    Jeter started winning Gold Gloves when the Yankees signed ARod and moved him to third base lol. I remember being so confused when they did that. No one considered him a better SS than ARod. He was just "The Captain" and the face of the franchise and no one was going to mess with that. No matter how you feel about ARod, he was a team guy for agreeing to move to third even knowing he was the better player.

    If Jeter had moved to third when A Rod came to town, he would have made better use of his defensive strengths - ability to track pop ups and a strong throwing arm. Thus helping his team. Not very Captain like.

    A-Rod begged to come to Jeter’s team. He said he would move to third because he was desperate to play for a winner. If Jeter had begged to go to Arods team, it would be Jeter who had to move. A-rod cost the Yankees many playoff games with his lack of hitting in the clutch (2009 he actually came through). Jeter cost the Yankees literally 0 big games and 0 games overall that I can think of with his defense. He was an ok SS who lost some range in his mid 30s. A-Rod couldn’t catch a damn pop-up. Talk about overrated.

    I am confused, this is a video about how bad Jeter was supposed to be. Every clip seems to prove otherwise. I watched him for 20 years and NEVER thought he didn't belong out there. ARod moving to third, regardless of who was better was expected, Jeter was there already. I'm pretty sure this came up before the Yankees pulled the triggeron the trade. Arod got a ring for it. I do not trust the Ttot stat for sure. If you want to PROVE it, make a video overlaying the range of Jeter vs. other shortstops. I also am wondering about what affect having outstanding third or second basemen have on the performance of a shortstop. Either way, he didn't fool anyone in regards to his range and althletism. This video proves it. I didn't watch Orioles games when they were not playing the Yankees, but I never felt like Ripken was an elite defender when the Yankees played him.

  • @TheDiamondBaseball

    @TheDiamondBaseball

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I get that. The main reason why I didn't go into much detail there is because the purpose of this video was not to explain why he was a bad defender, but rather to explain why people thought he was good when he wasn't. For the record though, DRS stands for defensive runs saved, which is exactly what it sounds like. It uses a metric known as Ultimate Zone Rating (which basically measures a players range and how many plays they are able to get to/make on the field) to figure out how many outs a player makes compared to others at their position, and from there calculates how many runs that player saved on defense as a result. With Jeter, his problem was his range - he didn't get a good jump on batted balls and he didn't have the speed/acceleration to get to balls that other shortstops would get. Glad you enjoyed the video!

I couldn't put my finger on it then, but watching Ripken so many years with underappreciated defense because he wasn't spry like Ozzie Smith...but Jeter was no Ripken. With advanced stats and hindsight it was basically that Jeter was very athletic looking and he hustled hard, but somehow had no range. He was popular and had way too many jock sniffers that boosted his perception (as covered well here) Also another fun argument: Jeter should have been dropped to 8th or 9th in the lineup his last couple years instead of staying at the top of the order.

    The "Jeter" jump throw is the main evidence that Jeters reputation is more propaganda than skill, because every single good SS make that throw at least three times in a season. Why should we hear about Jeter when that play is made as he was the inventor of the play. Come one, at least hundred of SS made that play before him. But maybe they were not the SS of the most mediatic team.

  • @TheDiamondBaseball

    I wouldn't say propaganda, just good timing and marketing. My main issue with those plays isn't the jump throw itself, but the fact that it was even necessary. Those plays were a product of Jeter's shallow range - many shortstops would be able to backhand them and get off a strong throw for the out.

You just wenge for nine minutes that "he sucks because I say so". Prior to defensive statistical analysis Honus Wagner was considered the best not just because of his bat but his willingness to try to make the miracle play. He put his heart and body into every pennant run (the name of the game,right). Statistically or not, aside from his bat, there are few shortstops that could make that magic. He IS one of the best. Coming from a yankees fan, this definitely opened my eyes to see how we may perceive something that differently than it actually is. Yet i do disagree with the premise of the video that jeter was a bad defensive shortstop. Fundementally he was a bad defensive shortstop, but there were no other shortstops that had the baseball iq to make some of the plays Jeter had. So while yes people overrate his defense, and on paper he isn't a great defender, looking at the bigger picture shows that he was a fundamentally inconsistent shortstop yet with an iq of the game that was like no other.

So, I read articles and videos like this and really took them all in. Confused, I thought "I gotta watch some highlights videos because he made some great plays." But then I noticed something...something very _very_ annoying. Every video had the same freaking 9 plays. Even videos made in 2022 about Derek Jeter's defensive highlights are always the _same_ plays. Every. Time. Why are there 50 videos with all the same material? It's irritating seeing the stupid 98 jump throw, and the flip, and the dive into the stands, and the 2000 World Series throw. 20 years worth of plays and nobody can dig up something maybe a bit more forgotten? Well, probably because as Hollywood as those plays were...for a 20 year career, that's all he had which sucks because I know he was out there every game with only a few stints on the DL. But I guess that's the reality.

    I'm going to agree 100% with EoCx, because after that surge from 98-99, Jeter was barely above average. Aside from three seasons where he, at least according to WAR and advanced metrics, should have been an All-Star. From 2000-2014 he mostly wasn't all-star worthy. And for anyone that wants to talk about the WS titles, he won a bunch early when the team around him was also great. I will give Jeter 98-99 all day long because he was that good those two years, but for someone who was the supposed "Captain of the Yankees" man did they do a lot of not winning World Series from 2001 until he retired in 2014 whilst throwing around the most money in baseball and only managed one more WS win in Jeter's career. I also love that in these videos everyone overlooks losing the 2003 Series to the Marlins, he was a part of the '04 team that collapsed against Boston, and only won one other WS from '01 until he retired in '14. Somehow all of this shit gets overlooked along with his defensive liability and as a collective we view Jeter as this top player of all-time with no flaws.

I despise the Yankees, particularly Jeter, but people blindly believing in dWAR just because someone called it an "advanced metric" and said a lot of big fancy math words is the real issue. Jeter wasn't just an average SS defensively, he was a great one. This nonsense all started when people believed that you can calculate wins that an individual player is worth to his team over a non-existent made up "replacement level" player. The claims these statisticians make with WAR and other WAR-based or DRS crap are asinine. To watch a play in modern times and say "a replacement-level player wouldn't have made that play" and award the player with a DRS is silly at best. There is literally no way you can prove that, because 1) there is no real player to insert into that situation to find out, 2) you cannot recreate any single play/pitch/situation/stadium/weather/personal problems/aching joints/gnats flying into your eye/gusts of wind/etc., etc., etc. to put this evaluation to the test. We just trust that someone watched a play (sorry someone who is "trained" lol) to evaluate it and that they made the right subjective decision (that's right, subjective) as to whether it is a play that a non-existent replacement level player would have made. It's so stupid, but it's cool to act like you get advanced metrics and look down/mock people who don't "get it" so everyone jumps on board and regurgitates this BS.

Played his position to the best of his ability won awards, championships and got the girls. It took 14 years to create a Analytics Data component to figure why Derek Jeter was so horrible on defense but yet seem to MAKE EVERY CLUTCH PLAY TO WIN/SAVE A GAME. He has no range but yet made plays he had no business being in. Here is the thing… He didn’t hurt the team much defensively in the win lost column on the eye test.. Intangibles are the forgotten variable to why this argument against is forced since nobody noticed a got damn thing. Allen Iverson has a better Handle than Jordan… But was he a winner on a grand scale!? No. Part of playing the field is reading the bat off the ball to save yourself the need to make spectacular plays on ROUTINE PLAYS. Bottom line. 5 titles, 5 Gold gloves, WS MVPs, Dozen ASG appearances, Most hits in interleague play, Most hits in playoffs all time.. come on now.

    People don't like it when you insult their deities. So instead they argue unprovable platitudes like their eye test tells them otherwise or he played a position for 20 years so he must have been good or he was clutch when he needed to be or something so incredibly inane as he must have been good because he made the routine plays. The people who said they watched every game he played only watched the highlight reels and didn't actually watch him in the field closely. Subpar Fielding speed, incredibly poor range, struggled even on the routine plays and more often than not had to do some pointless theatrics to make up for the fact that he was almost always out of position. Below average arm strength and accuracy that made plays closer than they needed to be. This all gets factored into proper advanced metrics but it was all present his entire career and if you claim it's not true then you didn't actually watch. The dude was not a good fielder. He was below average most of his career and only one gold glove season was he even considered above average and he absolutely got those awards because of the myth built around him and his name. He didn't deserve a single Gold glove ever.

    Jeter was and still is my all time favorite baseball player ever He’s the reason I love baseball ⚾️ and why I was/still am a Yankees fan most of my life. He’s the only athlete I didn’t have anything bad to say. But after watching this, it made me realize that he should’ve finished his MLB career at second or third. He refused to do so as he was too stubborn to switch positions. It’s pretty documented. This sort of opened my eyes 👀 I understand he’s a bit overrated by fans of the game of baseball ⚾️ especially on defense but I have nothing but respect for him
