Dermaplaning: Should You Shave Your Face? A Dermatologist Explains | Dr. Sam Ellis

Dermaplaning is a super popular treatment that's done in office with a medical professional (like a medical esthetician or a dermatologist). It helps remove unwanted facial hair and exfoliates the skin. But should you shave your face at home? As a dermatologist, I'm a fan of dermaplaning, but there are a few things you should know before you try it at home.

I've been shaving my face for years, with a regular razor in the shower, I might add. I am turning 62 next week and I swear this practice has helped keep wrinkles at bay by exfoliating. Never cut myself, hair doesn't grow back coarser, and makeup goes on so smoothly!

I have to do this about every 3 weeks or more frequently, even though I have blonde hair. And with aging it ain't getting any less frequent!! Whoever takes care of me in old age better do it for me!! For those of you with the stray black chin hair - go and get a certified electrolysis technician to zap them permanently. It's WELL worth it and not very expensive at all.

Hi Dr. Ellis, if you get a sec to answer: 1. 1. Would Paula's Choice BHA liquid be a good option right before or after face shaving or neither? For someone with clogged nose pores. 2. Why is face shaving done on dry skin when all other types of shaving requires shaving cream or oil??? 3. How often do you recommend face shaving? Every two weeks?

As a guy who shave everyday, your hair doesnt get thicker or grow faster, trust me i wish 😄 1. Shave at the end of your shower with a shaving foam (its basically just a thicker soap, so also cleanses your face) for the smoothest and easiest glide. If you use an oil cleanser at night, that works like a shaving foam too. 2. I wouldnt use any acids besides maybe hyauluronic and such after, as shaving is already exfoliating and removing the top layer of skin, and its extra sensitive after. 3. Shaving often doesnt harm, it actually keeps the skin looking very healthy and clean.

Threading was introduced to the USA in the last 12 years which is widely used in the eastern countries for ages. I learned it from my mother and it has 0 side effect if it was done effectively. The hair comes back as normal. I am really hesitant for shaving as the hair might come back thicker like male hair so I am not sure of course there is skin benefit to shaving as you made it more clear and if a dermatologist is using why not. Years ago, I was enamored of microdermabrasion. During one session, my esthetician very tactfully mentioned face fuzz and that she'd noticed it on herself. Naturally, I noticed the fuzz on my own face after that. I'm 60 years old and after shaving my face for nearly 25 years, I have no wrinkles. I've only recently begun using vitamin C serum, which is lovely and brightening but haven't tried any acids. I honestly had no idea that my skin should probably look a bit creased until very recently!! I highly recommend this!!

@@nikkidasso6623 hi there. Well, I can highly recommend dermaplaning. I wish I could tell you I use sun screen but I don't. Some skin is more inclined to wrinkle than others - genetics. I've long heard that drinking lots of water is good for your skin and yes, I do that because I don't care for other beverages. I think it would require more water than the recommended amount to actually impact a person's skin. I think that exfoliation and keeping your face clean and properly moisturized are key. I'd opt for skin brightening serums like vitamin c and glycolic acid. As far as exfoliating goes, there are a variety of safe and cost effective ways to do that. Yes to dermaplaning and yes to exfoliating enzymes, which is what I was doing years ago. I used a pumpkin enzyme mask once a week. When I wear foundation, it's a brightening formula. Years ago, I used dewy finish by Clinique and now I use Lift and Luminate by N°7. I've never found a product I love for my neck but feel better about it when I apply a serum (using M3 vitamin C.) I've decided to accept it along with crows feet...which I kinda like.

Judith, I'm in my mid 50s and don't have wrinkles, as such, although I do have a smile line either side of my mouth. But no crows feet or forehead wrinkles, and people are often surprised to learn my age, or hear me talk about my grandchildren. I always thought that it was due to having greasy skin when I was younger, but you've just put me right there! However, my mum and her sisters had younger looking skin up until they were around my age. Then they started getting lots of wrinkles quite fast, but they smoked all their lives and sunbathed using tan oil. I've done neither, so I hope to age a little more gradually from now on. In reply to the woman in her 30s with wrinkles, I'm often mistaken for that age, but it's just a combination of luck and lifestyle. Love the skin you're in and make the most of what you have. Comparisons (even with our younger selves) isn't helpful or good for our wellbeing. We have to live for the here and now.

Love this! I had dermaplaning years ago, and do it at home and I agree with all the benefits you talk about. I've used all the tools you mentioned. I think they are all good options. I wish it were more main stream for women: not such a taboo topic. Thank you for this!

Omg this feels life changing for me. I know that sounds a little over dramatic but I have PCOS and I have a lot of facial hair that I have always been so self conscious about. I pluck and wax but I have always been scared to shave because I didn't want it to grow back darker and thicker. So to hear you say it won't literally is going to change my life. I just now went to Amazon and ordered me some of the eye brow razors and they will be here in 2 days! 😬 I can't wait to try this!

This was super informative and cleared up previous misinformation. Thank you. How would you compare these to threading? I’ve always been apprehensive or fearful of shaving and turned to threading, which I love for the same purposes but my wonder now is, it may not provide the same level of exfoliation? That aside, thank you again for taking the time to create and post.

Okay but what's the real difference between thicker hair and hair that just appears thicker? It's not like hair that just looks thick is more desirable. I don't want to risk having thick looking hair all over my face! I don't understand why dermatologists always make this distinction when in reality neither one of those options are desirable. That right there convinced me not to try this tbh because I don't want to be forced to keep doing it forever or have hair that's more noticeable all over my face.

Great video! I don’t shave my whole face, but I use Tinkle brand razors to do the peach fuzz on my upper lip & along my jaw. I was wondering if you could do a laser/light treatment series, discussing them by concern (rosacea, hyperpigmentation, etc). I heard IPL is good for rosacea, but then something about red light laser being best. Just wanting to learn more before I go further, since I know it’s definitely an investment.
