Long ago I was working at a Target store in Mn. as security and received a page to the front of the store. A man in a wheel chair told me a person in a truck parked in a Handicapped Spot and when the disabled man said he needed the spot, the guy just laughed at him and went inside. I walked out and found the truck with Texas plates and no placard. There was a State Trooper in the parking lot and I told him about this. The Trooper came over and ran the plates. When the A-Hole came out the Trooper arrested him for outstanding warrants and had the truck towed. It was a good day at work.

@@SpecialNeedsChamp999 You get them thru your state motor vehicle authority called DMV or MVA in some states. The application is usually online. Fill it out, take it to your doctor for completion and take it back to the motor vehicle office. They will issue you a temporary and mail the permanent one to you. Most important these placards are specific to you only. Unless you are riding in the vehicle or getting picked up no family member can use it. If they violate that rule and get cited by police or parking enforcement, the fine is brutal, $1,000 to $2,500 in many places and the placard is confiscated. If it is you have go thru that process all over again. There are videos where police confront an illegal user and they try to argue that it’s for the car and they should be entitled to it.

I have a handicap license plate. I try not to park in the handicap spots, when able. My gripe is also with the electric carts. Some places it's great, and others (like walmart, kroger) they never work, or charged. Then you got the handicap people who got into the store without one,,, taking it out into the parking lot and leaving it there. When I'm doing real bad and I need an electric cart, I drive it back to the store and plug it it. It is not just non handicap people being rude.

After seeing this and reading the comments, I like the idea of having a picture on the placard. I have been yelled, called names, and have had hateful notes left on my car. My disabilities (yes, more than one) are not visible, and people can be downright cruel. I've tried to "lighten" the situation by saying I got my placard the old fashioned way...I "earned" it. People are so quick to judge, and that judgement is almost always negative. I appreciate their voicing concerns, because they're looking out for us. I just wish people understood that not all disabilities are obvious.

I'm disabled and use a wheelchair to get out of bed or go any place because I cannot walk. I usually don't park in handicap spots because sometimes I don't have a placard and many years ago I didn't ever use one. Foolishly I have parked in handicapped spaces without my placard and have been fined. I deserved it. I am 70 years old now but I spent the last 50 years in my wheelchair. I just park out in the lot next to a post and push myself into the store because I can use my arms. I just need a wider space to get out. I do not need a spot up close.

I'm much the same with balance issues and chronic lower back pain. If the weather is nice I might get a smidge of releif on my back and be able to walk from a normal spot. My issue is I've tried that a few times and end up hurting myself whilst in the shops (move too quick in one direction or something and have trouble getting back to the car (numb leg, extreme pain etc). When I start walking in usually you wouldn't know on a good day but you'll notice after standing around at the checkouts etc on the way out.

Some years back I had a guy threaten to beat the shit out of me and slash my tires In Jefferson City, MO for parking my van in a handicap spot with a placard on the mirror at walmart. He was making a big scene trying to get other people around us to do something to me and even threatened to call the cops after I pulled the wheelchair ramp out of the back and my wife drove her power-chair out of the middle. She just glared at him, gave him the finger and then drove over his foot because he wouldn't get out of the way. One of the cart guys stepped in after this and told him to leave before "he" called the cops and said he would back us up if we wanted to press charges. People are stupid and there's no cure for stupidity.

When I was in municipal court with a defendant, there was another defendant (I was not his attorney) on a citation for parking in a handicap parking space. The judge asked him if he wanted to contest the citation or plead guilty. He told that judge that he could park any f----ing place he wanted to park at and then told the judge to GFY. The judge then told the bailiff to arrest the man for contempt of court. That type of behavior landed him in jail. Some people!

Turns out the guy that was helping me on one of my latest visits, was the general manager of the place, and I brought up the subject of not being able to do business there on some days, because I couldn’t make the trek from “the back 40”. Easy fix. Handicappers: Park behind them and when they come out and get upset tell them you'll only be a few minutes while you are doing something on the cell. Now, just sit there, then back up so they can get out and be sure they see you pull in. I've been doing that for a while when I had to drive my late mother around. I was lucky because when they got in my face I got out with my bat and walked the idiot to HIS vehicle and told him that if I shatter his windshield with me parked behind him and he calls the cops, he'll get the ticket and I might get a personal property damage ticket!! He'll have a high dollar ticket and a windshield cost and if he wins the civil suit there is NO LAW that says you have to pay it! Been there and it took a while before I could get the money with a garnishment because I got his bank account info and the clerk walked across the street and got my award and he went out of buisness! If they don't have a bank account number then suing you is a waste of time. But as one in a chair, you don't have the windshield option but staying behind him telling him "I'll only be a minute" until the police show up is priceless! Not much he can do but learn an expensive lesson of life and laws!

My son is in a wheelchair and we pulled our van into a handicap spot just as we got in there a small car pulls into the cross hatch section and we could not get out because the person in the car and who pulled in there was angry that his door wouldn't open all the way he got out and completely keyed the whole side of our van yelling at us for blocking his ability to get out of his car. My son was terrified The problem with any crime is that it is not taken seriously especially this one. In fact it is not even taken seriously by some of the law enforcement who failed to do their job properly. I'm disabled and last night I was parked in a green spot and a green spot has no time limit for a person with disabled plates. The issuing officer stood right there and would not even look at the federal guidelines stating that I do not have a time limit to be parked in there and wrote me a $65 ticket. I told him I will challenge him on the ticket it is completely illegal what he did it was a violation of the disabled rights for parking. This was a blatant misuse of his authority Violators should be immediately towed away nobody should have the right opportunity to just drive away. If it doesn't come down to something as serious as that then people will continue to park in there. I remember back in the '60s and '70s nobody wanted to be cold disabled but now today with what they say are benefits to us there are so many fake disabled people now. I guess it's just fashionable to be disabled. I for one know that both my son and I would be happy to give you what we have so that we don't have to use that spot. It shows disrespect for other people no empathy and just the course of our society is going down.

I’m one of those people who looks normal and I refuse to get handicap parking because people don’t believe I have a disabled. I have an ADA bus pass in which I have to test every four years. To prove my disability as it’s a federal program but often on buses I get told seniors have the right way before the disabled and I don’t need the spot even though it’s the rules in which the drivers typically get taken out of service when I call in. It’s frustrating

Fines??? That doesn't seem to work very well. Try drivers license suspension, or revoke their license plate for a minimum one month to start with. Second offense, make it 6 months, and ever increasing for each offense. About half the time when I go to Wally World, I have to do like the lady said and park out by the dumpsters, and then hope I don't get blocked in. Just the other day, I had to wait for over an hour to get back in my vehicle.

Fines have a number of issues. One, I suspect that police officers don't get all excited about enforcing handicapped violations when they could be investigating "real" crimes. Two, if the fines aren't large enough, police departments may not feel that handicapped parking enforcement is worth their time. Three, what are the chances that a police officer will ever be around to catch that "I'll just be a minute" violator, or if called, be able to get to the scene in time to catch the violators? Four, if the fine isn't large enough, many people may barely take notice of it, and just see it as a cost of doing business/cost of living kind of thing, i.e. pay the "bill" and forget about it 5 minutes later. It seems to me that if you really want enforcement to make a difference, the punishment has to be a LOT stiffer, whether it's a much higher fine, say, around $1,000 for wrongly parking in a handicapped spot, and perhaps another $1,000 if you are fraudulently using a handicapped placard or plate. I suppose you could suspend driver's licenses, but how often do we see people driving on suspended licenses? Revoking the plates on cars might work, perhaps, but it might not. Or the police could have the cars towed and impounded for 30 days, with all the appropriate towing and impound fees attached. That might not stop the offending driver from driving, but it would stop them from driving in that car. And I think that impounding a car for a month is something that can't be ignored. After all, if you're in the city and you get your car impounded, it's may be a major pain in the behind to get home, and you will certainly be very annoyed to have lost your car for a month.

Someone with an invisible disability shouldn’t have to explain or even disclose their medical conditions to strangers. I’m disabled, but I haven’t applied for a handicapped permit yet because I rarely leave my house. But when I get one, I’m only going to use handicap spaces when I need to. If you are handicapped, and someone (with no visible placard or disabled sticker on their vehicle) has parked in the handicapped spot, park your car right in back of the offender. Then refuse to move, (call the police and record, and/or live stream), until the police arrive. Make sure that you get the offenders face and licence plate on video.

I have been unable to walk for over 6 yrs now. I have a placard, but we never use it because we know others need it more. Since I am unable to drive I always have my family member drop me at the door to my doctor's office. There I sit in my chair (while they park in a regular spot) & wait for them to join me. When we leave we do the whole thing in reverse. It's a little bit harder on both of us, but way less painful & stressful for the poor guy/gal who has a serious handicap & can't find a space to park...or needs a space for their lift to drop so they can get in and out of their van. Be kind people...their lives are hard enough.

Failing to have a Parking Pass, or being caught using someone else's Pass, should go against their Driver's License, showing how they know it's wrong, but they do it anyway! If you get too many points against you, your license may be taken away! Wealthy people feel Entitled to park their Fancy Vehicles there, and if they get caught, they consider it a "service charge" to use that spot, rather than an offense.

I worked with a guy who asked me how much did I pay for my permit and I told him it was $5. he said he paid $25 for his. Then I found out he got it on the black market. I went somewhere with a friend I hadn't seen in a few years and used my plaque. He got mad at me and I told , your're awesome, I am legal. I'm thrilled he got mad that an un-entitled person might do that and that he didn't notice how I walk. I got the plaque for my ankle, but now other things have piled on. The state fair ground here in NC will close the handicap parking every year for a #$%^& car show and tell you to take their tram. I did that once and spent 6 weeks in bed and 2 doctor visits. The tram has zero suspension and the backrest is a steel beam. My entire spine is eaten up with arthritis. Plus wen the state redid the parking lot the took half of the handicap parking away. They say, we have the legal requirements. I asked them, why do you have to do the bare minimum when your customers need more? Parking for something like 3500 cars on ground and I think 15 are handicap.
