Designing a MECH! (POWER LOADER: PART 1)
Ғылым және технология
We're taking on our biggest and most ambitious project yet! The P-5000 Caterpillar Power Loader from Aliens (1986).
Yep, that's the exoskeleton mech suit that Ripley wears to fight off the mother Alien in the 1986 movie Aliens. And we're going to make it, in real life.
This project is going to take a while, so make sure you're subscribed! When it's done -- it'll be able to crush and flip cars! Maybe we'll even give it Power Armor.
The original CAD we used for the first reference images: grabcad.com/library/power-loader

I am a high school student going to a career center for welding and just seeing all of your exoskeleton videos has inspired me to learn more about engineering. I hope with enough training I'll be able to make my own fallout inspired exo-suit. I hope others see your videos and have the same effect on them. Keep up the good work!

"Sometimes we make things for sh*t and giggles." _-the Hacksmith (2019)_
FAQ (will add to as good questions in the comments come up!) 1. Why not use hydraulic rotators for the joints? We looked into it. They're A) stupid expensive - $10,000+ each easily and B) massive. Most are designed for real construction equipment, like excavators -- which are huge. 2. Why only one video a month? To maintain one video a month so no one complains, we need to be able to keep up with the engineering time required to build such a massive project. We will get ahead at first, which is why the 2nd video is ready to be watched for members only -- but we need to keep a buffer so we can keep the series on the regular =) 3. Are you going to be using any electric motors? It will all be hydraulic. End plan is a gasoline engine to power the hydraulic pump. For actual joints, electric motors can't even compare to hydraulics for power and torque. No electric motors are strong enough for the torque we need on the end effectors -- hydraulic motors are the only thing that will work -- and even then they have to be geared down. 4. What's the spinny thing on the couch? It's the kinetic art sculpture from Iron Man 2. Perpetual motion ;-) 5. Why this and not Flying like Iron Man? Believe it or not, this project is still way cheaper than Flying like Iron Man ever could have been. We're able to do the power loader because we can do multiple videos on the series as we make money from the videos. Flying like Iron Man on the other-hand, required an upfront investment of over $100,000 -- JUST to start the project. Likely hood of breaking something means that cost could double or triple super fast. If you want to see someone fly like Iron Man, check out Gravity Industries and Richard Browning -- they've invested over a million dollars into their system. We are no longer pursuing that project.

@BTAJoe

"Why not just use a forklift?"...Well, I'll tell you. It's practical because they are on an interstellar spacecraft. If the feet are electromagnetic, you can put on an environment suit and walk that thing outside the ship for repairs. Given the design of the Sulaco, you could also have long term cargo pods that are kept on the outside of the hull (shape of the craft doesn't matter in a vacuum) that the loader could be used to retrieve as needed.
the evolution of the Hacksmith. 1. I'm gonna build an exoskeleton 2. I*m gonna build a better exoskeleton 3. I'm gonna build a suit on the border between exoskeleton and mech. In the far future "Sooo...we made a jeager from the old movie Pacific Rim".

That intro is top-notch. :-)
I was a Weapons Loader in the USAF when that movie came out. Every load toad I knew wanted one of those. There was a scene where a weapon is being loaded, the weapon looked very similar to one that we loaded on the F-4 aircraft. The weapon knows as a MK-20 (Mark 20) Rockeye (CBU-Cluster bomb unit). We all fancied trading in our MJ-1 Jammers for one of those suits. Oh, yeah, MJ-1 Jammer (known as a J-1), and MHU-83 Jammer (also known as a J-4). Basically glorified forklifts. Used for loading Aircraft weapons on pretty much every USAF Aircraft, at least on all Aircraft I worked on. Lift capacities 3k lbs and 7k lbs respectively. There are several adapters that can be attached to the "table" at the end of the lift arm for various weapons that need specialized loading. Like sliding onto a launch rail, like the AGM-65 Maverick, onto a LAU-88 three rail launcher. Talk about your loaders nightmare! I once loaded 6 missiles, single, which means sliding them onto empty rails hanging on the aircraft. You can find plenty of images and specs (can even buy one, I did see a MJ-4 for sale once for $7500. If I had a spare $7500 I would have jumped on it!)
@r7calvin

This project is going to be great. The comment bellow is not to criticizer the finished project you are going to end up with, it you power loader and its going to be a lot of fun regardless. Just in your commentary on the other guys hydraulics, the hose links he has would work. The wrists he has represent a hydraulic motor used in tilt buckets. They have two hoses enter on the pivot and allow about 90' of rotation. The arm joint is a rotary coupler and is used in forestry and industry rotating heads like a harvesting head on an excavator, They are a compact version of a slew interface coupler but with less pass through functions. Hydraulic hoses can easily bend as indicated in the picture when using a high flex steel braided hose. the important thing is that the hoses fittings are crimped when the hose is in its fitted shape, This lets the steel cores hold form once crimped, you can also get 90' high flow fittings that have a nice radius on them. Now after saying all that, the other guys hoses are incorrect to the movie, in the movie the hoses are alot more messy. In fact alot of what is in the other guys model is more tidy and boxy then in the alien movie. Best of luck with the project and we all look forward to the results
