Derek Fowlds on Yes Minister, Basil Brush, Heartbeat & Returning to the Stage

Ойын-сауық

PRODUCTION DIARY #9 - Derek Fowlds on Yes Minister, Basil Brush, Heartbeat & Returning to the Stage.
Derek Fowlds has been at the heart of British film and television since the 1960s, when he first entered our homes on the BBC as Mr Derek, the side-kick to the irascible Basil Brush. It's a role he admits that he was not keen to continue after the first series. He was a serious actor, after all. A graduate of the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. But the pressure to find work persuaded him to take-on the second series and he never looked back.
We had the absolute pleasure of spending a wonderful afternoon with Derek at his home recently, recording an interview for our upcoming documentary, PETER CUSHING: In His Own Words. Here's another part of the special interview that Derek recorded for our behind the scenes PRODUCTION DIARY series.

What a great guy! Can’t get enough of Heartbeat and, scarily enough, remember watching him on Basil Brush! He came into a SpudUlike one day with his wife. I worked there and he was a throughly nice chap! Can’t remember what he had…may have been baked potato with chilli? Going to read his book I think. As an actor myself you are always learning from “greats” like him.

THANK YOU for these interviews. So many of the actors I watched in my youth are getting up there or have passed on. Sad, very sad.

He does come over as a thoroughly pleasant person. He was genuinely emotional talking about Basil......which is one of my earliest tv memories and it was funny how he referred to Ivan as Basil’s helper (even all these years later!)

For young people who can’t imagine Derek and a glove puppet could be tv gold, look at old film here on KZread. It was extremely funny.

Mr. Derek was easily the best assistant that Basil ever had. I didin't know until now how much Derek Fowld's liked it but I do remember that when he came to the public's attention years later in Yes Minister he took part in a reunion with Basil on some programme (Wogan?) and I was pleased that he did. I learn now that it must have been his pleasure rather than just Basil cashing in on Derek's fame.

How sad: I will get well one day... and re. the play, Next year, if I'm still here... :( Did he at least manage to do his play in the end or was he still poorly? Such a very sweet, lovely and humble man and a very talented and versatile actor.

Alas no. He didn't get to do the play. We had plans for new projects this year, but sadly not to be.

@@RABBITANDSNAIL How very, very sad. Such a great loss. I suppose, however small a consolation at such a time, it is something that he was proactive and had been looking forward to a nice project. And the more so that he had so many supportive friends and colleagues looking out for him.

He's referring to Donald Douglas, the actor, who he was friends with since his early twenties.
