Dennis Rodman (9pts/19rebs/11offensive/5asts) vs. Sonics (1996 Finals)

Спорт

Dennis steps up when the team needs him the most and plays a fabulous game 6 which leads to a championship. Rodman crashes the boards with intensity (he repeated the finals record of 11 offensive rebounds) and does all the little things - picks up a few assists, steals some balls, gets some calls against Kemp. There's a reason why Bulls out-rebounded the Sonics by 16 in this game, which in fact was the main reason for the W, and of course they wouldn't have done it without Dennis. June 16, 1996.

A 6-7 guy, who weighed maybe 215, tied the NBA finals record for offensive rebounds. Think about that for a minute. He routinely outplayed guys like Kemp, Shaq and Malone, who towered over him. The guy wasn't just a hard worker, he was a master of psychology. He got in guys' heads, made them take stupid fouls, and by the fourth quarter they were just f---ed. If I'm making my dream team, Rodman's on it, flaky behavior and all, because he gets my other guys a dozen extra possessions a game easy.

I watched all the games back then. Dennis deserved absolutely the MVP. (And I am a crazy Jordan fan). 1-st, because he was an equal factor as MJ. He just dominated the whole finals with his presence. And 2-nd, because these are the only Finals, in which Jordan wasn's so dominant and effective. He was a bit tired from the 72:10 season. His stats were not very good (27 Pts with 42% FG) compared to his Finals averages of 33.6 and 48%. The same could be said of the Finals MVP in 2005, which should be given to Manu Ginobili.

Go to 3:30 for a perfect example of how in-tune Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman were. Rodman has the ball, and looks to pass to Pip. Pip’s like “Nah, we got Mike goin’ back door” and points down to MJ. Rodman’s like “word?” and Pip’s like “word,” and Dennis tosses a perfect touch pass down to MJ who finishes with the easy lay-up. Roderick Aspiras it’s open lanes because of the spacing. Teams back then dumbass idea of offense was to force yourself as close to the paint as possible, which makes it easier for defenses to guard you. Today all 5 positions can shoot the three which opens up the floor.

Stephen steve MJ told a story on The Last Dance about the team not being able to catch up with Dennis during a running drill after he came back from his Vegas "vacation". They all thought he would be out of shape but it in reality, it took them 4 laps to pass him. I heard Bill Wennington say that Dennis looked back and slowed down and the guys eventually caught up. They'd still be running after him today if he hadn't done that.

Of course the others were doing great stuff like usually but Rodman was the key factor of these finals. And in this specific game, he just switched the momentum in the 3rd! Awesome this guy knows how to do everything and can defend on any position!

there was a lot of arguments at this time too and a lot of people already said that Rodman was the really MVP of the series !!! George Karl said it, french commentator said it too in live, french sport newspaper "l'équipe" wrote it and a lot of basket's fans agreed.... But it was mj's time and for David Stern, nobody else should be Mvp. With Jordan and Nba's business rules around the world, it was forgotten : we have a recent example with "the last dance" without a very short time about 96'season and finals just about Jordan's come back to win.

What was great about Rodman, outside of his skills, personality, behavior, etc, was his spirit of the game. He was like a kid who dreamed to play at the biggest stage and delivered. Rodman also never went far with his acts vs opposing players(Kemp, Schrempf). He was smart not to be taken out of the game with a fight. Even though many(media) considered him different from other role models or labeled him strange, he was still fun to watch.

I loved the matchup between Rodman and Kemp in this series. Neither MJ nor Pip had a great series but Rodman and Kemp were both in their prime and were both on fire. This video is about Rodman's highlights but Kemp had a lot too. Kemp had the most ferocious dunks but Rodman doesn't quit and made the difference for Chicago.
