest failures were Patton in the Lorraine, Hodges in the Hurtgen Forest and allowing the Germans to push the Americans into a retreat in the Ardennes. Market Garden was small compared to all those failures.
