Designer ranks every London borough's logo from best to worst.

It's a logo battle royale! In this video, As a graphic designer specialising in lettering and branding, I methodically rate and roast all 32 #London borough councils (plus the City of London's) logo designs.
It's a challenging job for anyone to take one - and this isn't a reflection on the people or the municipal governments of these councils. Hopefully we learn something along the way!

    As a former Newham resident, I went into this video eagerly anticipating that wet fart of a logo getting the teardown it deserves. I was *not* disappointed. At first I thought the current one was a marginal improvement on the previous logo with the thicker swoosh, with the weird pointed ends and the horrible Windows 95-looking fade effect, but, like you said about Harrow, at least that one made me feel something. Even if it was distaste.

    cool heraldry tidbit! the animal in the Enfield logo is, in fact, an enfield: a heraldic creature with the head of a fox, forelegs of an eagle, torso of a greyhound and a lion, and back legs of a wolf. This makes it a heraldic pun, which is called a cant. The arms of the Borough of Enfield have an enfield, and an enfield is one of the supporters when it's displayed as an achievement of arms.

    10:00 I find that the logo of Hackney looks like the logo of a steel company. Mainly because logos of such companies here in the Netherlands had similar logos and often used the first letter to create a symmetrical, simple brand logo. After all, the logo of Hackney is really well executed!

    I find university logos fascinating because their text element is pretty uniform but they have different approaches to representing what they stand for. Around the rise in fees in 2012 many changed their logos to focus on seeming more prestigious. For example Winchester went from a strong local symbol to a crest that says prestige but is weaker in my opinion.

    Really great video. I previously worked at Newham (as a designer) and always hated the logo for similar reasons - it's so insipid. Much to my horror I found out while working there it was indeed commissioned and made by an outside design agency (despite having an in-house design team). I don't necessarily mind that it was outsourced, I think it makes sense to have an exterior perspective, but for it to be so bad and that the design team had zero consultation on it is a really damning indictment of the way that place is run. When I was leaving they were looking at a rebrand, and they had earmarked an agency to do it. It wasn't a design agency though, it was a PR agency. So nothing better will come of that I'm sure. In a slightly less bitchy and more interesting piece of info, I now work at Tower Hamlets and we updated our logo not long after this video came out to get rid of those wonky lines and jagged edges. It looks markedly better, but we often comment that we doubt anyone but other designers would see the difference.

    As a resident of Greenwich, the logo doesn't really say much about the borough at all. Why not play up the nautical angle or that Greenwich is the centre of the world? Heck, the Shepherd Gate clock would be a great source of inspiration to take from and give the logo more ownership. Greenwich's coat of arms is a much better representation and incorporates much of what I said above that plays into Greenwich's associated history with the military, royalty and astronomical studies.

What he would have inferred and sketches and other images I would have seen would have soiled my soul for life. As a local government lifer who has worked for a number of, and dealt with even more county, borough and district councils over the past three decades, I am sad enough to be able to recognise most council logos even if the names are removed. I've noticed a trend in their rebranding over the last ten years or so from using bland genertic instantly forgettable motifs to strong memorable visuals with local characteristics, two good examples being Staffordshire CC using the Stafford knot and Leicestershire CC using a fox standing on a capital L. Both I think will stand the test of time. However Lincolnshire CC's and Coventry City Council's latest attempts at utilising the Lincoln imp and Lady Godiva respectively seem lame in comparison but at least the intention was there, unlike many of the logos you constructively criticised here.

    I see you're fairly new on here but I hope you continue to produce content! This was really interesting and I was fascinated by how you characterised the different fonts and logos because although I find fonts interesting, my brain just doesn't pick up on what they look like 👀 maybe you could do a video on what to look for in a font?

    i found Jay's video/borough rhyme really funny, but you helped me appreciate the logo isn't just about a drawing. it goes on everywhere and it needs to be adapted to all sorts of applications, including reducing it to a size of a post stamp. having said that, i'm surprised you ranked Newham lower than Croydon or Southwark. I can see you dislike swooshes, but they're more inventive than just having your name or a "signature" like the other 2. I'm also surprised Lambeth got so many points. those "triangles"/whatever those yellow things are, are reminiscent of nothing and don't really add much to the logo anyway, you did mention personal preference and i guess those are mine. great video

  • @LinusBoman

    @LinusBoman

    Hey, thanks Diogo. Ultimately any system for ranking visual flair will be subjective, but something I perhaps under-explained was the craftsmanship involved in doing something simple, well. Lambeth's triangle flags may seem simple, but as a designer, I can immediately tell that weeks of tweaking and care went into getting them just right. Contrast that with the examples of "autotrace" that I rail against - it's like the difference between a sandwich made with store bought, mass produced, pre-sliced bread or making a sourdough from scratch. I understand not everyone will appreciate it on the same level, but maybe I should do a video explaining this concept a little clearer. Cheers for checking out the channel!

    Hey Linus... Just wanted to drop by and say how much I'm enjoying your videos. I only discovered your work on KZread very recently, but I'm having fun going back through your archive! You make some very interesting comments and always have something worthwhile to say on the subject of graphic design. Re: the London Borough logos, I'm broadly in agreement with what you said, especially regarding the Barking and Dagenham logo. I was working for the borough when it introduced the double arc and I was as dumbfounded then as I am now. B&D used to use it's coat of arms much more prior to the late 90's, but when they brought in this unimaginative dross, my heart sank. A great opportunity missed, I'd say. One other thing: When I see a logo that has two identical/similar letters together (as in the stylised H and the capital H of the word Hackney), I find it really jarring. What's your thoughts on that? I wondered if you'd mark the logo down because of the close proximity of the two H's. I feel the circular H should be spaced a little further away from the name... is that fair comment?! Anyway, keep up the good work... I think your videos are great! (Best wishes from New Zealand...)

    this popped up in my feed and i love it. well done analysis and presentation! i’m not so down on the city of london as you are and would put that at the top despite the crest’s weaknesses. i do cringe at the use of two different ampersands in the hammersmith & fulham logo. the large one in blue is disturbingly odd with its array of thicknesses that distracts from the rather nice large h or f and only loosely connects (literally and figuratively) to the unnecessary ribbon element. i’d love to see a modern update to camden, there’s some potential to build from there. nice video, you’ve gained a subscriber!

    I'd criticise Hackney for using the logo directly to the left of the name since there's a repetition and clash of style between the logo-H and the text-H. I wouldn't omit the text-H, since that would look stupid, but I'd always have the logo larger and centred above the name.

    The little OUO on the crest in Islington makes me laugh so hard. I'm assuming it's meant to be like, two suns and a moon or something -- anything that ISN'T a little obscenely happy face, but I've just been on the internet too long and it just looks like a personified, excessively happy thing to me. (And then the plant swooshes kinda end up furthering that and looking like arms/hands on hips...)

    Very nicely done and shines a light on how the design standards are so low for borough councils. I somewhat covered this topic for my college dissertation at St Martin’s when I looked at the disparity between how areas marketed themselves to tourists versus the actual residents. Logos for the former were clearly given much more leeway to present the area in a very positive light and clearly had a different approval process (possibly with different final approvers). I wrote my dissertation in 1996 and was amazed to see the likes of Camden, Merton and a few others hadn’t changed their borough logo. I think you’d be fascinated to make a similar video that compares the tourist vs resident logos of the same boroughs.
