DeSoto Hemi Dragster Startup

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is my wife's dragster, which is the longest running dragster in NHRA history, and has raced every year since the mid 60's. This is it's first start-up of the year after a complete engine rebuild by her famed father Earl "Doc" Floyd. The engine is a 1956 DeSoto Hemi. In the video are a few of the Floyd brothers. For this start-up we only used alcohol, but will be running with nitromethane at the track.

I believe it was the first hemi used as a car engine, and one of the first hemi head engines built. Chrysler simply popularized it by making a V8 Hemi. Early Alfa Romeo straight eights were hemis as well as Jaguar XKEs.

Alfa Romeo twin cam, supercharged straight 8s of the 1930s were hemi head engines and they won the World GP Championship as well as dozens of other road racing victories. Yeah... Big Daddy won a race that way. Would not tree first, so it was a showdown. The two just sat there waiting for the other one as their engines got hotter and hotter. Finally, the other guy treed, green light, and halfway down the strip the other guy's engine blew. Don't know how or what Big Daddy was using for coolant... but it worked better than the other guy's!!! I think someone finally found out he was running the coolant down into and through the frame tubes to give him just a little more cooling than the other guys. He was also the one that came up with the staggered front wheels, and the solid section around the rim. Gave him a better shot at a hole shot without red lighting. The object of the game is winning... right???

The chassis is modified to match current NHRA specs. Note the roll bar. The oldies would have one hoop and that is it. This one has two hoops with cross bracing between hoops. This is a modification for rules. I don't know all of the regs but there are a number of modifications that can't be seen in this picture. I can't tell what kind of transmission they are running but there must be a scatter shield that meets current NHRA specs. This would protect the driver in case there is a transmission problem.

That is true but steps can be taken to limit the danger. If the engine blew up, the driver would be put into danger but this isn't a AA/FD making 5000 HP. If the engine blows up, all the parts will probably stay in the engine. My wild educated guess is that this motor make 5-600 HP.

Maybe 700 horsepower in a 1200 pound car?

  • @westsideflyer7559

Maybe. It's possible it would make 700 HP running nitro. Probably less because I bet they don't have it screwed down tight so the engine will last all season without having to break it down.

The old 392 hemi was called the fire dome hemi my uncle passed away some time ago and I know that he had two cars in his garage beside his daily driver and I had asked the so called blood sucking lawyer (who kicked over the rock and let this lowlife out )
