Those include years when our team had absolutely no reason to make the playoffs because it was in an active rebuild. Celtics made the conference finals 9 times with 3 (soon to be 4) finals appearances. Of those 9 conference finals appearances, no one expected the vast majority of those Celtics teams to make and/or the win the conference finals. Because again the majority of those teams were rebuild squads not contenders. In the Tatum Era, his first few rookie seasons he over performed expectations because IT, Kyrie, Hayward, and Kemba were primary options and injured. There was no reason to think we would make it to the finals in those years. The only losses we can blame Tatum for would be that finals loss to the Warriors, and that conference finals loss to the Heat despite injuries on our team in that series because Tatum was the number one option. Overall, we consistently outperformed expectations with few exceptions where we fell short of them. That’s a dream for most of the league because their teams are not consistently in winning circles and their franchises couldn’t maintain that for more than a decade like we have. Just because Boston fans have irrationally high standards doesn’t mean we can’t be proud of good runs with bad teams. If we only ever judge a team by championships, bandwagon fans that jumped from the Warriors to Milwaukee to Denver to the Timberwolves would be the only people allowed to be called real fans of franchises.
