With the new album, Sonder, Dermot Kennedy admits he’s never related to a word more. Sonder, “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own,” encapsulates universal themes of love, loss & hope, with the platinum-selling artist evolving into an even more expressive and powerful storyteller
LYRICS
How it must feel to be a bird
Roaming lonely over sea air
How it must feel to be a bird
London, Paris underneath
I'll wait on my own here
And I couldn't tell you enough that I'm sorry
And no, you couldn't tell me enough that you loved me
She's bringing the moon and stars to me
Damn permanent reverie
And even though this life, this love is brief
I've got some people who carry me
Wasn't it love as soon as we knew each other properly?
Living 'bout half right, until a certain person got to me
Nothing is secret, everything's sacred, How it ought to be
Under the moonlight on a clear night, on rooftops is where I want to be
Sometimes I'm like a child, It's something I can't release
Dreams of her coming home, sweet home
I'm telling you home's so sweet
Said you reminded me of the summer times, and I still mean that
In a full room I'm the only one she's smiling at
So wouldn't you let me know if you were thinking less of me?
That's what she asked me what was promised what we both agreed
But truthfully if you ever go, you'll drop me straight to Hell's 7th circle
And I was talking with you earlier
We were open and vulnerable, it was wonderful
I, I used to dream that you would talk to me
I used to dream that you would talk to me
And I couldn't tell you enough that I'm sorry
And no, you couldn't tell me enough that you loved me
She's bringing the moon and stars to me
Damn permanent reverie
And even though this life, this love is brief
I've got some people who carry me
You know that feeling when you think your heart is gonna come right out through your shirt?
I get it a couple times a year but I've been getting it more often with her
Now when I'm face to face with death I'll grab his throat
And ask him, "how does it hurt?"
Up in those golden moments growing old too quickly
Was he thinking of her?
But she's bringing the moon and the stars to me
Damn permanent reverie
And even though this life, this love is brief
I've got some people who carry me

from an instagram live: "this is a song i wrote a long time ago and it's kind of about if there's a place or even somebody or somewhere you'd wanna be if you were having a really bad day or if you just weren't feeling so good. i know for me it's a place off the west of Ireland that i actually haven't been to in too long but yeah, i feel like everybody's got one. so this song is called For Island Fires and Family."

I was lucky enough to find him at the of 2017. I got tickets for Oslo in January 2018. The venue held no more than 250 people in an old church-esque building. The setting was perfect. His voice is so raw and I worried mike dean would over produce. Thankfully he highlighted the abilities Dermot seems to have established from his busking days. Diamonds take the longest to form, hopefully nothing is rushed from him.

We played this song when we drove around San Francisco that day. One hand on the steering wheel and the other holding my heart. I told myself this is what love is supposed to feel like. Damn I thought I got it right. I spent 5, long hard years healing and then he found me. Yesterday he proved that it was a lie. He was cheating the entire time. Living a whole double life. The part that hits the hardest is ‘ so wouldn’t you let me know if you were thinking less of me ‘. We promised each other if we fell out of love and our feelings changed we wouldn’t lead each other on. We know how that went. I was in love with a man that didn’t exist. He wasn’t real. He never loved me. This song always got to me now it’s hitting parts of me I didn’t know were there.

How it must feel to be a bird Roamin' lonely over sea air How it must feel to be a bird London, Paris, underneath And I'll wait on my own (Ooh, hmm, ooh) And I couldn't tell you enough that I'm sorry And no, you couldn't tell me enough that you love me But she's bringin' the moon and stars to me Damn permanent reverie And even though this life, this love is brief I've got some people who carry me Wasn't it love as soon as we knew each other properly? Livin' 'bout half right 'til a certain person got to me Nothin' is secret, everythin's sacred, how it ought to be Under the moonlight on a clear night On rooftops is where I want to be Sometimes I'm like a child, that's somethin' I can't release Dreams of her comin' home, sweet home And I'm tellin' you home is so sweet Said you reminded me of the summertime, and I still mean that In a full room, I'm the only one she's smilin' at So wouldn't you let me know if you were thinkin' less of me? That's what she asked me What was promised, what we both agreed But truthfully, if you ever go You'll drop me straight to Hell, the 7th circle And I was talkin' with you earlier We were open and vulnerable, it was wonderful I, I used to dream that you would talk to me I used to dream that you would talk to me And I couldn't tell you enough that I'm sorry And no, you couldn't tell me enough that you love me But she's bringin' the moon and stars to me Damn permanent reverie And even though this life, this love is brief I've got some people who carry me You know that feelin' when you think your heart is gonna come right out through your shirt? Get it a couple times a year But I've been gettin' it more often with her Now when I'm face to face with death, I'll grab his throat And ask him, "How does it hurt?" Up in those golden moments, growin' old too quickly Was he thinkin' of her? But she's bringin' the moon and stars to me Damn permanent reverie And even though this life, this love is brief I've got some people who carry me Songwriters: Dermot Joseph Kennedy
