I love this duo; their acting and singing are totally unique, impressive, and charming. But the staging, on the whole, is kind of uncomfortable ...

That's because this is the restaged North American tour that ran from 2013 to 2020.

I don't know why ALW messed with the original choreography and sets. IMO, they were perfect. In this version the choreography is lacking. They physicality of the characters is, too. It's like the 2004 movie. Yuck. Are all the new productions like this?

Only the Restaged tour is done this way. The original productions (London and Broadway) have implemented some new things but nothing like this. And are overwhelmingly the original. Though productions going forward will be based on London’s slightly newer version (the one with some changes) instead of the true original. But only the Restaged version, which is opening in Australia next week, is done this differently.

@@phanoftheopera Thanks for the response. I think the original sets and choreography, and the music are what make the original musical a hit. Start messing with the ingredients and you have nice music but not much else. I won't be seeing the re-staged version out of principle. That said Glad the Majestic and Her Majesty's are staying true to the original. Why mess with perfection?

@@ReclusiveMountainMan Agree. London has also made some changes, there’s no more angel, a different shape for the chandelier, etc. But overall the same. Broadway has a few blocking changes, but still the same chandelier and angel. I don’t know why any of the changes were necessary, as you said it’s perfection as it is. I think you have to have an open mind and realize the Restaged version is different from the start. Similar to other non-replicas.

@@phanoftheopera Maria Bjornson and Gillian Lynne are the reason the visuals of this musical work so well with the music. They are the reason we get goosebumps when things are done right. I honestly feel any change detracts from their work. I hope they keep some of the productions true to the original form.

@ReclusiveMountainMan ALW had nothing to do with this. This was all Cameron Mackintosh And the 2012 UK tour was like this, the 2013 US tour was like this, and the show in Melbourne is like this
