Derek Thomas: The Great Commission

After His resurrection, Jesus commanded His church to take the gospel to the ends of the earth and make disciples of all nations. In this session, Dr. Derek Thomas considers Matthew 28:18-20, showing how the Great Commission is simply an extension of what God was doing and promised to do in the Old Testament. Dr. Thomas also explains how God’s mission has relevance for us today.

"teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" ^^^^^ The most neglected - ignored - hated part of the "Great Commission". Mat 28:18 KJV - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Mat 28:19 KJV - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mat 28:20 KJV - Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen. Verse 18 - ALL AUTHORITY - Jesus Christ Verse 19 - Teach - Who ? Teach ALL Verse 20 - Teach - What ? What I Commanded

Not "make disciples of all nations", but "disciple all the nations." The only Greek imperative is "disciple" not "make."

Good point...yet in meaning the verse comes out either way as being six of one & half a dozen of the other.

@@Shabeck100 Thanks for acknowledging good point. All due respect to Derek, but he misread Mt 28: 19. Matthew wrote that Jesus said, "Having gone, then disciple all the nations." Disappointingly (though no surprised) that is not what Derek read in his opening. Christians today think that if they get someone to say the sinner's prayer and accept Jesus that they have fulfilled the great commission and done their job. Nothing wrong with that, but that is not "disciple all the nations" like Paul did and Jesus commanded. Paul in Acts 17 was fulfilling that imperative command "disciple all the nations" in his message to the epicureans and stoics in Athens. 6 or half dozen misses the point - "disciple all the nations." is irrefutable. We have a responsibility to both souls and nations. Took me awhile to learn that but Irenics can be awakening. Blessings and thanks for engaging.

Jesus was speaking to the eleven apostles before his ascension not the general church ( Acts 1, Mat 28, Mark 16, John 14). In Mark 16:17-18 Jesus differentiates general believers from apostles by those signs. Today, believers do few of the signs but are told to do the work of the apostles.

Ligonier Ministries Thus the Holy Bible of which Jehovah God is the one Author was completed by means of his witnesses, even as it had been begun by means of them. Consequently, with no room allowed for Scriptural contradiction, it made be said that The Holy Bible is the Book by Jehovah's witnesses. As Revelation 19:6 exclaims, "Hallelujah!"

Even a Christian cannot brush aside the worship of Jehovah as God. In Revelation 1:5 the Son of God called himself "'Jesus Christ, 'The Faithful Witness.'" When on earth as a man he was a Jew, an Israelite, to whose nation the words of Isaiah were written: "'You are my witnesses,' is the utterance of Jehovah, 'even my servant whom I have chosen.'" Jesus demonstrated that he was a faithful and true witness of Jehovah God. His genuine disciples today must be the same kind of witnesses, Jehovah's.

    - To stay with Jesus Christ is to stay with those whom he pleased to use. Outside the true congregation, what alternative organization is there? Only Satan's organization consisting of his political "wild beast" and his Babylonian world empire of false religion.---Rev. 13:1, 14, 15; 17:3-6.
