They will drop leaves in the winter they go through a dormancy period. They require very little water during this time. Lots of pearlite added to the mix also helps. Fast draining is very important. Full sun is a must for them to flower.

Hi Nicole, I'm a "liker" and subscriber from Lake Charles, LA who has 4 Adenium obesums and 2 A. Arabicums. I certainly didn't realize there were so many channels out there devoted to this plant! Now I don't even have to buy any books about them with all the instructional videos there are out there. They are interesting and beautiful plants that are easy to take care of and really don't require that much attention, which I love. I am, however, moving them daily from my shaded patio to direct sun so they get at least 6 hours daily. I fed them a couple of weeks ago with 1/2 strenghth 20-20-20 Ferti.lome granular fertilizer. I learned long ago it's better to err on the side of being too weak rather than strong with the fertilizer! Good luck with yours and always, happy gardening! 🪴

Just a tip for anyone who just got one that has been working great for my Desert Rose, instead of using regular potting soil I planted mine in a cactus and succulent mix, which is almost 50% stones (volcanic stones and other kinds I don't remember) my plant has loved it so far, she's already blooming and producing secondary branches. Also, I'd recommend using organic fertilizers to reduce the risk of over or under feeding, really cool plant glad I got mine on sale for $20 😄

I have probably more than a dozen desert roses and grew most from seed. I have a few that flower a lot and some that have never flowered. I only water mine once a week and it’s hot in Central Texas with very high humidity. I have most in terra cotta as they will rot quickly if they stay wet. I use organic plant food by espoma with every watering tho when I mix up a tub of fertilizer I do mix in some osmocote for a slow feed as well. I mix in some orchid bark and some expanded shale. It’s a fast draining soil. Desert Roses are really cool plants.

I also just got some more seeds in! I have 2 purple and some creamy pink double ruffle! Thry just sprouted and I'm planting them in their own pots in the morning. I'll post photos on IG. 😃 Loved your video btw! Very informative! However mine down here actually like a bit more water than recommended. I believe it has to do with maybe so much humidity and higher temps? They've been enjoying this extremely wet spring and summer here this year, for sure. They're growing like weeds this year!

I live in Montana. Researched and Found a better potting medium and plan on barely watering over winter....also putting in a south facing window for maximum light. So far, so good....getting too cold at night even now to put them outside, don’t want to shock them anymore than they already have been with shipping and repotting.

My Clean Leaves hi maybe try putting a pieces of fly wire netting over the drainage holes and then some larger stones or scoria in the bottom of the pot before placing any soil in. This makes sure the holes stay open. When you water soil and have no filters the damp soil can fill in the drainage holes and the roots get too wet and stay wet. Cheers

The only thing I know that gets rid of spider mites is an insecticide especially for spidermites. Also wash or wipe off the leaves with a diluted soap and water. Like a drop of dish washing liquid in a litre of water. Wipe it off with a soft cloth on the leaves and on the caudex before you apply the insecticide and you will have to treat it again with the insecticides again in a week or two to keep away re infection. You will also have to clean the area you keep it as well as clean and spray surrounding plants with the same insecticides because otherwise you will keep fighting a losing battle and they will return and end up killing the plant.

Hi 👋 Nicole, you should check out Maria’s Garden YT channel she also sells her desert rose really affordable, plus you know the exact flower color. She has some really good info on Desert Roses. In my opinion she is my go to for good information. Like for instance, she uses fine chipped pine bark, which normal folks can not get, she gets it in huge qty. it’s mainly for people who have greenhouses, anyways....for my desert rose I’m going to be using, either coco chips or orchid mix. I like to get the orchid mix that has smaller sized wood chips (not miracle grow 👎🏼) plus it has charcoal and perlite or pumice. I also use a better grade of cactus soil, Black Gold is my preferred one. One thing I did notice, where is your drainage screen 🤨. You need to either get nylon screen or use drywall tape. I get mine from the 99 cent store 😝. Sometimes I will double it up (crisscross) to make the screen holes smaller, especially for cactus soil. I saw a small desert rose for $10, figured I try it out, see if it survives my care ☺️. I really want a frilly dark purple flowering one 💜😉. Thanks for the video, hope I didn’t come off snooty 🤦🏻‍♀️, I just make observations, and I want you to be a good plant mom 😊. Happy Planting 💜🌺🌸

You should not repot this until it is root bound and bursting from its pot. The pot you put it in was TOO big. Makes sense I read it died in the comments. I over wintered 4 in the house last year and I probably watered them like 3x over the whole winter. Also they do not have aerial roots. Those are regular roots. They are there because to make the caudex fatter you lift it out of the soil when you repot so just the very bottom is in soil I cut them off.

@@MyCleanLeaves doesn't matter where I'm at. I'm in a big city and I still say shopping in the wrong places. Stop going to Walmart and home Depot for your plants.

Patrick Dempsey I didn’t get this from Walmart or Home Depot. Did you watch the video? I got it from my local plant shop. I shop small when I can. And if paying an extra $15-$20 for a plant I’ve been wanting to help support local small businesses around me, I’ll do that. And, it does matter where you live. People in Florida or California can get better deals on plants due to the simple fact that they have growers near them, and it cuts out shipping and the middle man. More importantly, there is a kind way to go about expressing your opinion, or giving constructive criticism. That doesn’t seem to be your strong point. Try being a little nicer to people you don’t know. Good may come of it. 🧡
