DeSantis signs controversial ‘anti-riot’ bill into law

Joined by Florida Republican lawmakers and representatives from law enforcement agencies around the state, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday morning signed into law the controversial so-called anti-riot bill that aims to address protests that turn violent.

    Exactly! There is nothing in HB1 that limits our First Amendment rights. In fact, it protects them even more and emphasizes that peaceful protest is more than welcome, so anyone angry about this needs to move out of Florida to one of the states that allow this type of inexcusable behavior.     So there weren't laws in place already against rioting and damaging property? How about harsher laws against police misconduct , that cost the US tax payer 85 million in lawsuits payouts and an additional 28 million in legal fees for just 2018 . The costs over the next nears haven't been calculated yet as far as I can find , but from what we see in the news its only going to get higher . OH its also the root cause of at least 95% of the riots in the first place , you pull a bad tooth , why not a bad cop ?

    And that means what just because he signed it into law don't mean s*** any law can be challenged. Like for instance they don't boycott Israel act that was passed by Texas and then Arkansas bootleg and lick Texas but and passed a similar law typical of Arkansas ain't got no thoughts of their own but anyway it took about 2 years but the law was deemed unconstitutional because it infringes on a person in the first amendment right boy texted didn't want to hear that s*** because Texas do a millions of dollars in business deal with Israel quite simply the law says that if you are a State contractor or state employee you have to sign a pledge not to boycott Israel well that ain't friends is on a person's constitutional right however in Arkansas they wanted to expand upon the law for other means well guess what federal judge appeals judge found out the law is unconstitutional so bye-bye don't work out Israel law in Texas and Arkansas what did they feel foolish you can't make state employees give up their first amendment right, and if you're a private contractor you can't make the state make you give up your first amendment right contractor don't wake up in the morning say you know what I want to work out is real contract is in the business of making money hey state government official y'all need 5,000 bids okay we can do that but we're not thinking about political things we're thinking about making money and only money but at the same time you don't negate somebody's right to boycott. Is there a secondary option if they decide to do so but they're not thinking about it.

Everyone still has the right to peacefully protest, no one has the "right to riot" unfortunately some don't understand the difference and the far left plays on that using peoples emotions to drive their own personal career goals. Rioting and protest are not the same and there is no excuse for it. For a group that claims "words kill" believe only their words and rights matter, that is fascism and it never works out.

    Because as we have seen, when black people protest, the police often escalate the violence, which causes property damage that gets blamed on the protestors.     Because during any protest, when the numbers get high enough, there will inevitably be some humans who damage property. With this bill, they can shut down an entire protest just by one bad actor, and it's only a matter of time before people will be paid to damage property during protests in order to give police an excuse to shut it down (if that has not already been happening..)

    There is a big difference between peaceful protest and criminal behavior,.... if property is being damaged and/or people are being attacked it is no longer protest. Kudos to governor DeSantis,.. this nation need 49 more just like him.

    @@Utonian21 Protest and Riot are two different things. Do you even read the constitution about PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY? I don't recall it saying VIOLENT ASSEMBLY. This Bill actually protects both protesters and the state. Florida people don't play around, if you riot here, people will shoot you...... Either you face the people or face the cops, you choose.

    Funny how they weren’t so ready to initiate this when they rioted at the Capitol! When you look at everyone with him on that stage, what did you see???? I saw the very reason for the riots. Now let’s see if he addresses police actually holding their own accountable. I’ll bet that won’t happen.
