The project brief describes two distinct country homes designed for Bombay families, each situated on an acre of land, yet both sharing a common boundary. The aim is to provide a respite from the urban environment while capturing the essence of the place. Here's a refined and detailed description of the project:
Site Characteristics
Flat Land with Hill View:
The site is characterized by flat terrain with a scenic view of a green hill to the west.
Mango Grove:
The second site features a charming landscape dotted with nine mango trees, known for their low-hanging fruit and dense foliage.
Design Approaches
Home 1: Single-Level Courtyard House
Structure: A single-level design that harmoniously blends with the flat terrain.
Boundary: Enclosed by a meticulously crafted 10-foot high red laterite wall, inspired by temple plinths from the Raigad belt.
Opening: A grand 40-foot-wide opening towards the hill view, accentuated by a blue pool that serves as a visual and physical threshold between the enclosed courtyard and the external landscape.
Courtyard: Central open space edged by a 10-foot wide verandah, providing sheltered movement between rooms.
Pool: Positioned as the foreground to the verdant hill view, enhancing the sense of tranquility and openness.
Home 2: Courtyard House with Pavilion
Structure: Similar to the first but with an elevated pavilion-esque living room and pool area.
Integration with Mango Trees: The design weaves the existing mango trees into the layout, creating a grove-like atmosphere.
Courtyard and Verandah:
Verandah: A 5-foot wide verandah surrounds a smaller courtyard, creating an intimate yet open environment.
Rooms: Arranged like pearls on a string, interconnected yet distinct, offering a seamless flow while maintaining privacy.
Brick Jaalis: Incorporated for enhanced ventilation, allowing breezes to filter through.
Flooring: Brick and terracotta are used for the verandah, providing a cooling effect both visually and tactilely.
Conclusion
The design of these country homes aims to balance investment with profitability, ensuring a deep connection to the locale. Each home, though distinct in character, offers a unique retreat, blending modern comfort with traditional design principles suited to the tropical climate.
