    I have the Denon AVR-X8500H, and love it. Note, though, that the special preamp mode you mentioned, which disconnects the power supply from the amplifier section is an all or nothing proposition. It disconnects the power supply from all channels when enabled. So you can't take advantage of that feature if you're using any of the onboard amplifiers to power certain channels. (I have an Emotiva XPA-5 powering my fronts and rears, and use the Denon to power the left and right surrounds plus 6 height speakers.). Also, Denon just announced that DTS:X Pro will be available as a firmware upgrade for the 8500 later this year.

    The preamp feature is nice, but why lay the internal amps of the X8500 down? Assigning the amps to the side- & back-surrounds in biamping, crossed at 80Hz, lefting power by 50-60 watts per amp is a nice feature of the X8500. I plan in the end to use 2 small floorstanding speakers for the left, an additional 2 for the right and one floorstanding speaker for every side of the back-surrounds. The immersive 6 channels will be amped by an external amplifier. My main channels LCR are driven by active speakers.

    I fully agree to use the internal amps of the X8500 for the surround and immersive channels. The big advantage of the X8500 is the amp assign capabillity, so my surround channels are fired up in biamping mode. My main channels LCR are driven by active speakers. In the future my immersive channels get driven by an external amp, so I can switch it on when I need immersive Sound. Not to use the X8500 amps would be a pitty.

    Anthem really looks exciting to me, but it does not decide DSD which I have. Also have to question in a blind test setup correctly will most people be able to tell which is which or if one is better than the other. I would think room and speakers are more impacting on sound quality. I am looking to upgrade my Denon X7200WA later this years and debating Denon X8500HA vs. Marantz SR8015 vs Anthem MRX1140. I run 7.2.2 with dual subs in a room that is 19x14x8 and I use Klipsh speaker with PSA subs. Seems liek I may be splitting hairs, I suspect the 60W surround channels in the Anthem will be more than enough for me. I also do enjoy lossless music quality.

    Given AVRs don’t really have the power any system needs, getting the one with the most grunt possible make sense. Aka- the bigger units on your list. Power supplies improve in readings drive and often the processing improves too. Anthem also have the best power amps to match, in the MCA 325. The 1140 will drive the power amp effortlessly with out our Pre out output weakness, and 400w 4ohm power up front is pretty much ideal for most systems While the big 3ch does the heavy lifting of the LCR the AVRs power supply only needs to support the effects. Our best combine this year has been 1140 and MCA325 Also to note - the 1140 has 2 dedicated sub outs and the new ARC with phase / time alignment process works great. Making a 7.2.4 system calibrate very well, with out any major technical knowledge or equipment.

    I am curious if you are seeing any prominent improvement by utilizing the Emotiva for stereo playback over the X3600H internal amp. I am asking because I saw technical review (audiosciencereview) of Emotiva A-500 amp and the X3600H's internal amp outperforms that SINAD wise by a good margin. Stemming from this, I would think the A300 would be a downgrade from using the X3600H internal amp. Of course, you could just be using it for the extra power.

    shemaya fernando hi likely the Marantz 8 series AVR strongest for straight up sound. Between the sister models Denon and marantz Marantz is designed as the more HiFi of the two. And most experiences and reviews back this up. Arcam AVR20 is stunning - but less features, this needs to be weighted up. The anthem still has Center spread but it’s maybe true to lose this with future firmware updates. If you have an AVR with Auro3D / up mixer then music listening in immersive format is covered even if Dolby surround lets us down with out Center spread. Anthem does not have Auro3D - expect new models from anthem any electronics show now - Eg- Cedia in Sep 20 / ISE early 2021

    Hi Darren Yes the next step is separates for sure. You got some solid components. In my cinema and 2ch experience it’s the pre amp that has often had the greatest impact (oddly enough) Followed by source then power/speakers. Cinema Processors have both the DACs (considered source in the stereo world) and Pre amp all in one, AND room correction processing - it’s a very considerable component to in the audio path indeed. We all have high expectations from the AVM60 (I’m yet to receive any stock here in AU) It should by all accounts step up the sound somewhat a d appreciative from even a higher end AVR. Pushing one step further, to ensure completely transformation is going an Acurus Muse, (or maybe the AVM90 of it can complete, but the Mise will be hard to beat) The Muse is an audiophile design product, which is night and day from the lower cost Marantz/ prior AVM Anthem models. Only down side is the cost and maybe some features (see our review on the Muse for more) Good thing, is the unit is modular, hdmi boards etc can be changed, along with powerful software updates Ensures a much longer lived product, where you won’t throw away stunning sound equipment because of old tech. (In any great hurry) Hole this helps,

  • @RogueHomeCinema

    @RogueHomeCinema

    3 жыл бұрын

    A big AVR only just gives these speaker justice. Good thing with a big AVR is they also have better pre outs. As you need lots of channels, and new HDMI tech and as much good power as possible, big AVR to start is good. The 3700 is not big... And seems to run at higher distortion than the 4700/6700 So to me this shows that the 47/67 is a better sonic build. Later you’ll want a big 200-300watt power amp. A 3ch for front end LCR. This frees up power in the AVR to serve the effects, so it helps not just the front end. The 47/67 should have much better Pre outs than the smaller models. We compared a marantz 6 Vs 7 series AVR pre outs and the difference was big. The pre / professor is a big deal. A big power amp driven by an average pre will bring the sound down to the sonic enjoyment level only of the pre. I’d go at least 4700 / Anthem 1120 or Marantz 7 series and soon as possible 3ch for front end.

    Akshay Poteker arcam has the sound Eg- AVR20 vs MRX 7/1120. This is expected given price point and channel count. Anthem are well proven for reliability in my region. Arcam has had bumps getting started in new series , but firmware / software seems to now have them In a good place. I ran the AVR20 with Dirac last week and came up real good. (I just got the AVR20 back for more review time) Just one thing with arcam- the protection circuit can be a bit too sensitive. I’ve ran all 4ohm (nominal) speakers and found the Arcam protection kicked in too soon and was not compatible. Of course speakers can dip lower than 4ohm at different frequency, which causes the issue here. If running all 4ohm , give the Arcam a try- but only if you can return it for full credit of the loads don’t work out. You should be good with a week or two grace - and don’t damage anything.

My small living room is only 13 x 11.5 ft (4 x 3.5 m) with neighbours all around me, which means probably a third of the volume! And I've been told the arcam avr20 would be more than sufficient to satisfy my 2-channel in such a small environment. Plus the arcam pa410 will be able to round off my 5.2.4 setup

    Good call Since this post I’ve heard the NAD and the sound is possibly the most “HiFi of the AVRs Has the depth and fullness of sound we were hoping from the Arcam The smaller NAD is pretty basic feature wise and really does not work for many cinemas with just 3 hdmi in. Really leaves just the one Mindel - 778 With enough flexibility for most projects. As an all in one - the NAD 778 is fantastic especially with Dirac. And very Hifi for those that run stereo, will likely be more impressed with NAD. Those keen to buy in at different budgets with upgrade flexibility for adding power / Reassigning channels, Anthem at this stage seem to offer greater solutions.

    @@danilog79 I see Often the most power required at the furthest and most used / power hunger speakers = front LCR So Anthem place most power to these channels and less for the effects which are often closer and smaller / less power hungry. It’s a fair compromise Most separates will be high power front and lower power effects (Seperate power amps offering much more with around 400w LCR and 100-200 effects) Anthems 140watt Main amps are very solid and high quality. Most mid level AVRs have lessor quality until you go to the top tire. Marantz 7 series and above are great. A real cut above the 6 series. What’s most exciting is the new Anthem model will allow repurposing of the internal amps. This means you can run MRX540 > 2x surrounds > 2x Atmos External 3ch 400w power amp. > LCR This combo will deliver massive results for the least costs. Again the power where it counts up the front, in this case - serous power. While still using the on board amps (less the Center channel) for the effects. Of course this is just a 5.x.2 system Which I’d not be concerned about if i get 400w mains! Quality over quantity As you go up the range - same apples - just more and more channels. Hope this helps, and also offers more updates based on new stuff happening

    @@RogueHomeCinema that's interesting that you say that I had just the opposite results I want from a $6,000 Class A amplifier down to four Marantz monoblocks you think the difference would be huge it wasn't it was hardly any difference and the monoblocks never got hot running my BMW 803S blasting them at ninety-plus DB's I will never buy an expensive amplifier again to me they're just not worth it's diminishing returns and as you said it all depends on room setup cables material that you're listening to and I can go on and on🤔✌

    @@RogueHomeCinema I need a receiver just to run as a preamp and transmit earc, I need it mostly for music, which avr would you recommend? I already tried the Maranatz N1200 and N1711, the 1200 was far better than the 1711. I want something better, better dacs and quality.

    Bummer to hear that. Unfortunately every product has failed for someone. The support when things do is key indeed. We are lucky in AU to have Anthem distribute via a custom AV company that understand service.

    As ex projectionist (retired) which are the last link of movie exhibition. UCI cinemas and Warner Bros. I know what to look for, and listen for and feel for. Opening of the movie I use a complex system I call Dolby atmosPlusIIIx so sounds can move underneath the seating when the fighter plane zooms in at the bomber plane and whooshes underneath the seating while the side surround arrays still sounding along with decoded sound for the overhead surrounds where I use up to x9 overhead surrounds with a matrix decoder SA10 for Height 1, 2 and 3 cos the overhead surrounds are basic stereo pairs. So anything mixed or overlays of stereo tracks mono tracks or centre phantom. Sounds way better here. All JBL 4673A five screen matrix 1.5kw per screen channel. JBL CD 2446 JBL 2380A horn my home cinema goes a few more extra light-years further, well it's basically easy if it's all done with separates x6 sidewall surround arrays JBL 8330 mkII with x4 JBL control 1 for matrix below surround with JBL control SB-1 x3 x4 back wall surrounds JBL 8330 mkII The Denon AVC-X8500H is rubbish! It is so slow at video switching for a video signal to get locked on and with audio locked on. It has flaws with video composite if visual search with VHS or LASERDISC often the video goes blank/black and won't lock back on and only way is to turn the video mode selector one way and back to the mode it was running with, SIGH. dolby dsu, is Rubbish! It is flawed and dolby labs being so Lazy haven't fixed it with firmware and even if fixed it is still Rubbish compared to analog Dolby Stereo MP 4.2.4 matrix thank goodness my system is complex and can run DOLBY MP 4.2.4. The Liemax is and will never ever be used here I will never buy a 4k dtsx movie Never. So the Denon AVC-X8500H worst buy I ever made. and trinnov 32 will never ever be on my list, never. 4k home cinema is a scam. 23:13 Near Field mixes are not necessary for the home. Mix it once and release it. LASERDISC theatrical mixes make 4k sound like baby learning to walk. I've just about had enough of 4k near field remixes upmixes of these dreadful atmos cash cows for older movies simply is disappointing. x9 overhead surrounds with DOG channels JBL 8330A and extras on the floor x6 JBL control 1, cos I know what is going with constant listening discretely to any channel. DOG Channel® is my own special modification. No need for auro3d here with vog. Oh I see how that works and I only have one of the same movie that dreadful Blade Runner 2049 or 11 mins to 9 O'clock. One is atmos the other is german auro3d english PCM auro3d and that dreadful red tails. BR2049 only played once fully. JBL 4645C left JBL 4645 right SW or LFE.1 depending on movie format playing JBL 4682 TCB front middle - JBL 4682 TCB back of the room 15.12.6 I could expand it to 17.12.6 but I can't be asked to use the other AVR (since I lost my uncle, my Dad and my Cat Sooty last year) I just don't give a hoot about home theatre/cinema anymore. I even switched the AVR overhead surrounds off and not brought a blu/4k atmos old and I never really buy new movies anymore, not brought a 4k in over 5 months now. I brought few LASERDISCS Dolby AC-3 and Dolby Stereo. Bass shakers for all the Irwin rocker seats Commercial cinema Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System 3417 in this THX cinema. Sound is 50% picture 50%. Well not true cos the budget on movies the budget is not split equally so 50% for the picture side that is acting, art direction, costume, shall I go on? Then when it comes to sound they have far less cos it was all used up for the what is going to be seen on the screen. Denon AVC-X8500H with DOLBY STEREO CP200 and how many homes have a CP200? x2 Sony SDDS DFP-D3000 DOLBY CP500 and lot more besides that. 38.000kw THX.
