Oldschool (golden age) Coloratura sopranos as Tetrazzini, Nezhdanova, Hempel, Catley... always have power in every note they sing, whether low notes or high notes, staccato or sustained notes

Very interesting comparison. Not Sutherland's best. Deutekom and Popp were always my favorites in this role. Maria Ivogün was a revelation.

Interessante questo contest, con voci di artiste che non conoscevo... Io ho sentito in teatro Deutekom, Serra, Gruberova e Popp, tutte bravissime: ma la bionda olandese, vera voce di drammatico d'agilità mi lasciò un' impressione incredibile... E l' ho sentita anche in Puritani, Nabucco, Lucia di Lammermoor... W la Deutekom, voce portentosa !!!

Schwarzkopf said Deutekom would practice it a third higher on the dressing room. You need to have at least a minor third above to sing this role. That's why sutherland and sills had problems with this role!

I was so surprised by Frieda Hempel's rendition, I had to listen a few times. A great compilation! Thank you for posting!!

Excellent recopilation! Many are missing, though: Wilma Lipp as somebody correctly noted above. She sung many of these difficult Mozart roles (such as Konstanze). Beverly Sills, she also sung the role, Eda Moser (remember that her recording of this aria went to outer space in the Voyager I, so it will be the version that ETs will hear some day, if they have ears of course 😂) Maria Galvany, a recording of 1906 where she adds more notes to the score, accelerates the tempo in the staccatos and includes a cadenza at the end of the aria, sounds strange but very funny 😂😂😂) Lily Pons, of course. (And I'm sure there are more that aren't coming to my mind just now)

Sills hated the role and complained rather bitterly, I thought for her, about how dire was the fate of a sop. who missed even a single high F.

Sills by her own admission hated the role and said so most emphatically.

Sutherland had great difficulties with the top F but she is one of the few to sing precisely all the notes in the gruppetti.

Deutekom!!

Sutherland, I believe, only sang this role a handful of times, and she transposed it down (probably closer to the key in Mozart's time), since she didn't like singing high Fs (or really anything above an E-flat). Her coloratura in O zittre nicht, however, is spectacular and unmatched.

I've heard Frieda Hempel's O Zittre Nicht and her scales are faster than Sutherland's and done with greater clarity.

@@user-sw2ks7ru9p I have found Hempel’s Der Hölle Rache, but not her O Zittre nicht. Of course what makes Sutherland even more amazing is that she did what she did with a voice infinitely bigger than Hempel’s.

Molto interessante. Tutte bravissime ! Astrifiammante dovrebbe essere un drammatico di coloratura, tipo Sutherland che peró in questa incisione non è al meglio. Peccato che la Callas, coi suoi formidabili sovracuti, non l’abbia registrata. Ne mancano parecchie di bravissime. Fra queste proposte senza dubbio la Deutekom, fantastica, la Hempel che fa cose stranissime, la Nazhdenova, e la mia adorata Lucia Popp.

What should the next piece be? The final scene of Donizetti's Anna Bolena. Just include the cabaletta Coppia inicua, or else it will be too long. And be sure to include the only 2 (my opinion, of course, sorry if many get upset) that could sing it as written: Maria Callas and your countrywoman Leyla Gencer.

Wow! Great singers all of them. I think this video is a testimony of Joan Sutherland's huge dramatic coloratura voice, they all sound very small in comparison. With that said, I don't think this role suited her, but it's really entertaning to hear a real dramatic coloratura singing it. I really liked Gwen Catley and Freida Hempel, didn't know about them before.

Sutherland sings the aria a tone lower so, it shouldn’t count.

Not only Sutherland had a smaller voice than Deutekom, but she also sang the aria transposed and changed the speed to execute the difficult parts.

By the Patti recorded, Queen of the Night was no longer a part of her repertoire. I believe her Casta Diva was transposed down 😊

Adelina Patti did not record this performance. She was already very old when recording her voice, and the sound zone moved down to mezzo. Moreover, even during her peak period, I believe she did not have much rich high-frequency skills.

None of them sings the grace note before the turn. (Deutekom doesn't even since the turn.) All disqualified.

Yes, the gruppetti of five notes before the staccati are missing. We only hear something indefinable... but I'm in love with the colour of her voice and the top F are glittering.
