    I bought Denoiser II from RedGiant couple years ago. I didn't need it back then, but I'm one of those who buy stuff for the purpose of buying stuff. I tested it out and thought it was kinda cool. Reducing noise aint a bad thing. Some time ago we used Panasonic GH4 attached to MÖVI M5 for the first time. In the spirit of run'n'gun no testing before the first shoot, yeah I know this is the moment where dumb da da di dumb score starts to play. We usually shoot with Nikon D4 and D800 and for some weird reason I really really like the way videos come out from Nikon's. So GH4 as our main camera... settings... run... and gun... It was run'n'gun from lighting to way we shot the video. Nikon's footage looked great as usual. We once shot a production without additional lights indoors and a rep from a huge globally known film production company asked what kind of lights we used. And as I responded "none" she was stumped. Anyways the first time when I looked at GH4 footage from the shoot I became terrified. Last time I saw the same amount of noise was back in the 8MM/VHS days, and I was 15 years old kid back then shooting horrible videos. Probably not that much noise, but you get the idea. I dropped RG Denoiser II in and the outcome was = unusable footage.... Then I remembered Neat Video from this particular Film Riot episode. Ryan didnt say that Neat Video was super great or way better than RG's Denoiser, so I didnt believe it would change anything, but atleast I could try.... To my total surprise Neat Video was able to remove the noise, not only reduce but remove it almost completely. RG Denoiser only removed the tiniest particles but it definately did not deliver anything usable. The problem with "hardcore" noise with RG Denoiser is that it removes the noise well, when your looking a single frame, but once you start to play the video the video may and most often starts to have new problems. Solid colors look crap etc. Neat Video delivered solid results. So if your in a situation where you have footage beyond RG Denoisers repair. Try Neat Video instead. RG Denoiser II makes videos look neat, Neat Video can possibly save you from a noisy disaster.

    Just want to note that you can get far better results from Neat by profiling your camera at different ISO settings and working more with the advanced settings. For instance, the compression macro blocking could have been removed. I've found that if you take the time learn Neat and to profile your camera, it's quite a bit better than DeNoiser II.

  • @BrianBerneker
    @BrianBerneker9 жыл бұрын

    Things totally overlooked in NEAT video: 1. Temporal Filter - scans ahead and back up to 5 frames for much cleaner result 2. Very low frequency checkbox - ideal for dark areas and the large blobby stuff that is prominent IN THIS EXAMPLE!! 3. Manual selection of noise profile - full auto profiling is never as good as manually creating a profile using multiple samples from different parts of the frame. I'd like to see this comparison done again taking those settings into account!

    Brian Berneker Agreed... Depending on the noise profile you can turn down the high noise and jack up the low. Then Stagger the mid your can get some really impressive results. Neat video really needs to be use for a while to understand it and yield best results.

    CleoTv Maybe there is some setting to adjust in VLC before converting so you could preserve the aspect ratio. Not sure, I will have to check. I did not have that problem. The aspect ratio of my videos did not change.

    CleoTv Ok, I just looked. When you select Convert/Save, you select Add and choose the video you want to convert. Then you click Convert/Save. In the next window, you should have a "wrench/screwdriver" icon (to change video settings). You click that icon and in the next window you go to Video Codec > Resolution. Here you can enter the frame size you want.

    Do you have the same issue with how long it takes to render and export videos after using this effect? I'm using a Mac Pro + an SSD with 350+ mbps read/write and OMG it takes such a long time ( I mean hours)...BUT, it does improve footage.

  • @enriquevilla2065

    @enriquevilla2065

    Update: For anyone using this program. HOPEFULLY, you don't need to use it if you already have amazing footage. But for those looking to improve video clips. If your video clips are just a few seconds long, then your render and export time will should only increase by a few seconds to a few minutes. HOWEVER, if you are working with video clips that are 5 minutes or longer, expect a lengthy process. TIP: edit your project all the way through (color grading, stabilization, cuts, transitions, music, the works), >export project, then import that video back to your editing software and add the neat denoiser to that clip. Go grab coffee, dinner, go on a date, watch a movie, then come back and perhaps it'll be done by then. Expect the same length of time exporting. Example: 5 minute video takes 2-3 hours to render and same for export. Crazy! GOLD TIP: AVOID NOISY CLIPS AT ALL COSTS!!!

    If anyone sees this, please help me: I got Denoiser II a little while ago, and it's been a big help until it came to exporting from Premiere Pro. In this case, about 85% of the clips are linked After Effects comps with Denoiser II applied inside of AE. When I try to export the whole thing (3 minutes long), at some point in the process (it happens either right at the beginning or 75% of the way through), it will stop exporting and say "Error compiling movie: unknown error". I will be very upset if this error is unknown to the rest of the internet. I don't want to have to do what I did last time and export the video in 3 separate parts and then recompile it. I've tried exporting countless times and I am very tired. But I know this is because of Denoiser II.

    Nice! I just tried out Neat Video and a fairly cheap (30$ I think) Denoiser for Final Cut Pro X. With Neat Video, you can additionally tweak the settings by selecting not just one but several areas in your image, to have noise profiles over varying degrees of luminance, that will really improve your image even more. You can also set the number of frames it interpolates from in time, which will get rid of some of the flickering and wavy stuff. But I agree that Neat Video tends to give a soft and partially blocky look to the image.

Neat Video has a a good algorythm that spans across multiple frames. Furthermore, I found Neat Video to be much faster when you've got multiple GPUs, as it is very efficient at spreading it's load across all configured ressources.

    imho only reasonable(or rather complementary) alternative to neat video is Revision FX DE:Noise(it has 2 algoritms). Neat is best(details/speed) at 2-3 frames compare(with sample denoising turned off cause it makes footage blurry), DE:Noise'rs are best for light noise situations when Neat is overdenoising (if you loosen default settings). Mixing both can save some heavy noise shots, as DE:Noise'rs hande also this floating that Neat leaves in this video.

    I've run into some crazy horrible glitches when using Red Giant Denoiser II. Sometimes it would distort an image, flipping and inverting it, and when I tried to use it on a picture lock as a final step it would replace the last frame of every clip with a black frame, which is unacceptable. There's a surprising amount of noise in RED footage at or above 1K ISO, so it's not just a DSLR issue. Also, it would be best to not rely on any sharpening done by the plugin as well as do some sort of luminance key to place unfiltered highlights and upper-mids back into the image, since these are the values representing detail and your apparent sharpness. The objectionable noise will be in the under-exposed blacks and lower register of the image. Naively filtering all areas of the image as if this were a uniform issue throws good pixels after bad.

    Dear Film Riot... I need your help. I purchased Neat Video 5 and they within hours cancelled and refunded my order....? This happened to me a couple years ago with Version 4. I dont understand if its a tech issue or they have something personal against me... But All I want to do is use the Full Version V5 for FCPX editing and I feel like Im being in some way discriminated against. Im clueless and at loss for words... also they never respond to me as to why I am being refunded... Basically refusing to take my money without explaination. Please Help.

    Hi, when I export the video with Denoiser 2, it simply doesn't work. When I apply it on adobe premiere or after effects, I can preview it, no problem. But when I export the video it doesn't work. Can you teach me how to export the video so that the denoiser will have an effect on it? Thank you.

    under how much noise level is it unworthy to reduce noise ? Because I see examples for 15 noise level and it really worth it, but on my side, I have 1.8, it takes a lot of time and I'm wondering if it worth it
