Dennis Lehane, Mystic River author, in conversation with Eddie Muller

Dennis Lehane has had the kind of career most authors would kill for. Already riding high with a string of New York Times bestsellers, Lehane found Hollywood producers hungry for his dark plots, unforgettable characters and cinematic thrills. From the multi-Oscar-winning Mystic River (for which he was nominated for adapted screenplay) to Gone, Baby, Gone to Shutter Island and The Drop, Lehane is increasingly in demand in the film industry, and has written for acclaimed series like The Wire and Boardwalk Empire. He discusses his book-to-film career, as well as his most recent novel, World Gone By.

Lehane was spot on with his observations on overly commercially focused writers. The cell phone bit is also correct.

I'm ashamed I haven't read too many of his later books but Mystic River is still my favorite!

A writer saying, repeatedly, "I was like", "it went". Cant believe it.

I haven't read his books but did see the film Mystic River, which is pretty grim and gruesome stuff, hard to relate to for those of us from pleasant suburbs of green lawns and country clubs. I suppose you write what you know, Too horrible for me to stomach I'm afraid.
