DeSoto Hemi Dragster Startup
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is my wife's dragster, which is the longest running dragster in NHRA history, and has raced every year since the mid 60's. This is it's first start-up of the year after a complete engine rebuild by her famed father Earl "Doc" Floyd. The engine is a 1956 DeSoto Hemi. In the video are a few of the Floyd brothers. For this start-up we only used alcohol, but will be running with nitromethane at the track.

They're a lot more dangerous for the drivers, but I've always loved the old slingshot dragsters. ❤
1957 392 hemi,6-71 blower,in a 40 Studebaker coupe gasser. Had been parked in 72,block filled with kerosene. First firing smoked us all out of the shop, but then that sweet music happened.
That's called music folks.

Way back in the mid 60s helped a friend build one of these. We had to stop before we got to this point. We never got it to the point of starting the motor. He was called up for active service and shipped to Vietnam.
This sure doesn't look like the DeSoto my family had back in the early 60's :-)
Old school ! Love it 😀
Anyone who has to wear a gas mask to start their engine has got respect from me.

@@northerniltree - I was just going to say that but you beat me to it! I have a 1:8 scale model of the 1907 Fiat GP car with a 4 cylinder, long stroke, hemi head engine. I believe it was the first hemi used as a car engine, and one of the first hemi head engines built. Chrysler simply popularized it by making a V8 Hemi. Early Alfa Romeo straight eights were hemis as well as Jaguar XKEs.

@Dartgame 340 - Have to disagree with you there dude. Alfa Romeo twin cam, supercharged straight 8s of the 1930s were hemi head engines and they won the World GP Championship as well as dozens of other road racing victories. The Jaguar XKEs of the 60s were twin cam straight 6 hemis and they also were very successful road racing machines. I think those achievements make them more than just "worth mentioning."

Yeah... Big Daddy won a race that way. Would not tree first, so it was a showdown. The two just sat there waiting for the other one as their engines got hotter and hotter. Finally, the other guy treed, green light, and halfway down the strip the other guy's engine blew. Don't know how or what Big Daddy was using for coolant... but it worked better than the other guy's!!! I think someone finally found out he was running the coolant down into and through the frame tubes to give him just a little more cooling than the other guys. He was also the one that came up with the staggered front wheels, and the solid section around the rim. Gave him a better shot at a hole shot without red lighting. The object of the game is winning... right???
The tyres will explode before you reach 100 In 5 seconds. Perhaps ... the crank will sieze because you put too much engine start down the carbs.... correct me if I am wrong. It's a fine piece of engineering'

The chassis is modified to match current NHRA specs. Note the roll bar. The oldies would have one hoop and that is it. This one has two hoops with cross bracing between hoops. This is a modification for rules. I don't know all of the regs but there are a number of modifications that can't be seen in this picture. I can't tell what kind of transmission they are running but there must be a scatter shield that meets current NHRA specs. This would protect the driver in case there is a transmission problem.

These are only capable of about 160 on a real good day the current rails are the ones that push 300 and 10,000 hp these are around the 900 area but I think they are probably more intense to drive even at half the speed . Many people died because of diffs blowing up between their legs and that's a pretty scary thought

Also this isn't a rear mounted engine Dragter, it is a lot more dangerous when the engine is front of you.
@westsideflyer7559

That is true but steps can be taken to limit the danger. If the engine blew up, the driver would be put into danger but this isn't a AA/FD making 5000 HP. If the engine blows up, all the parts will probably stay in the engine. My wild educated guess is that this motor make 5-600 HP.
And I found out that they were still there under a pile of cobwebs and dust and my uncle Ray did the best of himself to put them in the garage and put them away for some one , cars are tired but all original nothing to
