Over the years I've been amazed how these cars have been squeezed down some of the most wretched sidings and branch lines

Interesting how the loaded tranformer is secured too the deck with welded angled steel .Thank you for posting this interesting video, as a model railroader gives detailed examples of how large heavy loads are retained on flat cars.👍

Same as on ships -- it's not going anywhere if it's welded down.

Thanx for posting! I did leave a thumps up! That was quite something in that all the noise created when it moved!

Same as certain loads on freight ships weld the load to the deck no chance of movement absolutely top notch.

Aerial photographs I've reviewed over the years showed many large substations used to have rail spurs into them.

There is one about 2 miles from me. I've never seen them move anything down it. Just cars stored there. Its about 3/4 of a mile long.

I don't see a coupler, so not sure what that is all overgrown. I am more interested in that than the transforner!

They obviously feel that it's a sufficiently out-of-the-way location that vandalism is unlikely.

Nice catch, I’m surprised that the light pound rail could handle that weight

Keep in mind, a normal everyday loaded 4-axle freight car weighs 100-135 tons.

are those blocks of concrete stacked on the corners of the railcar? Are they ballast? That's quite a bit of weight!

They're for counterbalancing the load. Large substation transformers do not have centers of gravity that line up with the centerlines of the vehicles that carry them. The three large cores inside are just off center. Alone, this would result in the flatcar tipping to one side unacceptably, so the concrete blocks are added to counterbalance this offset. If the transformer case is small enough, however, it could be loaded off center to compensate.

Surprised you didn't walk down behind it around the curve to see the power. There should of been a builders plate on there. Could of panned over to the flatcar in the grass instead of looking at the wheel bottoms 🤔.

The final shot was taken through a chain-link fence. Not a good idea to go trespassing on the railway while there are crews working there.

The "weld on doubler plate only" notice only applies to the angled part of the deck. Welding on the main flat deck is fine.
