Designing Mount Rainier: Rustic Architecture at Mount Rainier National Park

From entrance arches and rock bridges to curving roads and rustic buildings, Mount Rainier National Park was designed with the visitor experience in mind. The park’s historic buildings and roads represent the development of a style of architecture, called "National Park Service Rustic", that has shaped the design of parks throughout the country. The style utilizes natural elements from the landscape to blend with environment while enhancing significant features of the park for the enjoyment of the visitor. Honored as a National Historic Landmark District, Mount Rainier preserves these roads and buildings in their original design so that you - and future generations - can experience the same awe-inspiring views as a century of visitors to the park. #NPS100

I'm a huge nerd for NPS Rustic architecture... When I travel the parks, I take as many photos of the buildings as I do of the natural wonders. And while I was mentally debating whether Grand Canyon or Yellowstone had the finest collection of NPS Rustic, I see this video... Wowza! This changes everything, including my travel plans.

This is a great informative video and it deserves to be viewed by more people. Clearly it highlights the great amount of resources required to sustain park architecture consistent with NPS principles. Ideally this video is displayed on site at Mount Rainier in one of the visitor centers , however with the Advent of covid-19, visitor centers are closed and this is a good place to view Park Service content normally presented otherwise in person.

I returned from the Republic of Vietnam in May of 1968. We landed at Tacoma. I remember looking off in the distance at Mount Rainier. Mentally, I was in bad shape; not unlike the WW I veteran with 'shell shock'. I had been under intense stress being in bunkers with rockets and motar shells landing all around us. This was a video that brought back a lot of memories. Funny, isn't it?
