Depth Perception (Intro Psych Tutorial #57)
www.psychexamreview.com
In this video I describe the many cues that we use to perceive depth and experience a 3D world based on the 2D information from our retinas. These include monocular cues (linear perspective, relative size, texture gradient, interposition, and shading), motion-based cues (motion parallax and optic flow) and binocular cues (disparity and convergence).

Don't have a psych exam that I know about anytime soon as I have been out of college 28 years but happened upon your video looking for a description of Motion Parallax and I must say I found it quite interesting and watched the whole thing. As an instructor you did an excellent job of explaining the concepts. Thank you for creating this helpful content.

Would you agree that all images and videos are 2-D unless manipulated? A good parallax demonstration with a camera. While driving down the highway. Zoom a camera forward. As you zoom ahead. Everything in the distance will slow down in the camera. I also find that when encountering heavy rain on the highway. If you hold your cell camera in front of you. You can see much better. A good use for the cell phone camera and why we should have self-driving autos.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking but I would say that because our retinas are flat surfaces we don't "see" depth directly, we can only infer it using a number of cues, and this is what allows us to be fooled by illusions, 3d movies, etc. As for the perceived speed example, Akiyoshi Kitaoka has some great demonstrations of this: twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka/status/1580692919761047552?s=20&t=npMeDgokTxpxz-Ua6xV2dw

Thanks, was very interesting to watch. For me I absolutely feel like muscle memory for focusing my eyes gives me depth perception too. I can close my eyes and focus on objects around my room without looking at them. And when I do open my eyes, sure enough my eyes are already focused on the object.
@PsychExamReview

Yes, there is also a feeling for adjusting the lens (accommodation) and coordinating the angle of both eyes (convergence) for focusing on different depths. This can also be useful for something like learning how to adjust one's eyes to view a stereogram or MagicEye image.

Is accomodation (eye focussing) also a depth cue?
@PsychExamReview
Жыл бұрын
Yes, accommodation is a physiological depth cue based on tension of the ciliary muscle around the lens.

I haven’t done it in a long time since I was a child, when eating going for salt or pepper I’ll would mistakenly take the glass of milk and pour it into my meal. I’d never understand it for a long time. I notice now when playing certain app card games. I don’t see 3D movies correctly… 59 female, surgery at 13, didn’t really take, yes I have a dominant eye and strabismus from birth. Great at sport, baseball since grace 4 aways to corporate baseball 1st base but can never play 3rd past.. I get it now. Getting a door knob correctly I’ll basically hit part of my body on the frame of the door mostly at home, lol.
Please can you do a video on Strabismus, ty

How about double vision and/or not about to see 3D movies....
@PsychExamReview
4 жыл бұрын
@@gaylecheung3087 As far as I know, many people with strabismus are not able to perceive 3D effects in movies because they are only focusing with one eye at a time, and thus their brain can't combine the two different images from each eye into a 3D image (this can also cause depth perception problems in everyday life). That said, some people may be able to experience some of the 3D effects in films, and I'm not an expert in this area so I might not be able to answer more detailed questions.
Awwww this guy is cute😍
