Denver sweeps homeless encampment; first time in months city not offering other housing options

On Tuesday, the City of Denver said it started a sweep of a homeless encampment in the La Alma Lincoln Park area due to public health risks.
The sweep is happening in the area of West Eighth Avenue and Mariposa Street to Sixth Avenue and Lipan Street. The city said the sweep should take about three days.
It's the first time in six months that the administration has posted an encampment closure without providing resolution on housing for the people there, the city said in a statement.

Minimum wage in Colorado is about $14.50 per hour. In a 40 hr week a worker will gross about $600. The average rent in Denver is about $1,900 . To those coldhearted, "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" types who criticize people with no shoes , I say, "Grow an ounce of compassion for your fellow man."

Easy. move to a place you can afford. If you are only worth $14.50 per hour, then you sure as hell don't belong in Denver. Perhaps rural Wyoming or Nebraska will suit you better. Housing is cheap and you can pretty much walk to work in any small town. Plus some of the nicest folks live in those small towns. Easy huh?

That saying came from Reagan at the same time that he was cutting housing subsidies remember Reaganomics it was supposed to trickle down from corporate America that's a big fat laugh nothing trickled down it all pooled at the top and stayed there while he cut and privatized housing haaa?

See you don't understand what you're talking about at all they don't pay $ 14.50 in those rural towns & your assuming there will be a job for a homeless person & that they will not have to stay with their personal private property because DPD or whatever police department is not continuously terrorizing threatening and stealing their property! Also that there will be affordable apartments that a homeless person will qualify to APPLY FOR! MEANING YOU MAKE ENOUGH MONEY, NOT THE SAME AS WHAT A PERSONS WORTH IS & I'M SORRY BUT WHO R U TO SAY WHAT SOMEONE IS WORTH OR THEIR CAPABILITIES OR PRODUCTIVITY YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT GENERAL HOMELESS?YOU'VE BEEN AT YOUR JOB FOR 2 YEARS OR MORE, RIGHT? TRUST AND BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY HOMELESS THAT ARE WORTH FAR MORE THAN MINIMUM WAGE THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE GOING TO GET HOUSED IN FACT THEY'RE NOT BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN OUT ON THE STREETS BRILLIANT JUST SAYING! WHAT CORPORATE AMERICA ISN'T KNOWN FOR TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR WORKERS, WOW! and that's if you have the ability to MOVE there HELLO! Allot of housed people say move and it's the same thing there because there is a severe affordable housing crisis in this country that was created by past administration's bad policies you cannot rapid rehouse people when you don't have long-term affordable housing they can get in! U need to watch criminalizing homelessness it is a stat trac history lesson! I have lived in Denver 60 years how long have you lived here?

I would venture a guess that Denver has abandoned government- owned facilities which could be transformed to house homeless residents. Why does the city exacerbate the problem for the homeless population by forcing them to search for new shelter? That's not a "plan", that's cruelty.

Federal minimum wage is $7.25. Twenty or so states don't have a minimum wage. They follow the Feds wage rate. So, to say a person is "worth" any given amount of payment, I believe, is misleading and demeans the value of human labor. I have heard it said that a large percentage of Americans are 2-3 paychecks away from the street. Affordable housing is a national (and. perhaps international) problem.

At least during The Great Depression they didn’t “sweep” Hoovervilles. Poor unhoused people banned together to build their own shelters and work together to keep each other safe if the government wouldn’t. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, things are worse. Disruptive and groups divided. Thanks for clearing away people’s homes since you won’t ensure they have other shelters. Truly a great solution.
