By the way, the difference between MM and MC, is the cartridge, not just the button on the amp. The MC position adds preamplification for the lower output moving coil cartridge.

You can push that button all day and its still a moving coil cartridge. Deon turntables are awesome. I have the DP-37f and its fantastic.

That button just changes the amplification level. MC cartridges output lower voltage levels than MM cartridges therefore require a higher amplification. This is not comparing a moving coil cartridge to a moving magnet cartridge. Your merely changing the amplification of your moving coil from a low to high. Your treating it like a loudness switch.

I have the Denon DP-400. I currently use the internal phono preamp but would like to upgrade later to an external phono stage or an MC amplifier.

Other than gain requirement of the phono stage, the impedance loading is very important on MC since the coil is less inductive than in MM. MC require a lower impedance load to prevent response anomalies and improve signal transfer efficiency. Best starting point would be to place load resistors that are ten times the coil impedance. Most High Output MC recommend a load that is same as MM - 47K ohms. This will like be too high causing a rising treble range. A better load would be likely 1000 -5000ohms. - Sandy The Aging Boston Audiophile. More info: The Cartridge here is a high output MC that came with the Denon Turntable Similar to a DL-160. That should work into the Integrated amp MM gain structure.
