So sorry to hear about your family situation. The colorless blender marker works well if you're into adult coloring and want to use these on paper that doesn't hold up well with water.

Thanks for this extensive and detailed review of an important art material! You helped me decide which of the new colors I "had to have" from open stock. Love from Eugene, Oregon

I am in love with Inktense. I wrote a note to you on your Patreon page that was a bit longer, but the jest of what I said was how much I appreciate this review and I love to see you using them. I would love to see more projects with them. I have the blocks as well as the pencils, and got my new colors from Cult Pens in the UK. They had the full set of new colors in one great little set. I don't know if they still do. I explained how I use them on the nylon board as you demonstrated, but I was able to get very soft and light colors that way, even though I applied several (light) layers. I use them on my mixed-media sketchbook as well as watercolor paper and they really work beautifully. I have heard that they can fade from fabric, depending on the care you use in laundering them, but that is another can of worms. My deepest condolences on the loss of your uncle. I wish you and your family peace. Thank you for taking the time for this review. You are always appreciated and I learn so much from you. Take care.

I’m sorry you’re having the illnesses and deaths in your family. I think that all of us who reach a certain age see people from the previous generation pass away and it seems to us as if it happens all at once. My mother, who is 99, has seen almost all of her friends pass away. Luckily, she has some younger friends who keep her lively when we cannot be with her. It is good that you showed what happens when you apply other substances than water. This information could be useful for those of us who do mixed media. It’s also helpful to know which other colors to order open stock if I want them. I admit that I often use colored wax/oil pencils on top of my Inktense when I need to sharpen my portraits because of the range of pastel colors. I just wish Derwent would come out with a whole range of their Drawing Pencils.

Thanks for another excellent review Harry. And very sorry to hear about your dad and uncle. My prayers are with you and your family. I hope they will roll these out with more availability in the US -- been hearing about the new colors for months. There are a few I'd love to buy open stock since I already have a couple dozen colors.

I'm so sorry to hear about your family's loss, Harry - sending healing thoughts to you and your family. And thank you so much for another incredibly in-depth review. The time and care that you put into reviewing art materials to help others make informed choices is astounding - thank you so much for so freely sharing your time and expertise. :) I'm curious - have you ever tried using a water-based blender pen to activate Inktense pencils (or any other watercolour pencils)? I'm thinking something like a Tombow blender pen or an Ecoline blender pen. Based on my experience with colourless blender pens from alcohol marker sets, I think there must be some glycerin in with whatever alcohol carrier they're using in the pens - I think it's the glycerin that's letting the alcohol blender pen partially dissolve water-soluble media like Inktense (it might also be the type of alcohol that's used - I think I'm going to do an art/chem mash-up video about why certain things only dissolve other certain things :)). With a water-based blender pen like a Tombow, I seem to get the pencil to dissolve almost as well as with water (and better than with an alcohol-based blender pen) but with a bit more control than with a water brush. With a water-based blender pen, there's also less moisture being applied to the paper so if I'm working on less "water-friendly" paper there is less chance of crinkling or warping. Just wondered if you had ever tried something like that. :) Thanks again for all you do, Harry! Blessings! Connie (aka Colouring Chemist)

Hey, Connie! You are here as well! I always watch your channel. May I add something for the blender part. Holbein Meltz: usually works well with Polychromos & Holbein pencil, however it acts like water when applied, and blends well with water-soluble materials. As far as I know they use DPG solvent (commonly in perfume).

I'm just putting the final touches on a video I hope to release soon where I look at some of the different ways of dissolving both "normal" coloured pencils and water-soluble coloured pencils and that Holbein Meltz pen turns out to be truly amazing in my testing! Thanks so much for watching my videos! :)

I’m not an artist at all I just love to do adult coloring and these are truly luxurious to have. When I first got the 72 sets, they reminded me of my childhood with the coloring books my mom would buy that had the ink already in the book and you would just take your paintbrush to create the magic. Albeit this ink is way better than what was in those books and I just love these pencils. I did breakdown and purchased the 28, paid twice the shipping for them LOL but life is short so love and enjoy your pencils is what I think. Thank you for all your videos and sending all the best as you navigate the season of life your currently in. 💙

My condolences, Harry! Wish you and your family all the best in face of the difficult circumstances. I love these pencils as well, and the new colors look pretty cool. Your video does an amazing job of illustrating why the pencils are so great. Even with all the difficulties, it’s truly surprising how quickly you managed to produce this video review, and how deep it really is. 😺 Oh, and a few words about your artwork: I love how contrasty and punchy it looks, and the depth of the black background. I also think your use of cold press paper might have not been a bad match, as that type of paper tends to provide superior pigment spread and just smoother results on both flat and gradient washes. Your final result looks really smooth and nice from here, and I don’t see detail being compromised that much - a great job indeed! 😺

I LOVE the Inktense pencils. The colours are absolutely fabulous and I adore all the lovely yellows and blues in the set but I totally agree with you, it would be so good to have some paler colours. A few years ago Derwent came out with some pastell colour watercolour paints in a set and those are a nice addition if you need some light colours to work with. I do use them a lot with colourless blender markers if I am working on thinner paper and I don't want the paper to warp. Another great way to use them is to add details to half dried watercolour paintings. I love to do that because it creates a really unique effect.

Sorry for your troubles, Harry. Keeping busy and productive is best to avoid a "pity party". There is an old saying, "Hell is sitting around thinking about yourself". Your art work is absolutely GLOWING! What an amazing skill you possess. I did not see the speed version of the fish with the dry to wet, but perhaps that is elsewhere or yet to be published. (Edit - I just found the video, and don't know how I missed it.)I have been using solely watercolor for many years, and do find the Derwent to be an excellent product. However, pencils are quite labor intensive. The Caran d'Ache palette is a bit helpful. Perhaps I am not experienced enough with this new medium, but I find that even when I make sure all of the pigment is activated by water, it still will reactivate a wee bit for glazing at times. The colors, while bright, had quite a drying shift and dried lighter. For me, it would be simpler (less labor intensive) to paint the BG instead of using pencil. Currently I am attempting a piece with a blurred BG in watercolor and autumn leaves as the foreground subject in Inktense. The results you have achieved are stunning.

I think you might have a light balancing issue in this video. A lot of the bright colors like orange, red, yellow, show up weird and way too similar. Also your hands have that weird "glow" that people get when the light balance is off and skews orange. I have watched on three different devices with different settings, and I'm seeing the same thing from this video on each device.

Thanks for the heads up, I’m not sure what more I can do though. I use Final Cut Pro which is a powerful editing software package and I use all the off setting tools on that to rectify things like saturation and white balance. I’m not sure if you are familiar with FCP but it’s pretty easy in that once you select a video clip and you go into your saturation, color and contrast settings, there is like a line graph which you just move the relevant saturation, color and contrast options util it is all flat and uniform. I’m sure there are more accurate and complex ways of editing within FCP but I’m just not competent enough to mess more indepthly. I must admit, I’m not a video editor nor am I a photographer, I’m just an ex soldier, creating and uploading videos to KZread in the hopes of helping someone. I’ve watched a few videos on KZread learning how to do basic video editing and photography, but I am a million miles away from being proficient at either. I wish I had the time to learn, but I run this channel on my own, so I do all the writing on my website, take all the images and edit them, record the videos, edit them and upload them, research the products, test them, creat art with the product, reply to questions, emails, run a home, with three demanding kids of which two live out but still might as well live with us given the demands. I’d love to create a professional set up in terms of video quality, but I’m just not bright enough to master the technical aspect of photography and video editing and all the lighting etc. thank you so much for the advice, I will certainly take everything you’ve mentioned into consideration next video and try to sort it and make it a bit better. Thank you so much for all the advice my friend.

I'd love to have more of their products, but I cannot justify buying them at the prices they ask. They're overpriced.
